Funny that those who pirate would not buy if they couldn't pirate - so the companies don't really "lose" anything they might have gained. This is just EVIL GREED at work.
Japan 's policy is no different - no matter how much some of you love the country they are WRONG.
I have to admit that after I became a music producer, I am for copyrights. I spend 300 dollars a day per person for a horn section, 500 dollars for a great drummer, as well as every other musician on the project (union). The tape costs 300 dollars. Mastering fees=500 dollars. Promotion costs are big. Housing of the musicians for the project cost money. The fact is: there will not be any musicians left anymore like Zappa said. Wake up people. It costs around 5000 bucks to produce a GREAT song.
Long as you don't sign with a major label, your career should be fine. Honestly, you should know better. Too many artists have spoken out about the industry and it's exploitation of artists for you to honestly believe that, what amounts to free advertising, is doing any actual harm to you and your group.
Artists more successful than you get by on free sharing their music. Perhaps you should take a hint.
@Mathenaut What you are going to see them is less music, less horn sections, less strings, less real musicians if everyone thought like you. The VERY reason the Frank Zappa orchestra pieces exist is becasue Frank took the money the FANS paid and went without just to spend it to make a recording. I hopes he could sell it and just break even. The bottom line is, I paid for the musicians, i paid for the horns, i paid for stirngs, i apid for songwriters. so I OWN it.
No. The only thing we'd see less of are musicians that make music to 'get rich' as opposed to creating something they want the world to hear. Piracy has been prevalent and thriving for the last generation, and we've seen nothing but growth in the industry and ever-more successful artists. Again, you'll need more than inane rhetoric to stand against that fact.
Intellectual property isn't property. I don't care how much you spent, if someone else outclasses you, then tough.
Stealing implies that I'm taking something form you. Making a copy does not deprive you of anything. You are not entitled to people's money because you made something.
Intangible goods are not property. Nobody can steal your thoughts.
It's funny because it's true. Your case is based upon bad assumptions and a fallacy of assuming deadweight loss is entitled profit. You can't actually establish actual harm done and you can't account for the correlation of piracy and growth.
Good luck in your future, though. Maybe you'll make someone people are willing to pay for.
geek your looking in the wrong place, append "axxo" to your serach for movie torrents to get a good quality .avi I thought you were a geek? every geek worth his wait in 100101101 knows this!
So if I download movies, Samara from The Ring will come get me? That's a pretty convincing reason.

This at least SEEMS more effective than the American "don't download or we'll put in jail for 70 years) campaign.
Propaganda nonetheless, though. Gotta love melodrama!
