  • just ordered the mino flip 8gig today...Thanks Mr Felty!

  • This totally helped me out. Thanks

  • @wolframixx Thanks for watching and glad it helped.

  • Thanks. Great video helped a lot!

  • anyone?

  • I want to get that cable for recording my flights but i don't know which tu bout, can you send me the link, because in aircraft spruce the have the PATCHCORD COCKPIT VOICE RECORDER and the AIRCRAFT INTERCOM RECORDING CABLE, which one i should get i have the same headset you have..... thank you and congratulations for all your videos, they are great!

  • what's the first mount's name that you're using?

  • @HeathrowSpottingHD It's called The Cleat and they have them at FilmTools.

  • @rdfelty Alright cheers

  • For the front facing camera I been using use a "monsterpod" sitting on top of the instrument panel with good results, but I have not been able to record the intercom audio, thanks for the video. How do you integrate audio and video?

  • @aguiluch01 I use a patch cable to record the intercom separately, then combine them in editing. I use Final Cut to do the editing.

  • Hey Rick, Where can you purchase an aviation patch cable for audio? THanks

  • @freetofly10 You can get one online at Aircraft Spruce. Does that help? If I already answered this before, I'm sorry. The YouTube comments area can be confusing.

  • Also the name of the suction cup mount?

  • Do you know the exact name of the patch and the audio recorder? By the way, i think your videos are awsome! Keep em coming!

  • I did your exact procedure to record audio, except instead of using a seperate audio recorder, I'm using my canon dslr to capture both audio and video. The audio has a VERY fuzzy sound though, any ideas?

  • @Niggaaintnogangsta Not sure. I would try to record anything cleanly on your DSLR to make sure that mini connector port is OK. Then I would borrow some other recorder and try it in the plane with your cable. If both tests are good, then there is something in the panel or the plane connector port making the sound fuzzy.

  • Hello Rick ! Do you know where american or european website i can get one of those aviation audio pach caple like yours ?

  • You should use the gopro hero and a fixed wing Video Recorder Adapter... you wouldn't have to sync video and audio

  • @chittychad18 Now I use several Panasonic cameras. Not a big fan of the GoPro because of how it makes the propeller look. But it is nice for small mounting situations and if you don't care about prop artifacts. Also I sync video and audio so I can add engine noise with the coms and mix to the correct levels. So I end up syncing 2 channels of stereo audio and 3 cameras.

  • I think I figured it out. what's the name of the patch cord you use?

  • @chittychad18 I think you can now get one at aircraft spruce.

  • so if i use that splitter cable and plug it into a gopro and to my headset, i will be able to record audio and video with atc and engine noise?

  • How do you sync up the sound with the video?

  • I really like your video thanks for the information...fly high, fly safe

  • @airnavig8er Thanks for writing. Have fun flying!

  • @rdfelty How do you sync the audio and video together perfectly? love the vids! please respond quick if you can! I start flying may 9th

  • I really love your videos! I have the basic adapter cable going into a Canon Mini-DV camcorder but hope to upgrade to a Canon HD flash...they are one of very few brands with an external mic minijack! What software are you using to post-process your videos? I have Pinnacle Pro and Ulead. Like one of the earlier commenters, I get a lot of engine whine in my audio. Would an external digital recorder help?

  • thanks, any ideas or suggestions for mounting an external aircraft cam? i fly a piper warrior (low wing) and wondered if something could be mounted underneath ? thanks Jeff N8129D

  • @JY8949 I actually have never played with external mounts although I know the video is very dramatic. I worry about the safety issues and potential damage to the plane. But I know many people use the GoPro system of cameras with suction mounts. Let me know if you hook one up.

  • Hey, Great Work... Just one question, where exactly can we get that splitter cable to record com audio?

  • @mikegrossman Did I ever answer your splitter cable question?

  • @rdfelty nope...

  • @rdfelty nope...

  • @mikegrossman here's the website i found: w w w chiefaircraft c o m on the Part number search on top right type PC CVR. It's the very first option. Once you go to the next page, is the one that cost $32.50

  • very nice work ! but depending on your recording, you may have 3 video tracks and probably 2 audio tracks(one for ambient noise and one via the digital recorder). if you put together a 10 minute youtube video, how much time do you spend in post production getting things all polished???? i'd bet a good chunk of time, your videos look quite professional. what software do you use for putting it all together ?

