  • nice job, man! I'm learning this piece, and hearing it from you is a great way to hear it right!!

  • Really great!! Keep up the good work!! I'm doing this for solo and ensemble!! So excited!!

  • I want to dislike this just cause im jelous lol! good job!

  • @Mavonor

    It was still very good.

Where's your perfect version, smart ass?

Sometimes expression and musicality outweigh technical perfection.

  • @Mavonor How about you go learn it and play it yourself. Derpfuck.

  • You don't play it right, the notes are wrong...You don't play whats written on the pariture...

  • @Flohoriaaaan and he looks too old to be missing that many notes

  • @darthcamronius Too old to be missing that many notes? Please tell me you're kidding.

  • i noticed in the middle of the song you started to "dead stick" the right hand alot..

  • Damn, i have to perform this tomorrow and i didn't study it a lot. I'll have to play while reading i gues, i hope it will work out

  • Hey, sounds good overall. The base tonic in the left hand octaves will come with correct wrist rotation using Stevens grip. This is a good easy piece to be able to have to show musicianship musicality while performing. Good job.

  • I LOVE this solo. its really hard for me because last year was the first time i ever picked up a pair of mallets, but i'm finally doing it and im having trouble with the interval changes. its like super hard for me and i get bad 4 mallets blisters but its worth it lol.

  • I'm learning this right now for my solo, it sounds really cool!! :D

the roll from D to C on the last page is giving me a hard time :\

  • Man, it's been 5 years since I played this song. I never learned the end of it lol. I was going to do it for solo and ensemble my senior year of high school but ended up doing it on my main instrument (trombone). Man, I love this piece. I still have my marimba sticks and this piece in my trombone case. Good times!

  • do you use the Stevens grip? or maybe burton-grip? I like to use Burtons

  • @storesund1 hes using stevens. i like stevens better for marimba, and burtons for vibes (cuz everythings on the same level, more power)

  • @asian069 I somehow managed to get way to used to the Burton grip, probably because i never had a drum teacher the first 3-5 years. Maybe i should try out the Stevens a bit? I play mostly the marimba tbh

  • nicely done, I did this solo during high school. something was buzzing... grr

  • Im playing this for my solo this year and its good to hear someone else play it. And I'm not sure why you all think it's okay to critique him over youtube if he wanted your help he would have asked and besides he probably has a lesson teacher or band director for that

  • I must say I love this song. It was of course, my first Marimba Solo, but I loved it, and got a one rating at my schools solo and small ensemble with the wrist bells.

  • Sounds good generally, but something for you to keep in mind: there are no cesuras written into the piece. All the fermati move right on in the music. Well done, though

  • u need to use softer Mallets and ur rushing at the beginning but over all well done

  • An excellent job. I am doiong this piece for solo/ensemble, and I love the piece. But I am denfinentally speed up the 6/8 part, because it sounds allot better when played at the temp you played it, great work!

  • learnin this now. been playing for 3 monthes. interesting to see how someone else plays it.

  • Comment removed

  • woah bunches of tempo changes and wrong notes at the beginning but you have pretty good technique

  • @whitecastleawesome You never know not everyone provides the right sheet music...Also,in the music there seems to be a lot of changes in dynamics and tempo. This is a very hard song to learn,so don't hate

  • Omg I remember playing this in band. I loved this song, and you have played it amazingly. Outstanding job! Thank you for uploading. :D

  • The piece sounds fantastic! But it sounds as though someone forgot to turn of a snare somewhere...haha!

  • @CelaNaPasEtePrise To me it more sounds like a hi-hat... don't think it's a snare drum

  • this song is sweet but tooooo many people play this. thats why im playing rhythm song instead, and its way harder. i wish i would have been able to play this song but waaay too many people play this and i dont want to be another one of those guys the judges want to stab.

  • I reall loved this video and the solo its soo amazing and towards daend are those called trembles.... 3:00 so mysterious n awesome

  • You play this song exceptionally well. I definitely wish I could get it to your speed, but for now I'm stuck at a slower tempo. It's an awesome piece, especially the 6/8 bit~! I love the freeform-like roll section as well, that's definitely fun to play.

  • you're technic is great and it's very expressive.

I did this one, too, and now I'm working on Frogs.

    Good job!

  • excellent roll quality! You performed this piece very well

  • Ah man I remember learning this piece in 6th grade, good times.

  • nice roll quality, especially at 1:40. if you dont mind me asking, how old were you when you learned this?

  • you played some parts wrong at the begining if you read the music right it changes a little bit at the verry begining. Other than that it was good :)

  • ........boy whats that try that a bid and when you reel know all notes and know how to play them (not goes slower at the hard part and play that 2 times and so on)

than it would be interesting perhaps...but.....goes better :D

perhaps i will post a version how i play that :D

  • @lol11lol11lol un retard

  • digging that marimba man!

    what mallets are you using?

