Before the harbour breakwall was built back in the 1930's there used to be a great break called "flood control". That was where the LA river let out. That was back in the redwood board days. There were other good "river entrance" breaks in the area such as Newport Harbour entrance, Ballona Creek and further south "Killer Dana" Point. They could get big too. Surfed up to 20'. All these breaks - once considered top spots are gone thanks to US Army Corps of Engineers.
That breakwall sucks! there is a string of nasty garbage not to far from the shorline floating just off the bottom because of it, and it has all kinds of gross crap in it. I saw diapers. Think of all those waves that could have been.
This was a large short period swell (11s - 12s). It was sneaking through the hole in the breakwall and also curving around the south breakwall. Pretty fun surf. Time to take the breakwall down?
Nicely done! LB breaks on a huge winter west and a huge south-the bigger the better! A giant south can push waves up to Cherry Ave. After a rain like this, the water is beyond FILTHY!!!
my dad always spoke this happening every once in a great while and how it was such a fun wave he even had pictures of double to triple head high sets rolling in. bitchin.
my bad, but I almost guarantee you that this was localized windswell, only south swells can make it past the breakwater with a small swell degree window
haha its cool mang. this was because of the series of storms we've been getting, so yeah, you could say it was localized windswell. south swells and west swells make it past the breakwater...both with small degrees. ugh. i from your vids you spend a lot of time up north...man, i've never surfed north of long beach ever!
I was lucky to make it out a little later in the afternoon. 10 years in the LB and finally got some waves in my backyard. SINK THE BREAKWALL!!!!!!!!!!!!
That's gross. Just because Long Beach has waves today doesn't mean you should get in them. It would be one thing if the breakwater was gone, but until then you're swimming in a sewer. ESPECIALLY during/after rain.

Plan a short trip to the Rehoboth Beach and bask in luxury at the Boardwalk Plaza Hotel, Delaware.

Really nice beach but I wouldn't go in it. I live like 10 minutes away from there. My favorite place to workout and take chicks for a long walk!
