I share your taste for Debra I've seen almost all her movies this one is one of my favorite si is Demetrius and The gladiators without forgetting The tiger of eschnapur
and his sequel der Indische Grabmal from F. Lang.
Debra was a beauty and a good dancer always a joy to watch thougk she never reach the stardom status that she would deserve
I saw this movie when I was a young girl, and I never forgot the movie, although I couldn't remember the name or who was in it. I started searching on the internet, and found the name and who was in it. I then started looking for a DVD, but couldn't find one in any of the stores. I found this site, and, oh my goodness! almost everything must have been marked indelibly in my memory. They all look familiar! Please bring it out on DVD!
Thank you very much for this share! An inspring film to say the very least, I first viewed it as a young boy on TV in the early 60's and it's been indelibly etched in my memory ever since. Thank you again!
Turner Classic Movies is running a whole bunch of Pacific Island movies tonight. Suddenly this movie came into my mind. I saw it on TV when I was very young. I just loved love stories in the movies, and was still very much under the spell of fairy tales and Catholic indoctrination. I was horrified by the Witch Doctor's pronouncement: "Sacrifice!" and Debra/Kahlua's willingness to jump into the volcano to save her people, her island, and didn't understand the underlying indigenous themes.
i saw this movie when i was 7 or 8 years old back in the 70's. I remember reenacting the final scene when she looks back and then jumps into the volcano. I reenacted it by jumping off my top bunk bed. I loved that movie can't find it anywhere not even on Netflix. I'll try Amazon!
A Broadway play in 1912, then performed by traveling theater companies throughout the USA (and other countries) till at least 1917; a black & white film in 1932 starring Delores Del Rio, and then this color version in 1951.
Thanks for uploading this beautiful video. I didn't like the ending. Debra Paget's character died. I like Debra Paget very much. I hope to find some of her movies. She's the most beautiful actress I ever seen on the movie screen.
Thank you for uploading this video!! My mother saw this movie when she was young. She's 74 years old, and still dances Hula!! One of her most favorite song to dance is "The Love Song of Kalua". I've played and sung this song so many times, but this is the first time I had the priviledge of seeing video clips of the movie that was my mom's most favorite song to dance the Hula!
I first saw this movie in 1977, it was on the old WTCG now WTBS. They always called these airings a Hallmark Holiday Special, usually during the Easter weekend or Christmas. And yes Debra Paget is one of the most beautiful women to ever grace the silver screen.
i think i just cried wen she jumped into the volcano and louis was calling her name darnnnn y did she have to jump? when there was an extremely handsome man who loved her soo much "sniffs"
I first saw her in "Broken Arrow" when I was a child. That pretty face stayed in my mind ever since. Never expect to see any of her movie again until now. Awesome! Thanks northbreed1
I to saw this film as a child about 5 or 6 years old. I have never forgotten the name nor that Jeff Chandler starred. The main scene I remember is the volcano and walking on fire. I thank those who put it on you tube. I am half Cook Islander and this would be one of the most moving South pacific movies of all time. Geoffrey
Touchingly done, with respect and reverence - as always northbreed1. Man, what a revelation! I must have seen this when I was very young and it must have gone in pretty deeply I guess because I always remembered parts of it. Later in life, though, I could never figure out whether it was one movie or several that I was remembering. It's all back now - vividly! Thanks.
I remember this lady as a fantasy love as a young boy. I believe it was on Saturday Night at the Movies. She captivated me before I knew what making love was all about. I still remember my fascination.
i am a hugh fan of debra paget. she is so lovely graceful and talented. this movie especially was wonderful. love me tender and broken arrow were two more of her best.
This is a classic film that deserves a quality DVD! A truly haunting film and completely unforgettable! Best volcano sequences ever in a movie, I think!
Thank you so much for posting clip of one of my BEST film ever. I'm tahitian and never forget it since my childhood. This film is printed in my mind for ever. Unforgettable Kalua. I sent my contribution for restoring this film to foxmovies. As you, i desperately search the french version of it. Thanks again for this clip
I have read about this movie, and have wanted to see it since my first time on Kaua'i. Now seeing this, I know I have seen it before as a young child ! I remember some of the scenes, and the wonderful music. Thanks so much for posting this. I will petiton for a restored DVD ! LOVE IT ! Mahalo Nui Loa !
The Bird of Paradise was one of the first movies I can remember seeing. The Love Dance of Kalua has haunted me all my life. The ending where Jeff Chandler was holding Louis Jourdan while tears streamed down his face was very touching to me as a child, and now as an adult. The sensuality of Debra Paget is in a class by itself. Sensual, but not nasty.
THANK YOU for composing such a thoughtful comment. It's the kind of feedback I especially enjoy reading, always hope for, and rarely receive. Consider your words bronzed, friend; I do.
Thanks for writing in. You might be able to find a mediocre-or-worse-quality "boot" of the film somewhere, but I encourage you instead to petition the studio (read my text description) for a restored-print release on an official DVD! THAT is your best bet.
I've never seen seen this version! It looks amazing!! Debra Paget was so great in these clips. This is now a must find movie for me. Is it on any format at all? VHS, Laserdisc, DVD?
"Bird of Paradise" with Debra Paget is one of the most memorable films I ever saw in my childhood. I was no older than 10 when I saw it at the cinema. I have never seen it shown anywhere else in all these years but have never forgotten it. Thank you so much for posting this.
