Uh, I have a question. I just beat Abyss last night (amazing game, btw), and now of course, im searching for another tales game. (can't play Symphonia or Vesperia because I don't have the consoles they're on.) So I was looking at this one. Is this a good game? From what I've seen, it has many mixed reviews, with some people saying its a great game to others saying its a horrible game. So..... yeah...do any of you reccomend this game, or does it suck? :/
@xWindtearx it is not for everyone, but I personally like it. People often don't like the fact that it has a 2D battle plane, no 2 player or Co-Op, generic dungeons, etc., but in my opinion, it has amazing music, character development, and storyline.

Allow me to try and give a summary of some of the story at the beginning to start you off. It starts off with you and your "sister", Shirley on a ship, which you then lose control of it when the Legacy...
@xWindtearx the Legacy is a giant ship from an ancient civilization, nobody really knows anything about it even the basics like how it moves, etc., but there was somebody called the Merines, or Shining One who is able to control the ship with their will. Shirley is thought to be a descendant of the Merines and is then captured because of it. I find it kinda funny how the majority of the game is you on a HUGEEEEEE ship, anyways, I hope this helps a little.

@xWindtearx hmmmm, well there is subtlties of it, I actually only cleared the main storyline and didn't get to clear the bonus storylines or whatever. After you beat the game, you go through some stuff for each character(amongst other things), for example, Norma is a treasure hunter, and in her post-game storyline, she pursues what she came looking for on the Legacy. I always thought that Chloe liked Senel since she gets jealous of Norma's flirting

@Gilmoreboy2007 the part where shinra is trying to get the huge materia from the underwater reactor a junon. you are about to get to the submarine where they loaded it onto, but reno sends a boss at you. i hav been stuck on that boss for MONTHS!!! (not exaggerating) it keeps on killing me!!!! *cries TT_TT its called 'carry armor' i believe.

AAAH! Such good good good memories... Cept that one part I'm currently stuck on ;_; So I haven't played it in years now lol. But baritenorsonheim is right about everything! Something about the story line just pulled you in with your heartstrings, am I right?
I really need to give this game another chance. I love all the Tales games, but I got this one AFTER beating ToV. I started with ToS -> TotA -> ToV -> ToS2 -> ToL
And sadly going back to ToL is kind of hard. The battle system is so linear because it's older, and then the voices sound like they are standing in an empty Warehouse...
this game sucked i disliked it i prefer tales of symphonia over this game any day hell i would prefer tales of hearts over this but even so senel is one of the most badass characters in tales of games just this game was bland and boring did not keep me at the edge of my seat like symphonia and Abyss

It was really a struggle for me to finish this game. Only did it for my love of the Tales series. I remember it having a decent plot, but the majority of the characters were unlikeable and the dungeon design was HORRENDOUS. Linear uninspired dungeons does not equal fun...
Of all the Tales games I have played (Symphonia, Legendia, Abyss, and Vesperia) I honestly found this one to be the least enjoyable. I've played the other 3 over several times, but couldn't even bring myself to even finish this one. I'm blaming that on lack of any character connection though. I didn't particularly like any of the characters in this game.
Same here. But then I finished it. There are about two "endings" before you get to the meat of the game; the character quests. After you beat the army, after the Nerifes, you get to play what REALLY made this game worthwhile. And trust me, you will love it if you get to that point. Especially Grune, she's the best character in the game.
@Usayasha I personally didn't like Grune D: I thought that she didn't have to her character development, and I don't remember her joining your party for any particular reason
Maybe You Gonna Hate Me for This, But I Have The Japanese Version, And The Opening Is From Do As infinity, It Was So GREAT, it Fits the Video Perfectly, And i Think It Was SOOOO BETTER than This Version (to be honest i HATE it)
Visually, this is by far the best opening. I love the scene where Jay and Moses are on the tree...:D and the one where Will and Norma are exploding stufff :D

