Great piece of history. A crime that so few ever made it out of Bristol Ave and even fewer have ever been seen on the public highway. It's rarity and performance makes it beyond a classic in my eyes. This was the only TVR Speed 12 used on the public roads. It took a hugh amount of time, cost and the skills of a small group of very talented engineers to complete. A very special car - never again repeated.

It's a pity the Speed 12 was cancelled - given TVR's current position imagine what the 12 could have done for them. Around a track this would have been the fastest production car in the world easily. The only car that would be able to touch it is the Caparo T1. I geniunely think TVR would be in a much better position now if they had build the 12.

Only a very few of these were ever made. It was deemed unsuitable for any normal person to handle after the TVR boss at the time drove it. It does look dramatic and cool tho. There was hardly any V12 sound, it's just burbling through London, the sound of which was barely audible above the wind noise/engine sound of the rental car attempting to follow it - which is why music was dubbed over.

No, thats actually the only one... Although another chap is currently resurrecting one from bits of old racecar bodies. It won't have a speed 12 engine in it though. As far as I know, only 5 engines were built, and 2 survive - one in this car and another in a workshop somewhere.

It's a shame that the speed twelve never made it to full production but then it never could. TVR never liked to provide driving aids such as ABS Traction control and a like. This means that it would be almost impossible for Joe Bloggs to own/drive a fire breathing dragon like the speed 12. Remember cars like the Veyron and AMG/M5 are tamed with automatic gear boxes and electric wizardry that make them drivable on normal roads by normal people.

It isnt, have you ever heard the 12 properly? It's like a Spitfire engine. The music on this is because the footage was shot from inside another car; you can only just hear the 12's exhaust note anyway due to this.

According to an article I read in a reputable British car mag, the original incarnation of the engine made an estimated 940 bhp. They had to estimate because when they hooked the engine to their 1,000bhp-rated dynomometer, they sheared the driveshaft in two. So they measured the individual banks one at a time and got 470bhp.  Peter Wheeler, who owned the company at the time, drove the car home and pronounced it "too powerful to use". Thus, plans to produce the road-going version were scrapped

I used to talk to one of the engineers who worked on it. It's 0-60 would have been around 3.5 with grippy tyres (think the kind fitted to a Veyron). This is because the car was designed for rolling GT starts. Top speed would have been around 230mph sans rear wing, he reckoned anyhow. The scary stuff is the time it would have taken to get there....You're talking MUCH faster than Veyron 0-200mph.

HOWEVER, they was a sighting of an ALMOST complete Speed 12 engine sat in the TVR factory shortly before it shut. What became of it nobody knows.....there is also an original Purple Speed 12 body shell lying around in a garage in the midlands, as posted on Pistonheads......
