Blowing your nose is not ok, but I have a friend who has been to Japan and she said that people fart there all the time, well, what I mean is not about the noise, but they don't care about the smell. Like, if there's a room with two people, or even in a queue, they would just fart. Is that true?
@DeVizardofOZ one thing doesn't have anything to do with the other. what? so japanese people should excuse themselves for existing because some members of a government they don't even knew were jerks? no no, dude it doesn't work that way.
@TheJapanChannelDcom I thank you for your effort sir, even though I may never visit japan, this collection is very beneficial and nicely done that I kept watching non stoping (: . Thanks again for sharing your experiences.
I love your videos! I want to go to japan :) When I lived in Hawaii there was a large Japanese population so I learned some things about their culture but not quite enough to not embarrass myself LOL.
Looking back on this playlist, I can safely say one thing: you really should have called it "How not to make a dick of yourself in Japan". It would have been much better.
For every gaijin with a running nose in Japan: While it is not acceptable to blow your nose, it is common to just sniff it back up (in lack for a better term, I am not an English native speaker) or to use a handkerchief to dab up the watery stuff coming from your nose.
These ''How To - '' Videos are just so helpful for us people who are interested in going to Japan! ^_^ I am grateful that foreigners living in Japan - like yourself, make these videos to help others!
I've heard of the blowing your nose thing. It's the same in South Korea, too. We had 3 foreign exchange students from South Korea (and another from China). One girl, Hee Won Choi, was asking to go to the bathroom every time she had to blow her nose. We finally told her it was OK to blow her nose in public here. :P
How I want to go to Japan.. being in Puerto Rico is horrible..lived here since I was born, and never liked. Too many bad habits over here, no respect either.:/
@FromTheHourglass sure if you have so much money than me how come you never slept with any asian women none the less a japanese women but hey i dont blame you some of us are blessed by the god at all for the hate they have for you :)