  • i think u really did an awesome job u just need to work on the slower part =]. im currently learning this song 2 for solo and ensemble

  • why'd you change up the rythems?

  • Great 4-mallet technique! Does your school have a drumline? If they do, I would definately recommend you joining!

  • thanks! @54dmband

  • that was a great performance! i'm learning this solo for next year. do u hav any suggestions i should consider?

  • @percussionist642 i have played this and received a 1 at solo ensemble festival, some suggestions i would have are practice the rolling section with a metronome, to make sure they are all on tempo, since this tempo is very slow

  • If you say from a metronomic stand point than yes i agree a met. is a great idea, but if your going for more Musicality..when i played this piece for solo and ensemble I did what felt right, shaping with dynamics and such.

  • @54dmband haha at 58, i wouldnt balme u haha

  • Take it very slow to start off. USE A METRONOME at least to get everything down! then you can add in the dynamics/musicality.

  • Hey great job.....this video really helped me a lot learning and getting a one rating on this piece for solo ensemble in 8th grade

  • nice job! I'm currently learning this one and it's a challenge for me

  • I really enjoyed your performance - it was rhythmic and musical!

  • This makes me wish I was completely prepared for tomorrow, having a Solo/Ensemble night and playing this very piece on Marimba..

  • @Draxor99 i bet you did just fine.

  • same here

  • hey, where is this guy from?

  • haha one the top 5 solos played at solo and ensemble :D lolz

  • @ModHermione haha, it is the top song, lol

  • So I'm also playing this piece and I was wondering if anyone has any insights on which grip to use?

  • there is really no "best" grip, they all have their strong points and weak points to each other. If it means anything to you, most real big name marimbists use traditional and burton. (Don't get me wrong don't, i'm not dissing stevens grip, it was the first grip i learned before i switched to traditional.)

  • this was obviously posted a long time ago, but for everyone watching now, remember that the right hand pattern in the beginning changes the second time (at the end also)

  • i'm playing this for my audition at Arizona State University. it seemed easiest out of all the music in my instructor's binder, but its fun

  • good job overall. i like the mallets. maybe try for a little more dynamic variation just as an element of showmanship. you're losing some of the capability for this with the octave intervals because you're actually moving your hands side to side and not striking with the weight of the mallet as much as possible. The tempo is inconsistent through the 2nd page because you slow down for the part where your hands are in sync. These are very nitpicky, overall it was very clean and well done.

  • The zoom H4n is a great recording device.. and good job on the song btw. :P

  • great job playing lovely piece. one thing that bothers me. the marimba it make this loud vibrating shake sound not sure. but great work on the piece good job.

  • hold on.... i heard one more.... but dang dude, this was still beautifully done. major props. I play too, but I have no vids up. just bought my own marimba, so my chops should be gettin pretty nasty soon

  • very nice! this is by far the best quality sound and playing wise! keep up the good work! I could only catch two mistakes, and it wasn't nearly as bad as the others i've seen on youtube.

  • Do You Trade?

  • what type of microphone did you use to record this ? if i want to record something there always is this annoying sound at loud parts

  • Hello! Best solution I've found is a Sony PCM-D50 if you can afford it! As far as Cameras, the Cannon Vixia HF11 (and up) has built in level controls and a very good mic!

  • amazing :D

  • what grip do you suggest for this piece?

  • Steven's grip/. Steven's would work best because of the occasional octave you have to hold, and the tight intervals.

  • Nice verry good :)

  • man this cool im also doing this piece for solo and ensemble i thought i'd look it up 2 get pointers and did i!

  • Excellent job dude, I'm learning this right now for solo and ensemble. I'm wearing the wrist bells!

  • Thank you. Yes it sounds much better with wrist bells but i didn't have them at the time of the recording.

  • @gappani I played this more than ten years ago, and you do it very well. I can tip you to use the wrist bells on your feet. It's easier to control and they do not disturb on more sensitive parts, like the legato in the middle.

  • I didn't wear the wrist bells because this song is written by GIRLS!!!!! jk I couldn't find any to wear.

  • @Rynoto

    Same here! Wrist bells FTW!

  • Wow, the white ends of those mallets are an excellent visual tool! I wonder is someone could create a computer program where the ends of those mallets change colors based on how they are vibrating and how hard he is hitting the instrument (even more, if they could see the mood colors of the chords). This could allow people to visually see what he is doing with the expression in the music. Just some food for thought. Fabulous performance!

  • ...wha...?

  • i absolutely love this solo. great job man!

  • this is by far the best interpretation of this song i've heard. It sounds amazing. Good job :)

  • Hey Good Job! Nice job with the 6/8 section! THat was the hardest for me for some reason...here's a tip....i had the same problem...with the octave D's if it slips try opening your interval more....it helped me...Good Job!

