If the main writers of Half Life ever had to contradict what happened in Blue Shift, Opposing Force or Decay they´d do it instantly so I guess it´s canon until or if they ever do: "I guess you will be able to identify as canon those story elements we continue to build on and develop and mention repeatedly as the story progresses."

In actual fact, Barney was meant to know Gordon long before the Black Mesa incident. Alot of stuff mentioned by Alyx and Barney could not have happened on that same day, such as racing each other through the vents to unlock Kliener's office.

Hey I want to get the original Half Life because I loved Half Life 2.
I can either get the original with the 1998 graphics with blue shift and opposing force, or I can either get the 2004 source version with just the original with a bit better graphics.
If you think Blue Shift and Opposing Force are worth getting, I'll get the old one but if you think I can just skip them without missing anything then I'll get the source version.

@bleachangel8 Why not, Blue shift was good, just short, remember Opposing Force and Blue Shift are just a few extra levels for the game like DLC except modern day DLC is barley any content for twice the price, I think Valve does a good job at making things worth your money and Gearbox is a great game making company

I think blue shift has actually matured quite well. Ok yes back in the day it was a waist of time. But now you can download it off steam or buy it second hand for just a few pennies. For that you get a few extra levels and more importantly, the high definition pack that makes the original half life and opposing force look twice as good which gives you an excellent excuse to play them both again. Because of that it makes this game well worth it.

I just recently bought the valve complete pack. While playing have life i couldn't help but enjoy the nostalgic effect it left on me. I do feel that the review was a tad harsh on blue shift. Barney was a simple security guard and was not intended to be a heroic somewhat savior as Gordan Freeman was. That is not an excuse for the games length and weaponry, but more or less and explanation.
How is it not canon? Barney and Freeman just don't meet in this game. There are most likley friends and know each other before this event, in face the Half Life Manual for PS2 pretty much states this.

Yep. Half Life's expansion packs were disappointments. In fact, most are terrible, but it's the fact that these were tied to one of the FPS games of all time that made them seem so half assed.
There's a mod out there called "Azure Sheep" that does what Blue Shift attempted to do, but does it much better. It's worth checking out. The best part is that it's free, introduces at least 5 new weapons, and has multiple new, unique enemies.

This expansion wasn't good. You rarely go to Xen, there are limited alien enemies, and the ending was unsatisfying. What's the point of Blue Shift if the G Man has no interest in Barney? The only good part is the improved graphics. That's it.

Well for my opinion Blue shift is a decent game, BUT very very very short, almost like playing a demo. I was very disappointed when I finished the game because I couldn believe that was the end of the game. and a HUGE HUGE part was in opposing force you actually saw freeman so you could relate to the first one. I was looking forward to the scene where you would have met freeman with Kleiner and seen him jump off to xen,, In the first half life you meet barney so why didn they include that??
Yeah, when the game ended i was like wtf!!!! Also AI seem kinda stupid compared to half-life. When i crouched next to them they just did nothing, also there's glitches everywhere in this game. I completely agree with you. 1/5 game, review 5/5.

He's not saying Half-Life copied something, he's saying Blue Shift's Story is a retelling of Op4, which is a retelling of Half-Life, which is essentially a more elaborate retelling of Doom, is very similar to the plot of Eden and also similar to the plot of a Stephen King novella "...which itself was probably probably not original in the first place."
Though I did enjoy Blue Shift, the best thing in that game is the Chumtoads Lair area. It contains snarks in it so new weapon for Barney and it contains a funny little secret within the game.

I thought that it was funny when you were in the elevator with the two scientists, when you started to go down. The two scientists then looked like they were hopping up and down, so you did the same. It just made me laugh. :)
I played the HL1 games in reverse - Blue Shift first, Opposing Force second, Half Life 1 last.
I love Opposing Force and have replayed it many times, and also spent a lot of time playing it online. I liked Half Life 1 a lot too, but replay value for Blue Shift is pretty much nil, except for the couple shootouts with the army - the trainyard, especially.

well. treyarch was most responsible for cod 5 and 1,2,3. activision was a bit helpful too the treyarch games but treyarch mainly developed cod 1,2,3,5
@lake651 I would recomend to try out Opposing force though. Even if it has some flaws and is not as good as HL1, it is pretty fun just to see all the weapons and so on. And the multiplayer, although it is outdated and not as used as it used to be is still fun.
Blue Shift on the otherhand, I can only agree is a shit.
I said it's the worst FPS I've played. I didn't say it's the worst FPS ever. I appreciate that English isn't your first language but if you're going to insult people in English, you ought to understand what your insultee is actually saying first.
And the game is awful, so it's definitely a contender.

The game is nowhere near the worst FPS ever (I understand that you said it was the worst FPS you ever played but still), it's main weakness is it's length.
I do think it deserves at least two stars, I'd give it a 5/10.
I just beat it. I don't know why you were so hard on it really. It's not great, but some of it is worth experiencing. Xen is awful, of course, but then Xen is always awful. It is not different enough from HL1 to hate it so much more. The level design isn't as good and there are too many cheap headcrab placements. Plus points are it doesn't end on Xen climaxing with a crap boss battle.
That video just gave me a reason not to watch antisocialfatman's other reviews. Now, the reason why you don't see any Race X in Blue Shift is obvious: Gearbox had the idea of Race X and they put it in Opposing Force. Valve however didn't like the idea and so didn't let Gearbox make another Race X game. And once again, you see Gordon Freeman three times in the game.
On Race X, why they aren't in the game isn't relevant. The fact that they aren't in the game is the problem, which is why I addressed it.
I didn't say you don't SEE Freeman. I know all three times that you see him. I said you don't interact with him. Yet Freeman interacts with Barney multiple times in Half-Life. It's not a difficult concept to grasp.
I'm happy for you to not watch my videos, but please do not base your decision on such faulty reasoning.
The funny thing is, I personally like BlueShift almost as much as Half-Life and much more than Opposing Farce because it's short and to the point and in my opinion, did ad some stuff to the gameplay like the exploding barrels. (let the flames begin.)