  • @curiousman1971 No sure if I answered your note yet or not. You are correct, there are 3 video tracks and two audio tracks. It can take me several hours to get the flight videos out of the cameras and then several more hours to edit one landing sequence. Then there is the rendering of an output file and uploading, each which can take an hour or so depending on processing power and connection speed. I love it, but it is time consuming.

  • Hi again! Im getting ready to start recording. Questions:

    1) Will the audio from co-pilot & passengers also be recorded using this method?

    2) Do you know if the iPhone 4 would record the audio if I plugged the mini end into it?

  • @Kaliber35 Also, I cant find this patch cable...

  • Will gopros work good with recording? what with the flash thing? will it affect anything? do i need flash in gopros? do they have it?

  • @S9297AircraftReviews GoPros will work well for recording flights. They have no monitor so you can't see the shot until later. Not sure what you mean by the flash thing. Can you explain, perhaps I'm missing something.

  • @rdfelty You said something in the video that you liked your camera because of the Flash- unlike some other cameras. But behind that if you still dont understand thats ok- mainly wanting to know about if they would work-

    Thanks for info!

    OLAN

  • @S9297AircraftReviews Thanks for reminding me. The flash I mentioned is flash memory. GoPro has flash memory which is what you want. There are no moving parts as in a hard drive, so vibration won't affect flash memory recording.

  • I am starting to record my father's flights, we have cameras and suction mounts on order, and i have already tried out the digital voice recorder. My question is, when i record via the recorder, i get a loud humming noise and distorted audio, i am thinking this is because of amplified audio going into a reciever looking for non-amplified audio. Any idea on how to fix this?

  • @dragonfryer What cable are you using to connect the plane's audio panel to the recorder?

  • @rdfelty I am using a male to male miniplug, and a female miniplug to male intercom adaptor, and then plugging it into the rear seat of a Cessna 182 Skylane, headphone jack, not microphone.

  • enjoyed this :-)

  • @sheffair1 Thanks for watching. Let me know if you have any more questions.

  • @rdfelty Where can i find that Aviation Audio Patch Cable? Haha im only a 14 year old student in a C152 and thats just what i need to capture audio!

  • This is great. I was thinking about messaging you about audio recording and then discovered this video. I plan to record some of my flights. Cheers!

  • @Kaliber35 Glad you found it. I should really shoot another one, but this is still pretty much what I do.

  • This Video Is Great ! And i Wonder How You Record Those your Flight Videos and How You Get That Airplane-Radio Voice in Your Videos ! And This Video Help Me A Lot !!!!!! :)

  • @eemuska Glad the video helped. Let me know if you have any other questions. I learn something new every time I fly and record a video.

  • Great videos! I notice in your videos that you're getting ambient engine noise and maybe some wind with the COM audio, which is neat because it completes the audio. Does the audio recorder pick that stuff up through the headset mic, or do you have another microphone in the plane somewhere?

  • @threepete999 I have a video called "Recording My Videos" which might answer most of your questions. But in short, I record the COMs on a digital recorder, the video cameras pickup cockpit audio and I mix them all in an editing timeline. The whole process takes a while but I love doing it. Let me know if I can help you with any other questions.

  • @rdfelty Hi there. Great videos. Allow me to ask you what software you use to edit your videos?

  • Thanks for the tips, I am currently using a contour helmet cam mounted to my headset, it works pretty good but am going to add another cam to record my flight training and be posting later on.

  • @driller189 Great video. I just subscribed! Love the headset cam.

  • Thank's for the amazing tips men ;-)

  • @Alix75011 You're welcome. Thanks for watching.

  • Hi Rick, its me, @flyvacation. Thanks to the link to this video! I'd love to try doing some videos from my SR22, but wow, what a lot of work. Instead, I think I'll just watch all of yours :^)

  • Excellent video! I will try some of these suggestions!

  • Hey there,

Very nice video, but I fly a C-150 and there's no head rest for the second camera mount. Is there any other suggestions for camera mount?

Also I use the same mp3 recorder but mine is a ICD-PX720 and I was wondering if you put the sensibility on Low to record audio? Thank you

  • @Nicshooter I got a gorilla grip mount, it has three bendable legs so you can just put it straight on the back of the right seat. hope this solves your prob.

