As trees are injured the skin of the tree bark and underlying tissue tend to compartmentalize over the injured part. Very similar to the formation of a burl. Burls are most commonly caused by insects, and in an effort to protect themselves with develope the burl. The human body does the same thing by forming a cyst around a tumor or growth. The dead limb in your vid prevents the full formation to enclose the wound, and forms as shown in your video. Hop-Hormbeam are notoriuos doing the same.
@MrLeonard55 I'm not aware of commercial flash cards. However a better method is to make your own. Depending on what you want to learn. In school/college we made our own using photo books. Take sample of leaves and bark, and compress and allow to dry, then place between plastic and card-board of individual pages. Label as appropriate. Alternatively you can make a set of flash cards with 3 by 5 index cards. Put the common name on one side and the latin name or scientific name on the other.
@MrLeonard55 had to split this up into 2 parts. Make another set of cards with the common name on onside and a discription of the tree, leaves, bark, grow habbits, fruit and any other important fact to the tree. You can make another set with the common name of the tree on one side, and the similar trees either by family, or commonly mistake for other species. ie popular trees are othen mistaken for grey birch during winter months especial at a distance. Possibilites are endless.

Hi. Does anyone sell something like play cards to identify trees and species? Thanks for any help you can give me.