  • im learning this right now. its so cool. i got the music for free too ;)

  • did you get it online somewhere? if you did care to share?

  • no i didnt get it online lol

  • this sounds so cool! im playing this for my recital!

  • man i seriously need the score of this song, could you send it to me dude ?

    .... answer me please :)

  • go to sheetmusic plus its only like 4 dollars.

  • i'll play this at my exam this semester

    wish me luck

  • i wish you luck! Heehee

  • Oh wow.. I could listen to this for hours on end!

  • and sorry but this is definitely not the best interpretation on youtube. but keep working at it!

  • heta

  • i think you need to get a metronome.

  • Ahhh raindance. One of the most overplayed solos, but not without reason. This was my first 4 mallet solo. I still want to hear it with the "optional wrist bells"

  • The wrist bells is what I wanna hear. I have heard this so many times without them.. I WANNA HEAR THOSE WRIST BELLS.

  • suck meh cockldoodledooooooo

  • This is the best interpretation of this piece on youtube in my opinion.

  • yeah, especially with the missed notes and jacked up rhythmic interpretation!!!

  • ¡¡fantástico!!

  • hey i have an audition for a school in like two weeks and would love to play this song. but the publisher wont be able to get it to me for another 2-3 weeks and i honestly just don't have that time i was wondering if it would be possible to send me some sort of a scanned version of the piece. i already have a copy on order so i have paid for it i jsut wont have it in time.

  • i have it on file, send me your email and ill get it to you

  • do you think you could send it to me too?

i kind of need a solo to play..

  • sorry, i cant seem to find the file or hard copy (probably deleted it/lent it out)

most music stores should have it,

  • what level is this solo? im looking for solo's for this years solo and ensemble and i really want to either play this one or marimba flamenca

  • This is a grade level 4 on a scale of 1-6.

  • yea i played this song at s&e and got a perfect score. then at state i only got a second. but i loved playing this song and i hope to perform it at my music camp next week if possible.

  • that was kind of strange.. you should do what iheartbradon says and it will be a lot better! make sure b4 you start playing a piece you analyze it and make sure you know exactly how to play the song. Then practice it!

  • 1. yes you used dynamics here and there. but the rolling section was boring

    2. you tempo changed ALOT

    3. i think you should check the music again, you played alot of parts wrong

    4. i do like the you expression throughout the piece.

i played this piece for state and a concerto contest.

i know it forwards and backwards.

i'll try my best to get a video up of it.

  • I love this piece so much. I'm in battery(marching percussion) at my school and our band director has made it so all in battery have to learn a mallet solo and vise versa. So I picked this one. I have the first 50seconds or so memorized, what seems to be the end of the part.

  • This is the solo that I'm going to start working on soon. The Yamaha sounds amazing!! I play on an Adams marimba. It's the only one that fits my height. lol

I just took Yellow After the Rain by Mitchell Peters to contest. I'm really excited to start working on this piece. You sound amazing!!

  • You're right about the Yamaha, it's a great marimba, I prefer it above adams tbh.. Also, you can adjust the height of a marimba.. =/

In my opinion, Rain dance is alot more enjoyable than yellow after the rain, have fun practicing ;)

  • i also played yellow after the rain and worked on rain dance afterwards.

you should check out my video on yellow after the rain and tell me what you think.

i'll post rain dance as soon as i can.

now im working on gitano :)

  • Same! I played Rain Dance after Yellow, and found Rain Dance much more fun to play. =) But I think it's also a lot more tiring. Maybe it's the way I hold the mallets? I use Stevens grip.

  • just fyi, NEVER play a solo with the snares on a nearby drum. if that happens in a contest room, your points drops, causing the overall score to lessen. other than that, it's pretty swell. Right now, i'm working on Dance by David Steinbeck.

  • Really good on hitting the right notes, but I'm noticing you're not playing the alternate right hand on the second line of the first page. It goes from quarter notes to eighth notes in the last few bars.

  • swell job! I'm working on this piece right now actually. Work on those wrong notes though. =)

  • You play pretty good, But work on your wrong notes. In bar 33 don't slow down. in bar 49 play stronger. It must sound "heavy"

In 6/8 you played verry well. In the rolling part. Watch out for wrong notes and tempo. Try to do more with the sound. !

    Keep training =)

  • hey good im in 7th and been working on for a year and from what i hear its pretty good keep working

  • nice, but on last bit of rolls stick 3(right hand inner stick) is a bit too soft

  • good technique

  • SOunding good! I just bought a copy of this, and I found your video to watch and read along, and you did a very nice job! If only I had a marimba to practice on...

