I love the concealed cuts in this sequence. Each piece is pretty long though considering how much easier it would have been not to go with this stylistic approach.
Don't hate on people for telling you there are cuts in here. It's NOT all one shot. Sorry to bust up the movie magic. Still a great scene in a great film.
@Sed1er Why does my comment anger you so much that you have to curse at me and call me names? Is your life so meaningless that you go on the internet and insult others? I watched this movie a few years ago, and remembered I had read the book. Its obvious the book is vastly superior and the movie is Hollywood dramatic bullshit. Just my opinion. "... In the middle of one shot, blood splattered onto the lens, and cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki convinced the director to leave it in ..." (source wiki)
@jeromebressoud I heard that the blood was an accident, and the director liked it, but didnt want blood on the lens for the entire shot, so they went back and painstakingly edited it out after a certain point.
I decided to buy this movie on blu-ray, and I've watched it several times over the last few months. Every time I watch it, I notice something in it that I didn't before.
Like the newspaper clippings on the wall, when they're interrogating Theo. Also the names of the cities on the TV at the beginning, and recurring themes, like when they show photographs in people's homes.
What is the point of keeping the blood on the screen? Is it supposed to remind us that we are indeed watching a movie? Kind of like French New Wave? I have not seen the movie (it is next on my Netflix list), so I don't know if it is part of the plot....
This art style made sense in The Blair Witch Project. It makes sense, and is tolerable, for short burst moments where the story has an actual character filming a story sequence. But to film a whole movie this way, is bad bad bad. It pulls away from the immersion. Instead of the story being presented… I’m constantly thinking, what about the camera man. The camera man shouldn’t exist,… unless it fit’s the story sequence.

@GuestOfGregoryHouseI know that's why they did it... but it doesn't make me feel that it's more realistic. I stand by my last post... which I made, because a group of friends sent this video to me as a link. We are not all gonna’ like the same things... and that's perfectly fine. I’ve met two “fans” who apparently love the movie and camera work. So the movie does have value for some… just not for me, and others like me.
Quite possibly one of the most underrated movies of the past decade. How was this not nominated for best picture? Better yet, how did this not win best cinematography or best editing?
This must be wet dream of the Eddie izzards of today: an england which has the military capability to handle 35 junkies/militants and the resources to move refugees by the 100.000 once a week, despite a global harmagedon.
there are a few hidden cuts but to make it look this seamless and to have an uncut shot this long must have taken tons and tons of money and time choreographing and this is by far, my favorite work by this director apart from Prisoner of Azkaban.
For you film junkies out there, this a a pretty amazing scene. This was done in a single shot which makes you wonder how many times they may have had to redo it! Cleve, you ran right into the gun fire! RETAKE number 100!
I think there's a cut in the blackness from 3:54 because the patterns of blood splatter on the lens change. I think they tried to replicate it but couldn't exactly. I did hear somewhere that there ARE disguised cuts in this shot, but it doesn't change how much of a hugely successful scene it is, technically.
That this movie did not win Best Cinematography (or Picture, for that matter) at the Academy Awards is a disgrace. Children of Men is one of the greatest films of all time! Period!
people need to get over this whole 'british are better/americans are better' debate, its immature & ridiculous. Can you please just quit the bitching and enjoy watching some cinematic excellence that totally follows a unique path in action that isn't stereotypical hollywood style. This film excels in showing that you don't need a shit ton a CGI to make a film brilliant, all you need is a brilliant storyline and well choreographed sequences, this film is a true example of brilliance!
@dixonrussell So true, I would complain with a lot of people that the English Films were better than American, but after reading your comment I agree it is Immature and ridiculous.
Cool the way the White Rasta dies, after all that has happened with him he gets taken out by a lucky burst from an attacker and that's it, no ceremony, death is that sudden.

@NothinGtODisplay1 I'm sorry, it's good but to say this is a piece of cinematic excellence is a bit far fetched. It's just people running away from bullets. Well done, but nothing to read into.
As far as I know, they weren't added in post-production. Some (fake) blood apparently splattered on the camera during filming. They were removed in post-production after a while, as they would have been visually distracting.

