I agree with your top five. The Stones were a live band ,not an album band. But what about Dylan or better yet David Bowie, who will be up there with Beethoven and Mozart when he is gone. In the UK, the Jam were voted the third best British act of all time. They are one of my favorites from that era, but they were voted ahead of Zepplin. Simple Minds, who became an arena rock band, rivalled U2 in the 80s, I feel were underrated. Yes, Muse reminds me of U2 and even Queen at times.

As far as what their best album is or was, that of course will always be subjective. Like what is the best Beatles' album? How did they sell out? I think you might have answered that question yourself. They wanted to have mass appeal, and as a result, they are now a corporate, stadium rock band, much like The Who, Led Zepplin, Yes etc. later became. Nothing wrong with making money. It just goes against what I rebelled against in the late 70s. Influential, creative? Anything after '76 is rehash.

I don't think Muse will break into that category nor do I think Muse have come out with an album that can match Achtung Baby

Early U2 were comparable to EATB but what broke U2 away from the rest of the post-punk pack was the Unforgettable Fire, which is generally known as their 3rd best album behind Joshua tree and Achtung Baby

@Itravel701 As far as top 5 bands in the world I use 5 criteria to try and objectively judge bands:

Critical success, Commercial Success, Influence on following bands, longevity and and most importantly the test of time.

U2 are on the same tier as The Who, The Rolling Stones and Led Zeppelin just below The Beatles as the top 5 bands of all time, with objective criteria.

Now I prefer Muse but that is only my opinion, the facts and figures U2 ahead of them by a very large distance.
