The Rose was originally called Pearl.....her estate stepped in and legally blocked it...they went back and re-filmed every scene where Pearl was used and re-filmed it to say Rose.....and there we went
This songs has affected a lot of Bette fans. It's one of the slightly off the radar songs that mostly big fans know (similar to "Home" or "The Boss" for Diana Ross fans). I'm fascinated by it. She does so many cries and riffs. It's so dramatic. Her most operatic song. It reminds me of "My Man's Gone Now" from "Porgy and Bess" or "Un Bel Di" from "Madame Butterfly". It evokes a lot emotion for me.
when i met bette i told her that when she sang this song in the rose i said it gave me chills and that scene is the best scene i have ever seen in a movie...
Janis only performed it live, never a studio recording so far as I can find. It's from a 1969 Winterland concert. Lorraine Elison did it originally. It's written/arranged by the same people who wrote "Cry Baby" which Janis made famous.
@delagosis THAT IS CORRECT, AS I HAVE HEART IT TOO, NO WHERE NEAR AS GOOD AS BETTE, SHE IS THE ONLY ONE FOR THIS SONG, HOWEVER JANIS JUST SHOUTED HER WAY THROUGH IT, LOL

The saxaphone in the beginning and the piano sort of take away from her voice. The music should complement her not challenge her.
