  • Do you remember when the sky tower at Carowinds was sponsored by Eastern and they played this music on it. I miss that!

  • Gotta love the ole' Lockheed L10ll whisperliners!

  • @thetitanicisdead lol I didnt know they were called whisperliners - 26 year resident of WInthrop Ma (next to Logan International) and hearing those engines rev up for take off was like no other plane. I recall Eastern had one of the largest terminals at Logan.

  • My dad used to work for them! As an aircraft mechanic.

  • Once you Fly with them you became loyal. Miss Eastern Airlines.

  • I remember the "Smiling faces, Going places on Eastern Airlines" song.

  • I loved Eastern, it was the #1 class airline! I started flying it in 1970, and chose it over any other anytime I flew it's route!

  • I always flew Eastern over Delta when I lived in Atlanta in the 80s. I loved their L-1011s! Fly Eastern! Now its either American or United for me.

  • @Pi7473000 Delta? Pfffft that is not an airline! We RULED the skies...lol

  • I loved Eastern Airlines. The Eastern Shuttle from NY to DC was the best value ever! $150 round trip AND you could pay with cash at the counter. None of that 14-Day advance purchase. If you were under 18, it was even better. $35 each way!

  • I flew an Eastern Boeing 727 from Philadelphia to Savannah going to Marine Corps Boot Camp in February, 1987!

  • Loved the 757 - so sharp - first one put in service on Christmas Eve 1982!

  • Since eal is defunct, why don't they tell us what they knew about the "Ghosts" from flight 401?

  • I remember the "Fly Eastern" music as sung by Astrud Gilberto in its commercials back in the 1960's....beautiful! What memories! I'm retired from Continental Airlines; however, I lived in Atlanta for most of my life (boy, do I miss Georgia!!) and flew Eastern (and Delta) very frequently to commute for my flights out of Los Angeles and Denver and later, New York, for many years. Thanks for sharing your tribute video to a great airline, Eastern -- truly Number One to the Sun!

  • " Eastern, The Wings of Man" That sounds so intensly 70's. I remember the first time I ever flew on an airplane. It was with Eastern Airlines in Nov 1977. My older sisters were taking me to Orlando for holiday. That was when the flight attendants used to give out the little plastic airline wing pins to the kids. We had a stopover in Atlanta and instead of disembarking to the airport terminal, all the passengers were put on this big people mover that tranfered everone to the connecting flight.

  • Boy I miss Eastern. I'm 33,grew up in Boston and my mom always flew with them. I'm now 33 and ironically work for Continental. I can only say or ask....how is Frank Lorenzo not rotting in prison somewhere ? I just read GROUNDED and hate him with a PASSION now. I hear he still flies or has flight priviledges with CO,but refuses to eat or drink anything served to him. That guy ruined alot some great airlines New York Air, PeopleExpress damn near CO from what I understand with the old timers here.

  • I spent weeks in training to be a EA cabin crew member and when i was finally assigned to NYC i worked for two weeks and was furloughed. So I went to a open house at Pan Am and they hired me right there. I just had to agree not to return to eastern if called back. i hated the combo of olive green and red for the uniform colors.

  • I flew eastern airlines for many years., I grew up on that airline. What shame that they have gone bankcrupt along with Pam Am. Those two airliners were the world 's more famous airliners in the world.

  • why do i think the last shot was taken at jfk?

  • My mom's first airplane flight was on Easrtern in 1947. She received a flight plan from the pilot and she also kept the ticket and full color brochure. I own them now. It's a great piece of history.

  • i loved the whisperliners

  • BRING EASTERN AIRLINES BACK! I promise you that it will be game over for the rest of the industry if Eastern makes a comeback.

  • Astrud Gilberto did the jingle.

Didn't Eastern merge with some other airline?

  • No! But there where some rumors that some business man wants to by its Logo and Name to create a new airline.

  • @raymonsoco He would best save his money as the economy has gone to shit.

