  • very interesting thanks

  • Do you have a link to the full version of this dicussion? Also is that Steven Pinker I see next to Brain Greene?

  • Science Methodology > Science Education

"One had to cram all this stuff into one's mind for the examinations, whether one liked it or not. This coercion had such a deterring effect on me that, after I had passed the final examination, I found the consideration of any scientific problems distasteful to me for an entire year."

Maybe for the kids who won't become Scientists we should change the syllabus, forget the details, just help them grasp the awe and wonder.

  • GO SCIENCE!!!

  • This is absolutely true. One has to be able to relate to the student, that's the key. If student's don't know why they are busting their butts over equations they will create a mental block and lose interest.

I read Greene's "Icarus at the edge of time" to my daughter and she loved it. I quickly realized that the relationship between space/time interested her so I explained it to her. Once the fascination forms, one can nurture it and help it grow. If not, it's just useless equations to them.

  • Science should be taught as a way of thinking and not just the facts. Afterdoing a few college level science classes you lose interest.

  • Totally agree...Biology and Chemistry in my highschool was torture.
