Just by luck, a group of friends and I hopped onto one of these trains yesterday. We all looked around and looked at each other like, what the heck?! It was soooooooo cool, we were so lucky to get onto it, what a nice surprise! Thanks for posting the video, I was hoping it would be online so I could show it to my husband!
These were old when I was a kid 40 years ago. I rode those things twice a day for years. Way too often I rode between the cars with my best friend Doug. We use to call it subway surfing. In summer when all the windows were open the sound was a constant deafening roar. Too often they would break down between stations & one of those times I was stuck on that train almost 6 hours. I remember the wicker like strands that were woven into the green seats.
I was switching trains at Rockefeller to go into Brooklyn the other day. One of these came barreling in on the Uptown platform. I contemplated running up and over to catch it. But it was just after work and my dogs were barking. Now I regret it.
@SylvanaForrester You don't sound like you have an accent? Brooklyn, eh, and you admit to it also? Jeez. What, some Juniors Famous mebbe? I slice of that will knock the hell outta your appetite y'know.
Jeet yet or wut?
Oh my error, you were "contemplating." Bonus points for capitalizing "Uptown" platform. (Yeah, you're Upper Eastside is my guess. One of those pied–à–terre joints that you need a Sherpa to get to. That would make your pets pedigreed Himalayan Sheepdogs perchance?)
I remember they did use this type train on the 3rd Av. El. I also remember the door. There was one door at each entrance instead of the two doors at each entrance that are in trains today.

I remember the first subway car so well. If there was a crack in the seat, it really hurt because it was hard plastic. I am dating myself.

Are you allowed to walk between cars on a vintage train or is that law still in effect?

Ceiling fans! Wow!
Nuthin' like the stink of a vintage subway car in the summer without air-conditioning.
Thanks for the memories.

@76Cent Oh, of course, the big coats and pasty complexions are a clue.
I was speaking rhetorically in a reminiscent sort of way. Heyyy, who axed you anyways Mr-all-caps?

The "F" Train is the IND 6th Ave Express.
Signal337 3 years ago
Definitely not an 8th Avenue train. Signage clearly says that it goes from Forest Hills to 2nd Av. If anything, it's an F Train, 6th Avenue Local