  • @raymonsoco It was so much fun, but we are ALL 20 years older, soooo that would rule us out!!! Our kids could possibly work there...lol

  • We used to get on the Eastern shuttle from Boston to New York in the 1970's. No ticket, just get aboard! They ticketed in the air first, then the drink cart came down. before you had one sip of your drink, you were landing at JFK!!

  • @viarro22

Eastern was raided by Corporate Raider Frank Lorenzo in 1986. He forced a sale of Eastern to his Texas Air Corporation, who also owned Continental Airlines that he raided in 1982. He stripped Eastern (a Union airline) and moved Eastern's assets to Continental (a Non Union Airline) building up Continental at Eastern's expense. He put Eastern in Bankruptcy, and liquidated it through the Bankruptcy Court. He flushed Eastern down the toilet and 60,000 jobs with it.

  • EA will be my #1 airline forever. I got an immediate crush on the when I first flew from JFK to MIA on an EA 727-200. Many flights followed. They made the L-1011 and the 727 my favorite airplanes. So sad they are gone :-((

  • Wasn't eastern the first airline to have a shuttle service ? Maybe, now is the right time for an Eastern resurrection.

  • @Dakers11 Eastern Airlines started the Shuttle service between Boston-New York-and Washington, D.C. When Lorenzo began stripping Eastern and selling off assets, he sold 1/2 of the shuttle to Donald Trump, and 1/2 to Pan Am. Donald Trump took one 727 and made it his corporate jet, then sold off his 1/2 of the shuttle to USAir for a profit. Pan Am went Bankrupt and Delta bought Pan Am's 1/2 of the shuttle. So, put the USAir and Delta shuttle together, and you've got the Eastern Shuttle.

  • Wow the days of being a Flight Attendant for Eastern Airlines I was based in NY 1985-88 then on to Atl till 88. Loved the days of classy service from our pilots and f/a's we were the #1 carrier for many yrs. The days of first class service is long gone on any flight I am on. This photos bring back many memories of planes I loved the DC10, 757 and even the huge L1011. Just a 48 yr old mom reflecting back on her glory days.

  • Airplanes I saw here in sequence, 757,L1011,A300,L1011,A300,SAAB340,727,757,L1011,DC8-62,L1011,747-100,757,727,757,L-ELECTRA,A300,727, did I pass the test ?

  • was that Astrud Gilberto singing that?

  • Yes !!!

  • Frank Lorenzo trashed a damn good airline

  • Charlie

  • @furiocity202 I agree with you. I grew up in that airlines, and my goal when i got out of college to work for eastern. Very sad to see that finest airline dead. Bad mangement and he eliminate competition.

  • Woops! 1st airline I ever flew on. November, 1979 - from NYC's Laguardia to Ft. Lauderdale -- thanks for this tribute! Brings back all the fond memories.

  • 1st

  • i miss those silver l-1011 on approach to miami cutting through beautiful cum clouds a the sun reflecting off there skin

  • It's really sad what a union can do to a company

  • @firemanbart

The three unions at Eastern did all they could to try and save Eastern from Frank Borman and his ineptness as President and CEO. Eastern was being run into the ground. Read "Frank Lorenzo and the Destruction of Eastern Airlines". This book was written by Aaron Bernstein, editor of Business Week Magazine. He goes into great detail how the Unions tried desperately to save Eastern and how Lorenzo's only plan for the Airline was to destroy it to build up Continental.

  • @jhowej3

you need to do the research the pilots union wanted him out running the company so they went out on strike. the union killed eastern trying to get a new ceo,

  • @firemanbart

You need to do your research, my friend. ALPA and the TWU went out on strike in support of the Machinist Union. All Three Unions walked at the same time. It wasn't a Pilots Strike... It was a Pilots sympathy strike in support of the Machinist Union. The Machinist were offered a contract with a 68% cut in pay and benefits. The Pilots contract was up next and they knew they were all on the chopping block too. Everyone wanted Borman out, even some of the Non-Contract Emp. too

  • @firemanbart

The Unions didn't kill Eastern Lorenzo did. Read the book "Grounded, Eastern Airlines and the Destruction of Eastern Airlines. And, by the way, I lived it. I worked at Eastern for 18 years. I KNOW what happened there. I lived it.