I didn't really know where to leave this comment so I chose the How to playlist number one lol:) Just wanted to say thanks for making these videos in all the playlists. This channel is my Japanese Bible. GREAT STUFF!!! I plan to go to japan for 21 days in four years after I finish my duty in the Army and have A LOT of money saved up in that time. So thanks for the extremely useful and interesting information!!!
Thank you for this video. This is very interesting, because I found English people exactly the same. I came from Eastern Europe to UK and I find local culture exactly the same as you've described here in regards of Japan :) Particularly: everybody would be very friendly with you but nobody would want to become close with/ to be associated with you/ help you if you are a foreigner and you are different in any way
I don't understand why here in U.S., people do the opposite!! I love this country, and don't get me wrong, is not all the people but there are a lot of people that are disgusting, no manners, disrespectful, hypocrite, kids have no discipline, no manners and tell their parents pretty much what to do. I know is a free country but why can't we learn something from the Japanese culture. A lot of people are going to hate for this, but unfortunately it's the truth!! Great videos. ; )
my niece went to japan at Christmas and had great difficulty since they don't celebrate Christmas because they are Buddhist. She said she was able to find one place that actually sold Christmas dinner with all the trimmings but that is RARE.
I hate blowing my nose in front of people; I hate the noise, and the fact that it's kind of disgusting which always seemed like bad manners, so I tend to leave the room when I have to do it around strangers or the public. I always felt I was being silly and prudish, but I guess at least I'll fit in in Japan.
Nice video series!! (stumbled upon post earthquake) I have no intent of going to Japan but its nice to learn this stuff so I can understand the Japanese here in my own country. Again thanks :) Apparently I have been quite unintentionally obnoxious ( darn colds). You have a very nice way of putting things.
I must have some japan descent in me, I hate it when someone blows his nose near me, not because it's disgusting, but I hate the sound. Heck, I hate the sound even when I have to blow my nose.
well, here in the west..you do not have to ask permission to be heavily on the piss and act like a retard in public and make ethnic slurs based on prejudice in the form of comedy..I think it is odd that I need to ask your k permission to be heavily on the piss and act like a retard in public and make ethnic slurs based on prejudice in the form of comedy..but, now I know that Japanese people have a low tolerance
This reminds me of when my cousin did a study abroad program in Greece. She made friends with a student from Pakistan, so she gave him the nickname Paki... It took about a month for someone to inform my cousin that calling him Paki was the equivalent of calling a black person the N word. She had no idea! They were being polite because they didn't want to embarrass her... but I think in that situation, informing someone of their mistake is important!
my friends in japan thought it was hillarious to introduce people to me and watch me make an ass out of myself...god I wish I had watched this video, I had no idea about blowing your nose until about half a year after I was there
Also what is acceptable in one part of Japan may not be okay in another, but I think Japanese are more likely to point that out to you.
And when everyone is blowing their nose in front of you even though you thought that it was like a fart, it's probably ok to blow your nose then. During cold season I think Japanese people let that rule slide a bit.
I have a permanent condition and must blow my nose many times a day, especially in the morning. What am I supposed to do? Find a toilet each time? Would it be fine if I just excuse myself, turn my back for a second and blow my nose? I love your videos!
Like I said on my other comment, cultural differences yes, but believe that once in private, i.e. when the westerner is out of sight, Japanese people are as much plagued by conflicts as any society in the world. I am Thai, and Thai people have many values in common with the Japanese. Westerners tend to picture Thais as smiling polite people. But that is often just a facade. Backstabbing is how conflicts are carried out.
MY GOD HOW DO YOU LEARN? I don't know what my life would be like if nobody ever corrected me....:/ I don't mind as long as they're not mean about it......
Will they tell you if you ask them if you've done something wrong?
How about clean restaurant kitchens in Japan? In Chinatown in Oakland, CA, the kitchens are usually filthy. If you saw them and how the food is handled. stored and prepared, you would probably not eat there.
How are the kitchens in Japanese restaurants? Are they clean, dirty...?
Can you discuss the nature of the disgusting Japanese porn? Like vomiting, defecating, urinating while naked and engaged in sexual activity? That seems a lot worse than blowing ones nose in public.
I have a question. How can blowing your nose in public be inappropriate but sniffling is acceptable? Seems like in the US, blowing your nose is ok and sniffling is annoying.
I can understand how blowing your nose in a restaurant or a crowded area is unsanitary or annoying, but is really needs to be done. I guess one could go into a private area to blow their nose...
How about spitting in public? What is the Japanese view on that?
@Frosty1979 I have to agree that majority of Japanese pretends to be kind and humble, which is however the way in Japan. And you sometimes can't tell it's from their heart or not. But I guess that kind of attitude exists in the West too. Some English or Swiss people behave similar unlike Australian or American imho.
@SearchAndBuild Normally you don't have to ask permission to blow your own nose in Japan as well. I suspect it was the case you made very big noise, what it actually mattered. The thing is that you would just say "Do you mind if I ... ?" is mere a manner or mannerism. People know beforehand it's not about the permission.
You say Japanese people are very kind and humble. My perception is though, that the vast majority rather pretends to be kind and humble ... which makes a big difference imho.
In Japan blowing your nose in public is completely OK after you asked others whether he can do it. And it's considered agreeable to make not too much noise. I don't agree with your advice that you can't do what you want to because it's Japan. My advice is "Ask other Japanese people if you are not sure about something."
@TofuUnion well, here in the west..you do not have to ask permission to blow your OWN nose..I think it is odd that I need to ask your permission to blow my own nose..but, now I know that Japanese people have a low tolerance
@SearchAndBuild well, here in the east..you do not have to ask permission to sniff my nose..I think it is odd that I need to ask your permission to bniff my nose..but, now I know that American people have a low tolerance
Well, here in America, being humble, polite and quiet actually seems to draw attention and gets people talking about you like you're weird.
I was brought up to be quiet, polite and respectful around new people. Because of this I actually have a hard time making new friends here. I'm happy to see Japan is different, can't wait to go! But it's getting annoying in the meantime.
I can kinda understand the blowing your nose thing. Over here in the uk it's perfectly normal to blow your nose but not loudly and people usually leave the room to do it! Well from my experience anyway!
This is really interesting! I think, though, the head-tilt thing is more widespread than Japan. Maybe the exact severity of the meaning is different, but I've definitely seen it before and actually, I think I (an American) might even do it myself a little bit. Very cool to see that.
One question about the nose-blowing: If you have to, is it okay to cover your face while excusing yourself (or even admit that you must) or is that pretty much the equivalent of saying, "I have to fart"?
Thats seriously community service what you are doing here. Thanks a lot I learned much from your videos and hopefully will be a good example for a Gaijin when I go to Japan.
I disagree with your comment that Japanese people don't tell you when doing a mistake. I had lived in American family in OR with another 2 Japanese students. They had kept warning me all the time about how to use restroom, kitchen and everything. I think maybe just me in the world who not get along with Japanese people. But I do appreciate their works of art indeed, especially game design, product design cartoon and etc.
What if you have really bad allergies that cause nasal drip, etc. All of these behavioral stipulations, no wonder the suicide rate in Japan is out of control.
being humble and polite is THE most important thing i found. eg- i stayed in a small town called tamano, nobody really spoke english, why should they its their own country and my hayfever started acting up. after trying to explain what i had to the pharmacy sales people, very badly it seemed, a kind lady phoned her friend who spoke english so i could explain to her what i needed, for her friend to then translate it to the sales person. that wouldn't happen in my country thats for sure.
Well just like anywhere ya learn more by listening then by doing. The blowing your nose part is no big deal. I don't blow my nose in public anyways but what about sneezing? That is a little bit harder to control? I tried to once but you might injure yourself trying lol.
Thank you very much for such an informative series of videos! I'm leaving for Japan in a few days and have been reading up on culture, etiquette and do's and don'ts, but this is by far the most concise way to learn about the day-to-day stuff and other interesting things.
I've been looking forward to experiencing Japan, it's culture and customs for a long time. This helps prepare and makes me look forward to it even more.
When he says "don't say my way is better" seriously, don't even mention how you do it differently in your country. I caused all kinds of confusion just by mentioning something was done differently. It was something stupid too, like "In America, the toilets don't have buttons!" Some of the Japanese people who understand English better will understand that you were just making a remark about a difference, but if they don't, you give off a "Japanese toilet isn't good enough for me" vibe.
Anyone blowing their nose in public, anywhere, and in a restaurant, I find disgusting here in the US! And when they put the hanky back in their pocket after they sucked back that flem into their throat to spit it into that hanky, or spit it out in a napkin, Usually old timers with disgusting habits. Uhg,.!
haha while watching this i had to think of the movie 'mr. baseball' it was on tv today and i had a discussion with a friend about that mr. baseball and the image of japanese at that time hehe
thanks so much for what you are doing.....It's just a shame that there are no more Stars to Rate videos.....oh well I will Always give you my thumbs up!!!
Japan ilegally occupy Diaoyu Islands (Japanese: sankaku), capture and torture the Chinese fishermen to make them recognize publicly that Diaoyu is Japanese territory, for there are oil reserves.
Japanese denies to apologize for WWII and until 2010, still pay respect to Yakusumi Monastery every year, you COULDN'T imagine Merkel pays respect to Hitler monument every year.
Launched Rape of Nanking and cruelly killed 300,000 civilians in 10 days, world record.

