The Road Car has a 4.4 Liter supercharged V8... In the Sesson 2011 ALpina changed it to the S62B44 Engine from the the E39 M5 . But it's tuned to 530 hp
Turbo chargers produce more heat than superchargers. Also, the centrifugal superchargers produce no heat, and have self maintained cooling, which means you get all the power you need and no bullshit. rather or not this BMW has one, I don't really know, but being a race car, it most likely does. Turbo's are used because of their high end use, superchargers gives you better low and mid range, which is used MORE when circuit/hill racing. With a turbo, you need a misfire setup to get proper use.
But the thing is with SC's, you use power to make power, wouldn't that parisitic loss of power be detrimental for race car, which basically needs to make as much HP as possible, especially if it has restrictors on the intake. Thing there is the Belt for the SC, which would or could snap in a enduro race. It doesn't seem to me that this Alpina would eat the M3 ALMS race for dinner. But, it reminds of the proposed M6 race car that was aborted.
parasitic drain isn't really THAT big, maybe 20-40hp, but you also have to remember that its a BMW, they come stock with some nice horsepower and being a v6 it can get some nice power out of supercharger. also, the belts wont snap, if they did, our power steering and AC would snap as well, they last a good 60k miles if not more depending on what the belt is rated for, so its good to go. super charger is better because you get more low end which is needed when you slow down for corners.
Lots of racecars and Formula1 cars use Spur cut gears. Mesh gears (or w/e u wanna call them) are used in our general cars because they are quieter, Thats about it. Mesh gears do produce thrust though, so they would probably wear out prematurely in racing application.
last time i checked, the enzo's gearbox was a double clutch. if i'm right (maybe not but i'll explain anyways), then the enzo's gearbox does not disengage the clutch, shift and reengage. it simply engages one clutch while it disengages another. because 1st, 3rd and 5th are all connected to one clutch... and R, 2nd, 4th and 6th are hooked up to the other one. you need just to let go of one and clasp the next to shift gears.
it's counter intuitive that you have to use clutch when down shifting and not on the oposite event. but it really does have a reason: when you shift up using paddle shifters in a crash box, two things happen; the ECU cuts the throttle for a breaf moment, instantaneously eliminating load on the gears; and the hydraulic lever actuates the shift. it needs not using clutch because there's spare space for the selector teah to engage. downshifting on the other hand: (need extra space...)
ok so as i was saying: downshifting on the other hand demands that you use a clutch. because, unlike the engine, you can't really cut the torque the wheels are transmiting to the gearbox through the drivetrain. so if you don't use a clutch, the dog selectors cannot engage smoothly and you get that ((KKRRRR!!!)) that damages the gearbox. also, if they did engage, the fast over-revving of the engine would stress them uneccesarily. so we use a clutch to downshift on crash boxes.
it sounds like a bloody rocket is about to take off xD. after listening to that car you can tell it is defiantly a super charge because of that high pitched hiss as the air rushes in in.
@youlance29 Mate out of all the tens of millions of people commenting on youtube videos. You without doubt have to be the most boring, you have never to my knowledge posted anything either informative, or funny, or even slightly amusing, you are either very backward, or you just like annoying everyone so you can attract some attention to yourself because you have no friends or social life...either way I actually feel sorry for you. Good luck to you
yeah i know no modern car in general. but especially not race cars. and he said "straight cut" gears. and that means spurs. and we all know that spurs are very noise and can't handle much torque. thats why we use helical gears. also, the noise is NOT from the dog gears as some have said, even though this is a crash box. the noise is a mix of the supercharger pitch, the synchro's (it needs synchros, crash or not) and yeah, the helical gears sound too, just not as much as spurs.
dang man look how low that car is, and i bet that race car got a super stiff suspension, coz when it breaks it doesnt even transfer weight to the front. =]
well if it is supercharged, which it seems it is now that youve mentioned that little bit that i didnt notice, its pretty damn quiet. maybe its just droned out by the transmission. do you know what kind of supercharger it has? im thinking its a centrifugal supercharger of some sort

@reconn08 yea it is the whine of the straight cut gears...... since many race cars dont ure helical gears

thats not the tranny, that screaming you are hearing is the supercharger

@dewski1022
The whining noise IS the gearbox, it makes the noise because it has straight cut gears.

I wonder how the the car deal with the heat, one of the main reasons why superchargers are not used in enduro racing is due to overheating...

all u need is that flappy padle gearbox bu ferrari. Engages cl changes gear and disengages cl in less than 2/10 of a sec

you can do more with a clutch - thats why race cars normally have a manually operated clutch.

ofcourse u have to clutch while downshifting. the only time u dont use clutch is when ur going into neutral