  • Great ..... really great!! Thank you!

  • You're welcome. Thanks for watching.

  • That's Beast =)

  • Those are awsome! I'll have to get me some of those for when i'm flying solo/PIC !

  • Thanks for showing how you do it!

  • You're very welcome. Happy to help.

  • Sk8rguy178 No, the Flip doesn't have a mini input, or any line in for that matter. That's why I use another recorder for audio. When I get back to a computer later today, I'll send you more info including the headset audio cable info.

  • where can i get the camera suction mount?

  • Very good!! I made the audio patch cord that you demonstrated and often get inquiries about the hook up of the cameras. I will simple advise them to watch your video! Well Done

  • Thanks for your comments. If you or others have any other questions, send them my way.

  • does the mino hd have a mini port im thinkin of purchasing one the i would also like to hook up the audio directly to the camera.

  • oh yeah, where did you get you cord for audio, ive tried sportys but had no luck

  • @sk8rguy178 One ansewer, radio shack they carry it, just bought it today!

  • Very good video thank you! Are you using the Sony CX100 for the headshot as well? I might have to buy one!

  • Yes, the Sony CX is the one I used to shoot my intro. It's an amazing camera for the price and size.

  • Very helpful and easy to understand video. Thnaks!

  • coma13794 - You're right, it is possible to record our flights with just the basics. Is it possible for you to describe how you place your tripod?

  • In the 172, I put the tripod behind the copilot seat, two feet on the floor, the third is angled straight back into the back of the passenger seat. The camera sits just above and behind the co-pilot headrest. I used to use a remote to start/stop the video with that config.

For the Lancair (2 seater), I put the front two legs in the copilot seat, and the rear leg straight back (shortened) to rest on the cargo bench. I raise the neck of the tripod so that the cam is almost touching the canopy.

  • sensational video, beautifully put together! My rig is a little different, just a single minDV camera, tripod, and attenuating dubbing cable. Less gear, certainly less flexible than what you have, but I only mention it to let ppl know that you can capture the video and audio with a cheap tripod, a $5 radio shack cable, and any camcorder with mic-in. :)

I love that suction mount! I will consider it for my airplane. I'm thinking the clamp won't work for me, though.

  • Thanks so much for this video! Great help

  • Very informative. I'm glad you posted this as alot of people ask the questions of how to record the audio. I was using a camcorder with an audio in jack to record my flight, but got rid of it....so I'm going to have to invest in an audio recorder (I'm now only using a panasonic digital camera's hd video recording feature). Clean C-172 you are in there!

  • rdfelty,

Thank you for posting this. Great insight to your set up. One day maybe I'll look into doing something like this! Excellent editing, as well.

    Take care,

    4PD

  • XaircraftX and N44949 I can only say that you should talk with your CFI. I didn't begin recording my flights until after my cross countries since I really felt there was so much to focus on already without worrying about recording things. I kinda wish I had some early flights recorded, but it's probably best that I don't. In terms of the solo, it isn't always clear when solo day will be, so it might be hard to plan ahead. But always ask your CFI about anything related to your flying.

  • do instructors let you mount a camera in the plane for a first solo? because im soon going to solo and i want to record it.

    thanks.

  • Beechsundowner - I agree on all counts, using a patch cable is a clean arrangement and with a camera you need to arrange everything so that it's out of the way and you can set it and forget it. Flying the plane including situational awareness is primary.

  • wats the average cost to get my private pilot liecences at norwood?

  • x34celtics34x, there are two flight schools at Norwood Airport. I fly with Horizon aviation and rdfelty flew with Norwood Flight Center to get his PPL. I'm not sure about the exact cost of NFC, but Horizon runs about $220/ lesson. Which is about an 1.5hr lesson. Total cost is hard to determine when different factors come into play.

  • Nicely done. I use the exact same audio, only reason I won't go to a second camera myself is like you said, flying the plane is primary for single pilot operations.. That needs to be continually emphasized by all of us who video our flights.

If I have a passenger, I delegate the second camera to him in my videos, briefing him what I hope he can do before wheels go up.

I like our setup better as compared to using mic in for a camera as it's much easier to edit out the unwanted audio.