@TalesofMe101 Actually, "Tales of" series is quite popular in Japan. For some reason, anything the does well in Japan, is largely unheard of overseas and the opposite holds true as well.
I like this game!... but this game disappoints me for not having multi-player.... I think having the co-op mode has been the trademark of the 'tales' series.... but this game didn't have it.... Even though I like this game, it is on my least to play on the tales series... I wish they could change it... =(
And you all may not know, but both Atlus and XSeed offered to localize Tales of Rebirth and freaking Tales of Destiny Remake, the best of the bunch. Namco said no. So, I'll never be thankful to them.
They may redeem themselves a little if they really localize Tales of Vesperia PS3 (because everybody knows that they only localized ToV 360 because Microsoft paid them to do so; not that I think it's a bad thing, but tells a lot about Namco x West).
@XitsunaiX Should I be thankful that they did a half-assed job localizing the worst Tales for PS2 while not localizing Rebirth, Hearts, Symphonia PS2, Destiny 2 or Destiny Remake? Sure, why not. Personally, ToL isn't one of my favorite Tales games, the first Symphonia is still my favorite, abyss is second and vesperia is probably my third. I like the story and the characters, but I don't know. There is something missing.
Okay< not looking for an arguement, but Legendia just didn't do it for me. The soundtrack was well done i'll admit, but the side-scrolling was a turn off after the grid system of Symphonia. The story was interesting, but you dont even get anyone's best spells or shirley for that matter until after the main scenario. Everyone has their preferences, and mine align themselves with Symphonia, Vesperia, and Abyss.
I think it's because legendia was a little different...world map is a ship,the main character is a fighter,not a swordman....even Cloe is a lot diffenrent..knight,with short hair.m

I must admit that Abyss has a wonderful 3-d battle system. I don't know maybe to me the story was better in Legendia and I own a lot of Tales so the fight system is fantastic to me weightier or not its 3-d or 2-d. also in Abyss one of the thing that turned me off was the constant returning to previous towns after u see the world there arn't that many other places left to see. I don't own a GC so symphonia missed me. but ty for the reply
Ok I see the mistake in my comment but in all fairness the structure of the comment was intended for the Character quests after the main Scenario. I personally found those mission very difficult especially the final Boss. If you reread the comment you will see I specify beating the boss at lv 80 and say it was not easy. I also have to ask which Tales game has mania mode ty.

It was interesting since it was an attempt on the game without 4 player multiplayer... which was a bad idea. But characters/music/story wise, it was fantastic. Just, not as much fun when stuck as a solo-only game. And man I wish the second half had been voiceacted--Tales always has fantastically fitting voiceactors.
Legendia isn't for everyone, since it's not multiplayer, and the battles are only 2-d. But I really thought the characters, plot, sheer quantity of moves, and especially the music were all fantastic.
I think this game had the very best game play music out of the series (thats ive so far played which is phantasia, eternia, symphonia (1 &2) legendia and abyss) so dont complain tht vesperia is better caus i wouldnt know, but the only bad side of this game i think was the fighting it was a bit hard to get used to, but like most tales game the story ruled..
@blazingwolfwings I love Symphonia, but I don't agree it has the best characters in the series at all. I think that title is reserved for Destiny or Vesperia.
@HotPocketEXE Most of Symphonia's characters lacked backstory. In the case of ToL, every main character has an in-depth story. Once you find out about a character's past, that's it for them. The development wasn't great, either. Zelos and Lloyd had good development, but most of the characters remain static all the way throughout the game. Kratos I'd say is in between, but that's because of his personality and his commitment to protecting Lloyd.
Agreed. Symphonia was great, but the characterization in this game was unbelievable. Especially when I think of the Character quests and the final ending. So emotionally packed. What I didn't like about the game was the random battles, the 2d battle plane, and the generic dungeons. For those reasons i preferred the gameplay of Symphony, but I think Legendia would make a fantastic anime. Best characters and story by far

Same here. But then I finished it. There are about two "endings" before you get to the meat of the game; the character quests. After you beat the army, after the Nerifes, you get to play what REALLY made this game worthwhile. And trust me, you will love it if you get to that point. Especially Grune, she's the best character in the game.

