  • The real bass version is different to this one, this is the Alto part.

  • Those runs are so mushy -- the ones at the end were awful. This guy has very little facility and terrible breath control. I'm sorry, but if you can't do those runs with precision, forget it. And that attempted embellishment at 3:21-3:24 was just plain amateurish.

  • have you tried singing it?

  • I'm a tenor. Anyway, does not having sung, or not having tried to sing, the piece invalidate my critique? I'm sorry if you were offended by my comments, but that's the risk we take as artists. By the way, sincere congrats on your weight loss.

  • yeah, but this is youtube.

i just don't think nats type

    are appropriate. in this forum.

so that does invalidate some of the

critique. i'm not offended, just bothered.

  • I just sang this with a local orchestra this afternoon. I hear what you are saying about this singer... But the breathing is certainly the challenge with this aria. What a bear of an aria it is... I haven't been singing a lot lately, & actually found myself lacking breath at the end too.. It's a tough sing.

  • the piece is for an altro?? ... and the harpsichord is so *** ...

  • it's a piece for a Bass actually. Mezzos sing it sometimes, but Handel wrote it for a Bass.

  • Handel's Messiah has an interesting performance history. Basses and mezzos sang both under Handel's direction and both sing them today.

  • @musiqmarquis This specific aria was written for the alto castrato Guadagni. The original aria that was written for bass is hardly ever performed and is not the version currently being sung in this video.

  • was the conductor too lazy to stand?

  • in fact, he was not too lazy. he had new knees!

  • awesome! =)

  • jmbernard86 - If you see David, relay my greetings from Penn Yan, NY! Tell him we'd enjoy having him back!

I was the audio man and a bass in the Penn Yan Community Chorus when he did a superb performance of Ralph Vaughan Williams' "Five Mystical Songs".

    What a treat it was!

  • OH MY GOD!!! IM SORRY!!!

  • Good!!! But you are not a bass.....you are a short tenor....

  • Awesome job David! Your work is making Bethany shine!
