Can someone provide a source for it being the "widely accepted practice" to name seas after the land to the west. That seems really random. It seems more likely that each sea is named individually based on it (modern) history and "discovery" by Europeans. For example, the Tasman sea is named after the first European to sail it. He was also the first European to visit Tasmania, which was also later named after him. I don't see that it had anything to do with west.

Similarly, the Sea of Okhotsk was named after the first Russian colony on the Pacific Coast. Kamchatka was even further out than this far-flung colony, and Russians knew very little about it, so of course they wouldn't name it for that. Again, I don't see where west comes into it.

Can someone provide a source for it being the "widely accepted practice" to name seas after the land to the west. That seems really random. It seems more likely that each sea is named individually based on it (modern) history and "discovery" by Europeans. For example, the Tasman sea is named after the first European to sail it. He was also the first European to visit Tasmania, which was also later named after him. I don't see that it had anything to do with west.

You're spreading lies about Sea of Japan. On the globe there are many bodies of water called "East Sea" by locals. Chinese and Vietnamese use "East Sea" to refer to East China Sea and South China Sea, respectively. "East Sea"'s also been used by Germans, Danes, Dutch, Swedish, Norwegians, and Finns to refer to the Baltic Sea. Neither UN or IHO has ever determined East Sea and Sea of Japan be used simultaneously. Sea of Japan has been the standard for the body of water between Japan and Korea!

most of countries name their border waters east to their side. Like gulf of california and gulf of mexico... but who gives a shit of the name of seas? 90 percent of global population doesn't know "sea of japan" or "east sea"..