At the end of this video, im realizing the good times and epic music again. Im mad because i have to get it again this christmas, becuase someone stole mine, and on top of that it was one of the first to come, i think i got it on the week, or even the day it came out. I feel sorry for those who would want a rpg like these, and never even heard of Tale Series, if Tales series were more openly advertise like sports games, i bet sellings of Tales of would double. I make it better, because for each person that like anime or stuff like that, i tell them about "Tales Of", and the funny thing is all of my close friends that i showed them to, THEY ALL LIKED THEM.

I like this game!... but this game disappoints me for not having multi-player.... I think having the co-op mode has been the trademark of the 'tales' series.... but this game didn't have it.... Even though I like this game, it is on my least to play on the tales series... I wish they could change it... =(

And you all may not know, but both Atlus and XSeed offered to localize Tales of Rebirth and freaking Tales of Destiny Remake, the best of the bunch. Namco said no. So, I'll never be thankful to them.
They may redeem themselves a little if they really localize Tales of Vesperia PS3 (because everybody knows that they only localized ToV 360 because Microsoft paid them to do so; not that I think it's a bad thing, but tells a lot about Namco x West).

Personally, ToL isn't one of my favorite Tales games, the first Symphonia is still my favorite, abyss is second and vesperia is probably my third. I like the story and the characters, but I don't know. There is something missing.

Okay< not looking for an arguement, but Legendia just didn't do it for me. The soundtrack was well done i'll admit, but the side-scrolling was a turn off after the grid system of Symphonia. The story was interesting, but you dont even get anyone's best spells or shirley for that matter until after the main scenario. Everyone has their preferences, and mine align themselves with Symphonia, Vesperia, and Abyss.

The only thing that stood out for me in this game was
1) main character punches enemies.. persoannly i think punching a dragon in the throat is badass
2) the skits actaully had voices... which was kinda only done in Japan at the time.
3) the spellcaster (Wil) can actually do decent melee.
other than that I agree. They coulda done alot better with Legendia

I think it's because legendia was a little different...world map is a ship,the main character is a fighter,not a swordman....even Cloe is a lot diffenrent..knight,with short hair.m
Most of the main girls that make a ''couple'' with the main guy are mages(and have long hair too)

I must admit that Abyss has a wonderful 3-d battle system. I don't know maybe to me the story was better in Legendia and I own a lot of Tales so the fight system is fantastic to me weightier or not its 3-d or 2-d. also in Abyss one of the thing that turned me off was the constant returning to previous towns after u see the world there arn't that many other places left to see. I don't own a GC so symphonia missed me. but ty for the reply

Ok I see the mistake in my comment but in all fairness the structure of the comment was intended for the Character quests after the main Scenario. I personally found those mission very difficult especially the final Boss. If you reread the comment you will see I specify beating the boss at lv 80 and say it was not easy. I also have to ask which Tales game has mania mode ty.

It was interesting since it was an attempt on the game without 4 player multiplayer... which was a bad idea. But characters/music/story wise, it was fantastic. Just, not as much fun when stuck as a solo-only game. And man I wish the second half had been voiceacted--Tales always has fantastically fitting voiceactors.

Well done with the video.
Legendia isn't for everyone, since it's not multiplayer, and the battles are only 2-d. But I really thought the characters, plot, sheer quantity of moves, and especially the music were all fantastic.

I think this game had the very best game play music out of the series (thats ive so far played which is phantasia, eternia, symphonia (1 &2) legendia and abyss) so dont complain tht vesperia is better caus i wouldnt know, but the only bad side of this game i think was the fighting it was a bit hard to get used to, but like most tales game the story ruled..

@HotPocketEXE Most of Symphonia's characters lacked backstory. In the case of ToL, every main character has an in-depth story. Once you find out about a character's past, that's it for them. The development wasn't great, either. Zelos and Lloyd had good development, but most of the characters remain static all the way throughout the game. Kratos I'd say is in between, but that's because of his personality and his commitment to protecting Lloyd.

Agreed. Symphonia was great, but the characterization in this game was unbelievable. Especially when I think of the Character quests and the final ending. So emotionally packed. What I didn't like about the game was the random battles, the 2d battle plane, and the generic dungeons. For those reasons i preferred the gameplay of Symphony, but I think Legendia would make a fantastic anime. Best characters and story by far
