Hope I can always access this great video which evokes similar feelings as the endless summer movies. No straps, harnesses, falling in the water, feeling the wind in your sail, hiking out....awesome. Interesting comments below--it seems all great inventions have many contributors. It's all good......
July 1976 I was on a Cape Cod beach and a friend of me comes down with a THE Windsurfer. There were some moments during the learning phase but it is 2010, summer is coming and for sure I will windsurf again. Thank you Hoyle !
Anywhere there's wind, water and low expectations of performance! Just kidding, the original works well in the conditions it was designed for. Many lakebound have learned on this. But today it's about as useful as a third nipple in over winds over 12 knots.
This reminds me of the year I made my windsurfing certificate, 1979 on the german island Fehmarn, on a TenCate Windsurfer, I was 13 and one day was around 6bft.
There's no date listed here, but I'm assuming this is from about 1970-1975.
Tom Blake put a sail on one of his hollow wood surfboards at Waikiki in the middle 1930s. He didn't stand up on his board, but paddled it lying down. That's 35 to 40 years before this, regardless.
The windsurfer was actually invented by Newman Darby. In a celebrated patent law case, Mr. Darby's claim for precedence was lost over the definition of "universal joint". The Hoyle-Schweitzer lawyers pointed out their "flexible joint" was different than that described in the Darby patent. Of course the intent was identical... nonetheless, Darby lost millions, and the rest is history... I don't argue the case, only point this out. The H/S group was not the first... they won on a technicality.

Man, those things were strictly low wind, Amazing how far this sport come. So much easier to learn and become proficient.

Long board windsurfing is not a drag, it's one of many different ways to experience windsurfing.

That's an odd comment. Nothing could be further from the truth!

Haven't used my board in 20 years.
I need to re-fit it and get out next summer.
This has inspired me.
