  • is foam core board a styro? please advise

  • Thank you! Which glue do you use for the ribbon?

  • You're very welcome! I use a glue gun. Quick and easy. :)

  • Laura, I ordered a foam core board and used it under a corset cake I made this weekend. I used your methods shown here and it turned out so great! I just wanted to say thanks for all the tutorials you've made. You are a inspiration to many and I wanted to let you know that you are appreciated. I know you are busy and can't do all that we beg for (LOL) but I am grateful! Thanks again and I pray you continue to have success in everything.

  • That is SO AWESOME!!! You have no idea how gratifying it is to here you say that!!! I'm so glad that you liked the method and I'm sure your cake came out awesome! I will be adding custom foam core boards to my store and will be taking custom orders so if you ever need an odd shape or just a regular shape foam core board, let me know! Yay! Your comment made my day! THANK YOU! :)

  • @laurapoopie I'm glad to have made your day but I feel it's important to give back to those who take the time to make these tutorials. I would be too shy to film my cakes! They are still very amater-ish! LOL!...Do you know what your board will cost yet? Also, do you know how far in advance you will need the order placed? I would love to give you some business! The irregular boards you make are very appealing! And again...THANKS!

  • Thank you so much! I appreciate you! The cost of the boards will really depend on the sizes. I'm thinking anywhere from $20 to $30 whatever shape. I'm glad you like them! It'll still be a while before they're up but if you should need one before then just let me know ok? Thank you! :)

  • Hi Laura, quick question... What kind of board do you use?!

    Thank you!! :-)

  • Hi. Foam core board. :)

  • @laurapoopie Thank you!!! :-D

  • You're welcome! :)

  • Sorry, I saw that right after I posted the question. LOL!

  • Hi. Yes, in the video I talk about how I always cut the boards myself. They do have them at Hobby Lobby or Michaels. They're about 1/2" thick. If you ever need a cake board cut in a certain shape, I also take custom orders for those via my Etsy store. Just let me know. I'm here to assist! :)

  • Hey Laura! Thanks soooo much for this wonderful tutorial! Just one quick question, the part I'm not sure about is, do you cut into the fondant to mark where the cake goes, or do you place it right on top of the dried fondant covered board?

  • You're very welcome! I'm glad you liked this tutorial! Sometimes I'll cut a circle in the fondant after I put it on the board just so I don't waste fondant. The one in this tutorial was a pretty small board so that's why I didn't cut out the circle. But if the cake going on the board is 10" or bigger, then I'll put a cardboard cake board the same size as the cake and mark it and cut it out with my pizza cutter. In some of my videos you see the large hole in the fondant. Hope this helps! :)

  • do you make a poni cake?

  • I've made a "My Little Pony Cake". :) You can check out the vid on my channel. :)

  • love your tutorials. they are so helpful. do you have a facebook page?

  • Thank you so much! Yes m'am! I certainly do! I have all of the links to my face book pages and to my Etsy store on my channel for you to easily click on. :) Hope to see you there! Glad you liked this tutorial! :)

  • Laura: Thank you...this does help! I guess I will have to skip the step when smoothing the edges of the fondant with the smoother. If I do this, it will ruin my impression.

  • Correct! You are so welcome friend! Let me know how it works out for you! :)

  • Oh Wow, I am definitely gonna try your method and try shortening as well. I have been using water.

  • Awesome! Let me know how you like it! :)

  • Excellent tutorial! Thank you. Question: At what point do you use your impression mats?

  • Thank you! Glad you liked it! I like to use the impression mat after I put the fondant on the board. If you are going to use an impression mat, then I would roll the fondant out just a tad bit thicker. Once the fondant is on the board, I make the impression before cutting the excess fondant off as the impression mat will spread the fondant out somewhat. Once the impression is there, then I cut off the excess fondant on the edges. Hope this helps! :)

  • Thanks Laura,

     its really good video <3

  • Nice to hear! Thank you! :)

  • I bet the saw gives you much cleaner edges too. Is that an area in your house or did you get a cake shop?! Either way I love your set up!

  • Oh definitely cleaner edges. This is my cake studio in my home which also happens to be my shop. LOL! :)

  • Thanks for this laura!!!

  • You're very welcome! :)

  • Are these types of boards available in squares or rectangles? I don't think I have seen them in my craft stores but then again I usually buy cake boards and they aren't very sturdy. Thank for the tip.

  • Yes, they are large rectangles and you usually find them where all the poster boards are. :)

  • Very informative. Thanks for taking the time to record a tutorial. How far in advance do you cover your boards? Lastly, do you think you will record a video of you covering a cake with fondant? That is the most challenging for beginners, like myself, and I would love to see your method if possible. Thanks and God bless.

  • Thanks! Glad you liked it! :) I usually cover the board just about an hour or so before I start decorating my cake. I remember covering cakes with fondant was the most challenging thing for me to learn as well. I actually learned by watching videos here on YouTube. There are many many great videos already posted on youtube that help tackle the problem. :)

  • Sorry really hard to type with my 2 old so on my lap, he wants to see your spongebob cake., but I meant to say I have covered a few cake boards, but they never looked so great as yours. Now I have to show him your spongebob cake.

  • LOL! Adorable! :)

  • Thank you very much, i haven't a few boards but they never looked so great as this, thanks for the tips, surely will be usely in the future.

  • You're welcome! Thanks for watching! :)

  • Do you put your cakes on top right away? Or you let it dry for a couple of hours?

    Love your video! :D

  • Either or. It really doesn't matter. But, usually I wait just a little. Not by choice, but because I always cover the board first, then the cakes. So weather the board likes it or not, it waits. LOL! But you could put it on immediately. :)

  • Wow, I always wonder how to do this. Thank you so much for posting this video as well as the tip on how to get rid of the powder sugar, thanks again!

  • You're very welcome! :)

  • Thanks for this video. You did a great job explaining it.

  • That's wonderful to hear! Thank you! :)

  • Why do you actually cover the board with fondant? Couldn't I just paint it (sorry anout this probably stupid question) :) x

  • Not a stupid question at all. Mainly the reason we cover boards with fondant is for the "look" of it. Covering it with fondant makes it more uniform with the cake. The decor matches. In my opinion, it's more appealing to the eye than just covering it with paper or aluminum or colored foil. You don't have to cover it with fondant, it's just a preference for some decorators like myself. :)
