I'm doing *something*, not sure I'd call it playing yet by any means :) I only picked up a bass for the first time in Jan & the gig was Jan 13. Had to learn a whole set in days. Well, not so much learn I guess as write. And, well, not so much as write write but rather experiment, memorize bits+improv the rest. I think a bass adds to the song+easier to hear/feel it live. Listening again I hear I did a tiny random riff after the song that I didn't recall even doing. I put more info in the About...