  • need alot of work, but it was done alright

  • Yeah. Just down tempo abit on the rolls. It's a tad too fast. Making it go slower drags it out and it's much more dramatic.

  • Not bad. Marilyn Rife is my aunt.

  • en general esta bien pero no quieras tocar lo que te sabes rapido y lo q no lento q cortas el roolo a la cancion porque se nota que esa parte no la dominas

  • you really slowed down and had some wrong notes... but other than that good job(:

  • don't roll so fast in the slow roll section :S icky poopoo

  • actually just slowing down the roll speed on the softs would do justice. the loud and dramatic parts are fine with a quick roll speed

  • You are good! Step by step & luck!

  • interesting intrerpretation. could prolly use more left and in second translation of melody. i wouldnt play rubato until the slow section near the end. parts of this song were too fast. some dynamics, especially in the 6/8 time were missing. a few note errors as well. balance between the hands is rather poor.

  • wow this is a really long piece. ive got the first page and a half down. my teacher is telling me if im wrong or not. and i come here every day listning to this so i have a idea of what it sounds like in case i hear a wrong note. im pretty good at reading music since my mom put me in peano lesons since i was five. good thing theyre the same notes ^^

  • You're actually helping me learn this piece, I suck at reading music. I'm kind of like Nick Cannon in Drumline :P

  • some of the stuff he played isn't right. some rhythms are completely wrong. you should probably look up a recording on tapspace or something.

  • Oh wow. Thanks for the heads up!

  • I recommend watching the rain dance solo by axle210. It helped me a lot when I was still learning the solo too and now i have it perfect. but i can read notes, but it takes me a while to get the rhythms down with the notes.. it was my first 4 mallet solo. I hope it helps(:

  • Oh thanks :). Yeah I can read the notes, but yeah the rhythms on the 3rd page of music I cannot get down. Yeah it's my first 4 mallet solo but I played 4 mallets in marching band so it's not too bad :P. Thanks again!

  • I did this solo for our 8th grade solo contest last year, and I totally love it! You do really well! You should add wrist bells, it really adds to the piece. Great job!

  • love the 6/8 i've only played four mallets for about 9 months

  • i'm doing this solo this year too. really good :)

  • hey good job i too am doing rain dance come this february for solo and ensemble

  • i'm doing this solo this year. well played. gotta say that my favorite section is the 6/8.

  • good job

  • Well unless this is different from the original. The beginning isn't right. Still sounds good.

  • I checked it with my music, it's right. But then again Rife had something to do with that probably

  • Just started playing this song today, going to preform for WI solo and ensemble. I learned the first three lines and commited them to memorization while intrudicing myself to the remainder of the first page and the last page in the 45 minute period I had to work with. Great song, you did amazing!

  • nice !,

  • dude props to you. i wish i played that in 8th grade. probably could have but didn't have the time =(. I'm thinking about doing this one for solo this year

  • haha thanks. i have the whole solo down 3 months in advance. now i'm just working on finishing touches. you should do it. its awesome.

  • how old are u ?i play this song now...

  • awsome!!!

  • This solo is awesome! You did a wonderful job with it! I am also playing this solo for a solo and ensemble festival in February 2009 so seeing it played up close was very helpful for me. For just being in the 8th grade though, I am just hoping that I can get through it. Haha. Thanks for being so inspiring!

  • so many cool chords in the roll section... my favorite part!

  • Very nice job, indeed!

  • Thank you for posting.

  • Might you be open to considering another way to play (stick) the octave section? It might be helpful to others who might play the piece, as well...

  • i like this song. its a good solo. you play it very well. im am in the process of learining it. and since i cant real music very well, i watch videos and learn it. it sucks because no one records at a downward angle =). so keep up the good work

  • Two suggestions.

More dynamics. Lots more contrast. Rain Dance is neat, but musically a bit boring. You have to repeat quite a bit of stuff, so make it more interesting with dynamic contrast (and really make sure to nail the accents so they stand out).

Smooth out the tempo changes a bit. Other than that, sounded pretty good. (:

  • You're crazy. Dynamics are very good. same as contrast.

Please if you can do better,... be my guest.

    you did an awesome job!!!

  • Wow!! You play very good!

The sheetmusic has been delivered, so I am working hard to play as good as you. Maybe you have some tips. Greetings Luc (from Holland)

  • you're really good! how long have you been playig?

  • Sweet! I've heard this before, my Buddy Derek played this.

  • nice! im working on this solo for the beginning of 2009...the part where you play the same notes on each hand (:50) i just noticed that you changed tempo and/or slowed down a lot...but overall its great!

  • Great Job!!!

  • Awesome job, Gasper! It was nice playing with you this summer.

  • Tnx man :). It was nice playing with you to.

  • nice playin :)

  • very good

    couple missed notes but

    over all good