  • @jhowej3

once again it takes two to dance does it not? the company either wanting to take or give nothing. The union on the other side wanting wanting and wanting some more. And if i remember the union wanted alot not sure if eastern could afford it or not.

  • @firemanbart

    Americans costs per seat mile was $.07, United's $.05, Delta's $.06, TWA's $.07,

When Borman took over Eastern's was $.07., when the Airline was sold to Lorenzo, it was $.057. Every other Airlines was below $.09. Now do you call that good management. It wasn't from Union costs. We were taking 18% pay cuts at the time. After 10 years of paycuts and givebacks, how much more can you give before you say enough? All we wanted was for Borman to quit spending and blowing $.

  • @jhowej3 Thank government deregulation and the "beauty" of the free market.

    America screwed itself.

  • @firemanbart

One more thing firemanbart.... what makes you such an authority on the Eastern Strike? Where did you get your information? You tell me to do research, but your statement of what happened at Eastern is 100% wrong. The Pilots were on a sympathy strike (like the TWU Flight Attendants) for the Machinist. So where did your non factual 100% wrong facts come from? Tell me. What makes you an authority on the strike and what happened leading up to the strike at Eastern? Tell me.

  • @jhowej3

go read and see what main two unions are credited with killing eastern and get back with me. they did do a sympathy strike i will give ya that. The union that firsted walked out on strike did not kill eastern

  • @firemanbart

Your comment makes no sense. The Union that first walked out on strike did not kill Eastern. You're right, none of the Unions or Non Union employees killed Eastern, it was Mis-Management from Borman and the Board of Directors. I will give you an expample. People Express was buying used 727/200's for 2 Million a piece. They spent another 2-3 Million fixing them up. Now they put an aircraft in the air to compete with Eastern on the Northeast Corridor. Borman was spending---

  • @firemanbart

Continued.... Borman was spending 38 Million per 757. Now figure it out. 7 aircraft x 5 Million = $35 Million. People Express was putting 7 airplanes and 900 seats (180 per aircraft) in the air agains our 1-757 that seated 185. More people, more cargo, more $. Now is that good thinking? Borman was an idiot and we wanted him gone. Eastern mis-management and out of control spending put Eastern in position for takeover by Lorenzo. Then Lorenzo destroyed EAL to build up CAL.

  • This video is priceless! Why? Because if you were fortunate enough to have been in the industry at that time you could appreciate the nostalgia that this creative endeavor brings to heart.

  • "The Wings of Man"

EASTERN AIRLINES - I WILL NEVER FORGET YOU!

  • deregulation , executive greed and incompetence destroyed the US airline flag carriers , they should be brought back , Eastern ,Pan Am and TWA , the airlines of today have no quality , service or respect for their passengers. They treat everyone like a criminal that is why I drive. To make the airlines safe again keep the arabs and their brothers off airplanes permanently. They belong on a camel .End of story. Thanks

  • I love this and the song is FANTASTIC! I worked for TWA and boy do I miss all the great old airlines!

  • Isn't it true that Eastern offered flights between Fort Lauderdale and Miami (a 30-40 minute drive) on a DC-9, or was this just a stopover or repositioning?

  • Wow! Listening the Eastern Airlines theme brought back such wonderful childhood memories. Like others, as a child in the mid-1960's, my mom and I always flew on Eastern Airlines from JFK to San Juan. Back then, in-flight service was the best. As I got into my 20's I still flew Eastern to San Juan always on their L-1011's. What a great aircraft. Remember Eastern's Whisperjet? Oh, for the good old day!!!

