thanks very much for posting this information I'm still learning a lot of ways to use my apple tv but I just recently bought the newer version for my family room and brought the older one to my bedroom and now all the extra media media is what I'm looking for, so hopefully I can get it all figured out cause I love using Itunes but I also love being able to have a choice.

i only noticed your chinese import oak/ash fake veneer wall unit and how the it's dental forms do not line up--except it's orange glow doesn't match anything - especially the fiber board cocktail table. then i noticed the faux rock fire place. the polypropylene berber carpet soils permanently. your taupe walls clash with the golden tiles. the partial leather/vinyl upholstery is hollow on the sides- just slap them...the picture above the t.v. is 2-3 inches too high, but why have a t.v. so low?

I just have to ask, one comment led me to believe after hacking you can't access you tube from your Apple TV? Just making sure as I'm seriously contemplating this. We are military oversees and have limited TV show access, iTunes certainly doesn't have it all. It would be nice to expand our library. Also, t I don't necessarily want to burn my DVD's to my external server yet. This Boxee would allow us to watch movies through it on the net correct? Thanks!

@lildeviljen I don't think Apple TV is the right fit for you, it wasn't a very popular product. There is a lot of speculation that Apple will come out with a new product called iTV. It's probably better to wait, something new and improved will hit the market very soon.

@lildeviljen Yes, you are able to watch movies on it as well... If you don't want to go thru all of the hassel of buying the apple tv, upgrading it to unlock it, simply get a computer and hook it to ur big screen tv. I have a laptop which is hooked to my tv in the living room. Anyways, download the Boxee software to ur pc and use it just like the one he's showing on this video. and you can also play dvd's using the boxee software (you can't if ur using the unlocked apple tv)

I just wasted $80 on this thing. None of the important stuff works: (1) flash does not work, which means no live internet video. ATVFlash's suggested workaround is only effective for users running OS X 10.4.x. or OLDER on their iMacs. (2) the iPhone controller app -- mobile airmouse -- does not function as a keyboard. You need another app for that. It's a very clunky solution. Not worth the money.

@aliengruvgod Thanks for your comments. I'm sure other viewers will benefit from your experience. This is definitely not for everybody, Apple has been very restrictive with Flash and I don't think many people realize that. It's unfortunate that you couldn't get Flash working with ATVFlash

@kohjul That's right. ATVFlash is good for watching video files of different types on your ATV. How you get them there is a problem ATVFlash leaves to the user. They recommend a 3rd party application called Cyber Duck.

But if you are interested in watching, say, live sports or even YouTube via the internet, forget about it.

Can you believe that Microsoft has actually outdone Apple in this department? Crazy. Get your sh*t together, Apple.

@kohjul Yes, it is very odd that right out of the box Apple TV is rigged to stream YouTube videos through its YouTube "app", and yet it cannot stream any video, including YouTube, directly from a website after unlocking it. ATVFlash allows you to stream video from sources like Hulu but as I said there is no streaming via web-browsing. So you have two choices: 1) stream videos from Hulu or Boxee or whatever or 2) transfer your own videos of varying formats to Apple TV (Eg. via Cyber Duck).

I downloaded evrything including boxee everything was working fine until I did some more downloads, I dont know where or what cause the problem but when I try to get in Boxee I get: Error: CANNOT LAUNCH XBMC/BOXEE FROM PATH, what did I do wrong what can i do to fix it please help

leadyj. Just wanted to reply. The truth is, once you get it set up, its easier to use than regular Apple TV b/c you spend most of your time in Boxee. The key is to get your USB storage set up which is very easy with the ATV flash. It makes getting media on the Apple TV very easy. Boxee's UI is really well laid out so, its a nice way to browse your movies, TV shows etc.

Having just gone through this process (ATV Flash, Boxee) I highly reccomend this video for taking the mystery out of unlocking ATV's potential. Here's a question, can you use a USB hub to get another port so you could use wireless mouse AND external USB storage?

I found is to be of value when looking a the ATV install and how it works. However a minor criticism was that you were focused highly on Boxee.

i think Boxee is cool but if you had focused more on the aTV Flash and how to use all the features that would have been wicked!