nice vids! i like, never knew that! xDplz make more!! can you make one about the difference between -san, -chan, -sempai, etc. etc. etc. i've never really got that. :/
umm... actually I don't really like blowing my nose in public so at least i won't have to worry about that. actually where i live alot of people don't like if you sniff because it makes them think of luggies. yuck!
I was an office manager in a language school in Cincinnati, Ohio. We had many, many Japanese people taking English lessons while living here (Procter & Gamble), and I was extremely impressed to experience their kindness, their manners, and their friendliness, I can't tell you! I am so intrigued with their culture. Lovely people!
Subscribed :) Great videos with very useful information. I laughed at the part where you said you could hear the room go quiet when someone blows his nose in public, I can already imagine the confused face of this someone when he didn't know.
whenever i meet japanese ppl in my country china. i am always amazed at japan and alot of stuff. so i say to them like " wow ur country amaze me alot" and they say back " its not that great". is japan really ""not that great""?? --
Hi:)Just discovered you.Im romanian who lives in UK and I always appreciate it the japanese culture ,people and cars:)My youtube Id tells it all:)Ill watch all your videos..How can I rate it 5 stars?
Thanks for your videos. I really hope to live in Japan one day. They are all really helpful. Maybe you could make a video of going to school there or like college? How long have you lived in Japan by the way?
Oh my god... I lived in Japan for a year and I never knew that blowing my nose in public was a bad thing! I feel... really embarrassed right now XD Thank god I still got lots of good friends from there XD I hope I didn't do many mistakes like that during the year....
I love your videos. I was an exchange student to Japan when I was in high school, it was one of the most amazing times of my life. Part of my heart is still in Tendo, Yamagata Japan. At the time I was incredibly shy and very self conscious about not offending anyone. My host family was wonderful and vey helpful in teaching me about their culture and way of behaving. My dream is to get back and give my host father the hug I was to shy to give him then.
Blowing your nose isn't rude! or at least where I live it isn't... it just draws attention to you when you blow your nose loudly. just try to do it quietly and you'll be fine.
But I really enjoy your videos, you're like an anthropologist X)

We tend to forget, that Japan is an island (many...) so, cultures develop differently. We here in Europe pick up a lot from our neighbors.
Of course the Japanese like to forget how RUDE they were during their occupation of other countries.

I am Thai, and Thai people have many values in common with the Japanese. Westerners tend to picture Thais as smiling polite people. But that is often just a facade. Backstabbing is how conflicts are carried out.

They don't tell you if you do things wrong?
MY GOD HOW DO YOU LEARN? I don't know what my life would be like if nobody ever corrected me....:/ I don't mind as long as they're not mean about it......
Will they tell you if you ask them if you've done something wrong?