  • RIP to Eastern Airlines and all the great airlines of that era. IMHO thanks to Frank Lorenzo, Doug Parker, and Jonathan Ornstein the modern airline industry has been turned into a Wal-Mart industry with passengers and airline employees paying the price. EAL would NEVER have charged 2 dollars for a small bottled water nor (at least in pre Lorenzo days) treated airline employees as if they were burger-flippers. Eddie Rickenbacker and Juan Trippe must certainly be turning in their gravess!

  • What a classy and heartfelt tribute to a great airline. My first trip to San Juan was on Eastern, from JFK ! I love the music (Astrud Gilberto) and of course those beautiful pics. Thank you so much for posting this, Eastern was a fine airline in its day.

  • I flew Eastern many times from Buffalo, New York to various cities in Florida, in the 1970's and into the 1980's - when it was actually still fun to fly. Eastern pretty much ruled those East Coast to Florida routes (DL and UA were there too, as I recall). I haven't taken a plane trip in years, and if I never did again it would be much too soon.

  • my brother worked for eastern back in the late 1970's in ATL

    RIP eastern & my brother..........

  • The Horn at the end with the last picture, sung of great promises for Eastern Airlines. I remember the "smiling faces" tune. It was very catchy.

  • One thing I realy like about Eastern was that they lunched overbuilt preformus jetliners. For example L1011, 757 and 727.

  • Thanks for the Vid, my old man flew the DC-9 for Eastern, brings back some great memories!!

  • Good Tribute. excellent Video , I Flew with Easterns in 1985 from Dominican Republic to New York in the L-1011.

  • I am from Atlanta, GA...home of Delta and we always used Eastern Airlines. I really miss this airline!!!

  • Amazing tribute... I miss Eastern. It was a great airline. My grandfather loved flying for Eastern. But hey where can I find that song? I love the Eastern Song! :)

  • I got this song from Eastern Flight Attendant Training LP disk.

  • what year did the song come out? Where did you get all the pic's from?

  • I believe the girl singing "Fly Eastern, Number One To The Sun" at the end of that short radio commercial was Rita Moreno well before she became a Tony and Oscar winner.

  • Nope...it was Astrud Gilberto, of "Girl from Ipanema" fame.

  • If you have the stomach for it, go to Frank Lorenzo's Wikipedia page, and read the spin-ladened handjob that was written about him. Yeah, he may have foreseen the realities of a derugulated airline world, but he sure left a lot of corpses floating behind him in the river as he and his buddies lined their pockets.

  • I read it...and spin-laden is an understatement. Frank Lorenzo=Ken Lay.

    RIP Eastern.

  • wow beautiful airplanes..Nothing like flying Eastern.

  • I wish that Eastern could've stayed in business, they were a great airline to fly with, their flight attendants were so friendly!!!

  • My expirience with eastern? Flying in a rattling DC-8 from Miami to JFK, with a stewardess calling "chapmange? Champange?" offering the same after take off.

They were great. My Mom worked for them. And the 727 was ironically called the "whisperjet".

    Happy days. :)

  • Man I can't stop watching this. I wonder what it was like to be a pilot back then. It must have been so much better than nowadays. If I could go back in time and fly when my Grandad did as a pilot, I would be in heaven on earth.

  • I flew Eastern while in college. Loved every minute of it. I was in their frequent flyer club.

  • My Granddad flew for Eastern Airlines for 35 years. He flew every plane they had except for the L1011, DC10, and 747 (the 747 was wet leased from PanAm for about 2 years).

  • Eastern ordered three 747-121's from Boeing and decided during production that the Lockheed L-1011 would suit their route structure more efficiently, and sold two of their order positions to TWA . They took delivery of one 747 painted in full Eastern colors, and operated this aircraft until delivery of the L-1011. Eastern was the Launch Customer for the L-1011. During operation, the 747 was sold to Pan Am and re-registered. They wet leased two more from Pan Am, until the L10's arrived.

  • I beleive one of those three 747s was TWA flight 800.The 747s Eastern ordered went to TWA.

