He was referring to Induced pluripotent stem cells derived from epithelial cells. Skin cells altered to be stem cells. Another term for it is adult stem cells.

Adult stem cells actually have been proven to provide cures and treatments for various infections and diseases, whereas Embryonic stem cells have not had any research breakthroughs what so ever. They literally have no treatments or cures from embryonic stem cells.

You're correct about the form of stem cells you mentioned. However, the type of stem cells does vary. As any organism matures, it's stem cells progressively differentiate as the tissue matures and those cells receive intercellular signals. The epithelial cells you mentioned are stem cells, but are too differentiated to be used to treat just any disorder, such as SCID. In such a case, donor stem cells must be taken from marrow.

Also, pluripotent cells are more differentiated than are totipotent cells. Totipotent cells have significant potential to provide many breakthroughs - however, they are hard to obtain for study. Also the field is still young, so progress in this promising area will take time.

I assume your point was not meant to imply that embryonic cells have zero potential for making breakthroughs?

I should point out I am unsure if McCain supports study of totipotent cells.

The understanding of the fundamental mechanisms of pluripotency come from embryonic stem cell research. I don't need Wikipedia, I have a Ph.D. in molecular genetics and access to PubMed (which is free, by the way...you should check it out). McCain isn't fooling any real scientists with his half-hearted stem cell 'support.'

I dont mind offending a religious person to potentially save millions of lives. Obama did the right thing and I hate the fact that our government didn't fund this for 8 years while who knows how many people suffered.