Counterstrike on the other hand is very much worthy of a low score. Never saw what the fuzz was with counterstrike (with its realistic weapons and dumbo deathmatch).
To set things straight. While nothing beats the original Halflife, I found both Blue Shift and Opposing Force to be good expansions with similar gameplay factors what made Halflife great.
I thought that the two expansions were supposed to be the shit (according to some HL fanboys)? Oh well, one more reason not to play them, not that I ever wanted to... Played the new verison of Riddick btw? Would be nice to see a review on Dark Athena.
I've never yet made it through the HL expansions (although HL1 and HL2 are probably my 2 favorite games of all time), and now I know I won't even bother with Blue Shift.

Sorry I only managed to get half of my post posted. I was going to say after, you never meet Barney in hl1 either, yet they are friends in hl2. I suspect Gordon was in black mesa for a few days before hl1 takes place, and I would assume he met Barney then.

This review is a bit flawed because you're playing expansions in hopes that they would have greatly improved in some sort of mechanics or graphics [Blue shift does have a graphics pack], but if you actually had played it when it first came out, everyone thought it was still great. People back then were still in awe from the original half-life and were content with the graphics it provided [seeing as it was top notch at the time]. B.S. is also considered cannon- play HL-2, you'll see it.

He's not saying Half-Life copied something, he's saying Blue Shift's Story is a retelling of Op4, which is a retelling of Half-Life, which is essentially a more elaborate retelling of Doom, is very similar to the plot of Eden and also similar to the plot of a Stephen King novella "...which itself was probably probably not original in the first place."

Though I did enjoy Blue Shift, the best thing in that game is the Chumtoads Lair area. It contains snarks in it so new weapon for Barney and it contains a funny little secret within the game.

I played the HL1 games in reverse - Blue Shift first, Opposing Force second, Half Life 1 last.
I love Opposing Force and have replayed it many times, and also spent a lot of time playing it online. I liked Half Life 1 a lot too, but replay value for Blue Shift is pretty much nil, except for the couple shootouts with the army - the trainyard, especially.

@antisocialfatman Because Activision is Milking the franchise like when they Milk Tony Hawk and Guitar Hero, it is prety ovbious to see that... but do you think CoD4 is a bad game? because for me is an excelent Game just like the Other Infinity Ward CoDs (I haven Played MW2 so i dont know if its like CoD4).
I think the Greed of Activision will destroy Infinnity Ward and its hapening right now with the whole thing with the developers that got kiked out.

@lake651 I would recomend to try out Opposing force though. Even if it has some flaws and is not as good as HL1, it is pretty fun just to see all the weapons and so on. And the multiplayer, although it is outdated and not as used as it used to be is still fun.
Blue Shift on the otherhand, I can only agree is a shit.

The game is nowhere near the worst FPS ever (I understand that you said it was the worst FPS you ever played but still), it's main weakness is it's length.
I do think it deserves at least two stars, I'd give it a 5/10.

I just beat it. I don't know why you were so hard on it really. It's not great, but some of it is worth experiencing. Xen is awful, of course, but then Xen is always awful. It is not different enough from HL1 to hate it so much more. The level design isn't as good and there are too many cheap headcrab placements. Plus points are it doesn't end on Xen climaxing with a crap boss battle.

That video just gave me a reason not to watch antisocialfatman's other reviews. Now, the reason why you don't see any Race X in Blue Shift is obvious: Gearbox had the idea of Race X and they put it in Opposing Force. Valve however didn't like the idea and so didn't let Gearbox make another Race X game. And once again, you see Gordon Freeman three times in the game.

On Race X, why they aren't in the game isn't relevant. The fact that they aren't in the game is the problem, which is why I addressed it.
I didn't say you don't SEE Freeman. I know all three times that you see him. I said you don't interact with him. Yet Freeman interacts with Barney multiple times in Half-Life. It's not a difficult concept to grasp.
I'm happy for you to not watch my videos, but please do not base your decision on such faulty reasoning.

The funny thing is, I personally like BlueShift almost as much as Half-Life and much more than Opposing Farce because it's short and to the point and in my opinion, did ad some stuff to the gameplay like the exploding barrels. (let the flames begin.)

You said Barney never meets Gordon in Blue Shift, so it cannot be canon because they are friends in half life 2. But in episode 1, you learn that Gordan and Barney used to climb through the ventilation system to get into dr Kleiner's office.

This review is a bit flawed because you're playing expansions in hopes that they would have greatly improved in some sort of mechanics or graphics [Blue shift does have a graphics pack], but if you actually had played it when it first came out, everyone thought it was still great. People back then were still in awe from the original half-life and were content with the graphics it provided [seeing as it was top notch at the time]. B.S. is also considered cannon- play HL-2, you'll see it.

I played every Half-Life game at the time of its release.
I wasn't playing them in the hopes that they would improve, just be as good as. I don't care about graphics.
BS came out in 2001 - way after the Honeymoon period.
Valve said in an interview the only canon part of OpFor and BS is Black Mesa being destroyed.