  • Happy 80th Birthday EAL!!!

  • I cried when I first saw this. Remembering a great airline. Thanks for posting!

  • Wow What a blast from the past. Remember If you had wings? One of my favorites at Early Disney. Thanks

  • I sure do,the last time I flew was just before Christmas in 1990,I went with my father on a business trip to San Francisco.we flew the same 757 that we left Tampa on,we even reboarded the same plane during our layover in Atlanta.we came home from Atlanta on a DC-9.I have not flown again since,I now work with my Father,we are Commercial Real Estate Developers in Tampa.

  • It was people like you who crossed the picketline and flew the Scab Eastern. If you people would have stayed off Eastern, it could have been saved through the bankruptcy court and would still be flying today. But you crossed the picketline of ALPA and the IAM and that allowed Lorenzo to keep flying the airline into the ground and into liquidation. Your just as guilty as Lorenzo for Eastern's Demise. Screw you people, on this site talking on how you loved Eastern. You make me sick.

  • Well maybe they didnt have a choice.

  • They had a choice. Nobody was forced across the picket line at gunpoint. It was the true Eastern employees that tried to stop the plundering of assets and liquidation of the company they loved and worked for for 20 plus years. The average seniority at Eastern was 22 years. Scabs had a choice. Cross or not cross. they chose to cross and helped Lorenzo continue his liquidation... where did it get them? No scabs, and we might have had a sale to a new owner/airline. The scabs killed Eastern.

  • what are scabs? i remember this airline when i was a kid. the commercial ad would air always at the end of wheel of fortune.

  • @panhead55

A scab is an employee who crosses the picket line to go to work for the company when the Union calls a strike. Scab means "temporary relief", just like the scab on your arm when you fall. Once the contract is settled, the scab is discarded by the company, and the Union workers have nothing to do with that employee ever again. Author Jack London who wrote "White Fang", and "Call of the Wild", called a Scab "The lowest form of life on the earth". A scab is lower than pond scum.

  • @jhowej3

I told you,I never worked for Eastern,I flew with them, idiot!!!

  • @WCD73

You and your dad are scab brained. If you flew in 1990, then you crossed the Pilots and Mechanics Strike Picket Lines. You and your dad are lower than pond scum.

  • @jhowej3

Excuse ME? My Father was never a pilot for Esatern,My Godfather was from October of 1981 until their demise in January of 1991.

  • My Godfather was a pilot with Eastern from 1977-91,he flew the 727!!!

  • eastern was real airline

  • God rest your soul Eastern,Pan Am,TWA,Braniff,National,etc

  • Eastern was the "shizzle", I flew with them all the time in the mid 80's when I first went into the Military.....best service, food, liquor, and "Eagle Peanuts"...I haven't flown since 1992, and with all the "911" Bullshit in the airports, I'll never fly again. Eastern, United, Pan-Am; those where the "good ol' days".

  • I worked in the Ionosphere Club at IAH. We all "earned our wings everyday". A great example of what corporate greed can do to hard working people and it's getting worse.I remember listening to a conversation back in the late 70's with some of the Eastern folks who had been around for a long time talking about the "good old days" when someone said "I hate to say it but THESE ARE the good old days".I work for another airline now and I shudder to think that these might be the good old days.

  • i miss eastern my whole family worked for them in philly and jfk.that was a real job to have.

  • Just out of curiousity what did you think about the who ghost thing that came about as a result of the crash in the everglades? What did you think of the movie "ghost of flight 401"?

  • What is the song/track in the background?

  • I recognize the singer. She's a Latin Jazz singer named Astrud Gilberto. I don't think [Fly Eastern] is an official song from any of her albums...sounds like an advertising promo to me, but the singer is definately Astrud.

  • Eastern Airlines ceased operations on January 17, 1991, a VERY dark day in my life

  • Actual Shutdown date was January 19, 1991. Yes a very sad day indeed.