@ajaydotcom I believe at 3:56, when the camera pans through the black there is a cut. After this the drops would have been super imposed onto the screen, and as you can see they disappear at different times, simply by fading out the blood splatter graphics. Don't know if it's true, but it's how I would have done this.
@habbocarl agreed--but the visual design was actually inspired by A Clockwork Orange, which gives it that decadent subtlety. wonder if half-life 2 was inspired by Clockwork as well? :D
BTW i personally love how the baby only starts crying around the time that Luke dies. it's like a philosophical easter egg!
Love this movie. Anyway did anyone else notice the fact that at the end of this scene, the soldiers begin to move into this building and up to the other floors. Then theo and the baby leave and then they start shooting up the place right away? with all of those friendlies inside....movie mistake?
@facecheek Thats not the point im trying to make.. i know that the rebels fired a rocket..but that building is full of friendly soldiers at that point and they just open fire on it.
Why didn't Warner took him back for the last Harry Potter!!??Even Rowling wanted him to return! The last movies could have been brillant pieces of cinematography,instead....
@CharlesDickens99 Why cant you just acknowledge him as a director instead of a Mexican Director.... He is perhaps one of the greatest directors to have ever worked along with Almodovar. You know Mexican Film is a brand of its own right. not everyone likes hollywood.
@CharlesDickens99 You're a fucking moron. How do you figure that depicting an oppressive government crackdown on immigration expresses the director's conservative viewpoint on immigration? This movie is clearly waaaaay over your head. Go back to school, ignoramus.
By faaaaaaar one of the best scenes filmed in cinematic history. It has such a real feel to it like your there. The stray bullets flying around hitting people and the no mercy rules of engagement.
@VinceM51 Lol, I totally know what you mean. Rebels vs Combine, but the rebels in this case (or the "Fishes") don't seem nearly as cheery or eager to get mowed down like in HL2. Also, they killed the big Russian guy :(
I love the concealed cuts in this sequence. Each piece is pretty long though considering how much easier it would have been not to go with this stylistic approach.

@NothinGtODisplay1 I'm sorry, it's good but to say this is a piece of cinematic excellence is a bit far fetched. It's just people running away from bullets. Well done, but nothing to read into.

@jnberger you didn't read that comment, it seems

@NothinGtODisplay1 I'm fifteen and I see Tree of Life as a piece of cinematic brilliancy.

blood splatters disappear at 4:08...just wondering how.
ajaydotcom 5 months ago
@ajaydotcom they were added in post-production

@247dman

@JosefGatti Yeah makes sense! :P this is an epic shot in any case....also liked the atonement one.

@ajaydotcom
They removed the blood digitally because the spots would have become too distracting during the later parts of the shot.

@habbocarl agreed--but the visual design was actually inspired by A Clockwork Orange, which gives it that decadent subtlety. wonder if half-life 2 was inspired by Clockwork as well? :D
BTW i personally love how the baby only starts crying around the time that Luke dies. it's like a philosophical easter egg!
facecheek 5 months ago
Love this movie. Anyway did anyone else notice the fact that at the end of this scene, the soldiers begin to move into this building and up to the other floors. Then theo and the baby leave and then they start shooting up the place right away? with all of those friendlies inside....movie mistake?
2323jgrant 5 months ago
@2323jgrant one of the rebels shot a rocket at the soldiers.
facecheek 5 months ago
@facecheek Thats not the point im trying to make.. i know that the rebels fired a rocket..but that building is full of friendly soldiers at that point and they just open fire on it.
2323jgrant 5 months ago
@2323jgrant friendlies were a few floors below rebel fire, although if anything it's a reactionary move by the outside force

Why didn't Warner took him back for the last Harry Potter!!??Even Rowling wanted him to return! The last movies could have been brillant pieces of cinematography,instead....

Strangely, this Mexican director clearly has some pretty conservative views on immigration.
Some have said that this film is about the despair of late-capitalism.
I think it’s about despair caused by naïve immigration policies and failed multi-culturalism leading to Balkanised society.
Pretty much like modern Britain really.
It’s a much better film than 28 days later to which I often mentally compare it.
CharlesDickens99 7 months ago
@CharlesDickens99 Why cant you just acknowledge him as a director instead of a Mexican Director.... He is perhaps one of the greatest directors to have ever worked along with Almodovar. You know Mexican Film is a brand of its own right. not everyone likes hollywood.

@CharlesDickens99
um get fucked
the movie is based on a book
and as for your "mental" comparing to 28 days later
its "mental" alright..
kriskater 7 months ago
@CharlesDickens99 You're a fucking moron. How do you figure that depicting an oppressive government crackdown on immigration expresses the director's conservative viewpoint on immigration? This movie is clearly waaaaay over your head. Go back to school, ignoramus.

By faaaaaaar one of the best scenes filmed in cinematic history. It has such a real feel to it like your there. The stray bullets flying around hitting people and the no mercy rules of engagement.

actually the best scene of the movie starts RIGHT after this clip ended.

@VinceM51 Lol, I totally know what you mean. Rebels vs Combine, but the rebels in this case (or the "Fishes") don't seem nearly as cheery or eager to get mowed down like in HL2. Also, they killed the big Russian guy :(
