When and why did it change from Tobler to Terry's? I remember this commercial. Were they new to the US market then?
By the way, a company from Florida called Whetstone copied these. DAMN KNOCKOFFS! They got sued, along with Phar-Mor (out of business) and won! They even copied the name change (they are now called Florida Tropic). Today I noticed Trader Joe's makes a knockoff too...
From what I can tell, they rebranded it as Terry's in 2000, after the original English company that made them, later acquired by Kraft. My guess is, they decided to link it to a "prestige" brand they also owned, but later priorities changed and they decided they wanted a unified brand worldwide. (Example: Electrasol detergent became Finish because that's what it's called everywhere else.)
And yeah, I could swear I once saw a CO knockoff at Ross or some other discount place.
@VCRchivist Wasn't rebranded as Terry's as that was the name of the original company that made them (Terry's of York). They have always been sold as 'Terry's chocolate orange' in the vast majority of countries ever since they were launched.
All the 80's stores like Jo-Ann, Linens 'N Things and Phar-Mor had knockoffs. Christmas Tree Shops has Terry's though.
I vaguely remember the transition, when both Tobler and Terry's were on the shelves at CVS. The Tobler ones looked beat up! I kind of miss the colorful Tobler logo (they have the same basic logo though). Not sure if they had the peppermint ones as Tobler.
In England, It's always been Terry's as far as I know... and it came from here

In Canada it's always been Terry's as long as I can remember..
One of the most perfect things on earth is a Terry's Chocolate orange.
I've seen (and tasted) inferior imitations put out by various companies.. They are made of fail.
Nothing comes close to the original. Nothing.

@madabbafan I meant in the U.S. market ... the one this particular ad is from. Though I could have stated it better.