  • @wbeckwithusa

Official and actual shutdown day was January 19, 1991. You may have been shut down in your city on the 17th, but the 19th is the last operational day.

  • nice fleet! became interested in aviation after a flight from phl to ft lauderdale then miami on a eastern 727 when i was about 10 yrs old. to bad for lorenzo

  • eastern used to rule at hartsfield atlanta airport pre delta takeover

  • Grew up in the 70's and 80's. I spent several years in Ft. Lauderdale's Melrose Park right on the approach to runway 13, and it seemed like it was always an Eastern 727 or 1011 on the approach.

  • I flew Eastern, many times when I was in the Military, in the 70's. The aircraft, service, and ammenities were "NON PAREIL!" Astrud Gilberto's sexy, powerful voice still makes me melt.

  • I flew Eastern everywhere...they were great - much better than DL on the east coast...NRSA in first class all the time!

  • Yes, I miss the WhisperJets. Flew DC-6's out of Port Columbus to Miami as a kid.

  • Sure they were not Douglas DC-7Bs or Lockheed Electras? I know Eastern did

lease some 6Bs in the late 50s.

  • They probably were DC-7B's, as I couldn't tell as a child. All I remember were the flames coming out of the exhaust ports at night. My mother was terrified and Dad just laughed.

  • I loved this airline. As a kid I flew their 727, DC9, L1011 and DC8's.

  • Thank you for paying tribute to the finest airlines that ever graced the firendly skies!!!!

  • Don't forget the Eastern Constellations that were flying up until 1967... You could always listen as the sound lingered on the air for minutes after one had flown over... The jets today can't offer such a nostalgic memory as this:)

  • I love Eastern's white jets.

  • Bean counters and the greedy killed Eastern.Starting with Lorenzo he started bleeding it white.

  • So, this is the famous "Number One to the Sun" by Astrud Gilberto

  • i remember eastern airlines when i was a kid ....even the walt disney ride ..if u had wings..... love that ride ....im now a pilot for eastern virtual airlines...evair....com look at our site.....my pilot #is evo303 for EASTERN airlines...great site.. hope to see u there......

  • What the hell is that? Is there anyone over 9 years old who'd do that??? Are you a "virtual person"?? You need a REAL life, not a VIRTUAL one...

  • One of the proudest moments of my younger life was being hire by Eastern Airlines in TPA. In those days, you had to be something special to be selected by a carrier.

  • Aint it the truth. I know Delta and Eastern were competitors but it was the same thing at delta from what I heard. Back then, it was a big deal to be hired by an airline.

  • Gone But Not Forgotten

  • Yes Eastern Airlines, PAN AM, TWA the greatest airlines that started it all in the US, all victims of greed and regulation, let us not forget...how many great companies listed in 2001 Space Odesey no longer around...I remember as a kid once in one of Eastern first 747 they raffled an inflatable 747, what great memories...

  • Sabena, Western, Swissair too.

  • Wow, great tribute to a once giant of the skies. Sad to have witnessed the downfall and death of "The Wings Of Man." Eastern had such diverse fleets. Thanks for the memories.

  • Good Job! Let "The Wings of Man" forever fly on in our hearts.

  • A nice tribute to one of the biggest and favourit airline of the 70´and 80´.

  • I was in the flight that after dropping us off in La Paz.. it crashed into the Illimani mountains in Bolivia.

    a 727-200

  • I actually dreamed that accident up the night it happened! In my dream me and my friends were a music band like Menudo and the major of some Bolivia city had invited us for the "inaugural flight" at the city airport which of course was an Eastern 727 that ended up crashing in a mountain. I woke up and read the news. I was in Puerto Rico.

Barpaza you were lucky. Puerto Rican hearts were with our Latin brothers and sisters that day in tragedy.

  • Thank you dear friend. I could not believe it. You know. I remember the plane was not full. My dad and about five other guys were in the back playing a guitar and drinking. I was on the laps of the flight attendant. We had a great time. she gave me things to eat and organge juice. its very sad