How about clean restaurant kitchens in Japan? In Chinatown in Oakland, CA, the kitchens are usually filthy. If you saw them and how the food is handled. stored and prepared, you would probably not eat there.
How are the kitchens in Japanese restaurants? Are they clean, dirty...?

How about cutting ones fingernails in public? How do the Japanese people feel about that?
sanfranciscobay 1 year ago
Can you discuss the nature of the disgusting Japanese porn? Like vomiting, defecating, urinating while naked and engaged in sexual activity? That seems a lot worse than blowing ones nose in public.
sanfranciscobay 1 year ago
@sanfranciscobay yeah because people in the USA don't do these things right? :p
you're kinda acting like a retard ;)
kleurhartjeskrijger 11 months ago
I have a question. How can blowing your nose in public be inappropriate but sniffling is acceptable? Seems like in the US, blowing your nose is ok and sniffling is annoying.
I can understand how blowing your nose in a restaurant or a crowded area is unsanitary or annoying, but is really needs to be done. I guess one could go into a private area to blow their nose...
How about spitting in public? What is the Japanese view on that?
sanfranciscobay 1 year ago
@Frosty1979 I have to agree that majority of Japanese pretends to be kind and humble, which is however the way in Japan. And you sometimes can't tell it's from their heart or not. But I guess that kind of attitude exists in the West too. Some English or Swiss people behave similar unlike Australian or American imho.
TofuUnion 1 year ago
@SearchAndBuild Normally you don't have to ask permission to blow your own nose in Japan as well. I suspect it was the case you made very big noise, what it actually mattered. The thing is that you would just say "Do you mind if I ... ?" is mere a manner or mannerism. People know beforehand it's not about the permission.
TofuUnion 1 year ago
You say Japanese people are very kind and humble. My perception is though, that the vast majority rather pretends to be kind and humble ... which makes a big difference imho.
Frosty1979 1 year ago
In Japan blowing your nose in public is completely OK after you asked others whether he can do it. And it's considered agreeable to make not too much noise. I don't agree with your advice that you can't do what you want to because it's Japan. My advice is "Ask other Japanese people if you are not sure about something."
TofuUnion 1 year ago
@TofuUnion well, here in the west..you do not have to ask permission to blow your OWN nose..I think it is odd that I need to ask your permission to blow my own nose..but, now I know that Japanese people have a low tolerance

@SearchAndBuild well, here in the east..you do not have to ask permission to sniff my nose..I think it is odd that I need to ask your permission to bniff my nose..but, now I know that American people have a low tolerance
asymp2 11 months ago 2
Well, here in America, being humble, polite and quiet actually seems to draw attention and gets people talking about you like you're weird.
I was brought up to be quiet, polite and respectful around new people. Because of this I actually have a hard time making new friends here. I'm happy to see Japan is different, can't wait to go! But it's getting annoying in the meantime.

I can kinda understand the blowing your nose thing. Over here in the uk it's perfectly normal to blow your nose but not loudly and people usually leave the room to do it! Well from my experience anyway!
pokerfacex101 1 year ago
Well yeah totally agree is like that old phrase
"When in Roma, Do like Romans Do"
...or something like that
kingdom666 1 year ago
then where do you blow your nose? <:(
queenpuddles 1 year ago
@queenpuddles You can blow nose whenever and wherever you want .
But do not blow nose loudly and don't use handkerchief. You can get free pocket tissues on the street.
nonmama11 1 year ago
This is really interesting! I think, though, the head-tilt thing is more widespread than Japan. Maybe the exact severity of the meaning is different, but I've definitely seen it before and actually, I think I (an American) might even do it myself a little bit. Very cool to see that.
One question about the nose-blowing: If you have to, is it okay to cover your face while excusing yourself (or even admit that you must) or is that pretty much the equivalent of saying, "I have to fart"?

I disagree with your comment that Japanese people don't tell you when doing a mistake. I had lived in American family in OR with another 2 Japanese students. They had kept warning me all the time about how to use restroom, kitchen and everything. I think maybe just me in the world who not get along with Japanese people. But I do appreciate their works of art indeed, especially game design, product design cartoon and etc.
stonecoldnwo 1 year ago
What if you have really bad allergies that cause nasal drip, etc. All of these behavioral stipulations, no wonder the suicide rate in Japan is out of control.
biped19 1 year ago
being humble and polite is THE most important thing i found. eg- i stayed in a small town called tamano, nobody really spoke english, why should they its their own country and my hayfever started acting up. after trying to explain what i had to the pharmacy sales people, very badly it seemed, a kind lady phoned her friend who spoke english so i could explain to her what i needed, for her friend to then translate it to the sales person. that wouldn't happen in my country thats for sure.

Again: awesome work and thanks!

Uhg,.!
OMG,. I sound like a girl!
