What 1 has done in their life will be calculated & measured as a whole. Their good deeds or merits will reap the the necessary rewards in time but their bad deeds or demerits will return to them tenfold. Say that you have commited an act of kindness; you will the be repaid for it appropriately. Should you sin, especially against your fellow man, the consequences will be much more dire. as they say, what you sow you shall reap.

not exactly. these pilgrims enter into a trance-like state where they supposedly take a tour of the Taoist Hell; all 18 levels of it! Generally, this is a highly dangerous practice if not done by professionals because the soul leaves the body during this time & the possibility of one's soul getting lost or reincarnated into another body is very high (the current body simply slips into a coma, never to awaken)

generally, an individual's past lives is recorded & stored by the gods for their future use (kinda like a government buerocracy) the individual themselves are usually forbidden from accessing memories of their past lives as it is forbidden by the mandate of heaven set down by the jade emperor himself.
