your methods are very clear and helpful, im very interested in getting a great dane but i have three toddlers. is it a bad idea to have a dane around little ones?
When I teach the "release" part, I click and treat before giving the release, and don't C/T after saying my release word-- and that works OK, too. I want the dog to be rewarded for staying down, not getting up.... though I understand the logic of your approach too. They both work :-)
@dibassett - Thanks Diane! :-) Yes, I've seen people do it your way too. I was just worried that in that case, the dog would see the "click" as the release signal...therefore when you fade the clicker away, they won't have a clear signal of when the exercise is finished and therefore might be more likely to jump up before it's time...whereas I see clicking after the release word as like rewarding for the WHOLE exercise (like chaining) ie. staying down AND only getting up for the release word.
Hello. I've got an 11 month old German Shorthaired Pointer, and ever since I got him I've been using the "forcing", like pushing his butt down to teach him the command "sit". I recently bought a clicker and I want to start training him with it. So do I start completely from the beginning? Like, waiting for him to sit and then click, and then after a while introducing the word "sit" again? 'Cause he already knows sit, down, left and right paw, jump, heel and basic stuff like that.
i just adopted a pitbull from the local spca. hes about 1 1/2 years old and generally well behaved. the clicker has taken off with him even though weve had him for a short time. these vids are great!
I have a 1 and a half year old dane for the most part he is very good. I would like to work on coming when called because he likes to jump my front yard fence. He also has some separation anxiety issues when my family and I leave. I just recently got a clicker and it seems to be going well. Any suggestions?
@codybrundage Paul Owens the original dog whisperer (can get thru Netflix) or The Loved Dog with Tamar Geller might offer some suggestions for helping your dog cope with anxiety.
Had my Great Dane Puppy for about a month now, she is 3 months old. At what age did you start CLicker Training your dane? And at what age do you recommend it?? Thanks!
You can start clicker from Day 1! That is what's so great about it - it is completely positive and communicates to the dog in a way he understands (as opposed to assuming they understand English!) - Clicker is IDEAL for puppies - it teaches you to look for & reward good behaviour in your pup - when most people ignore that and only give attention when the dog is being naughty - so encourages good habits from the beginning, rather than trying to fix problems later.
We didn't start Honey until about 2yrs but wish we started earlier - from when we brought her home. The earlier you start, the better but it's never too late! Check out my Intro to CT video - PART 1, which shows you how to start, especially the "switch on the clicker" exercise which is VERY important. Good luck!
Were you starving in that movie? I saw you watching the foodables hand very closely. Down stay is my best exercise. I often practice it on my own, especially when I don't want to come into the house.
