I knew a guy who tried that with the tape recorder and the pay phone. It didn't work. He also try to do what Matthew Broadrick did in "Wargames" (taking a piece of metal, unscrewing the receiver on a pay phone, and touching the inside with the piece of metal.) Dude coudn't get that cap to unscrew.
