if you look at the label it says 58 ,M.G.M. usualy put the year in the numbering system and the artist on Mercury was Brook Benton and his was just called "Shadrack" peaked at #19 on Billboard in Febuary of 1962
I don't know who that could be, but I'm not surprised. This song goes back. I heard a gospel quartet version of this on Lou Rallo's Big Beat Show a few years ago, and I think that was from '51 or 52. It's one of the best shows on the radio by the way.. Check it out if you get a chance
@PJDooWop May I offer a possibility? Brook Benton had a single release called "Shadrack" on Mercury 71912 on 1961. This was at the hight of his career. Don't know if it is the same song but . . .
@PJDooWop Further research has revealed that "Sorry" by the Impalas - Cub 9022-hit the R&B charts in May, 1959. This next sequential numbered record seems to indicate a late April/early May release in 1959. Hope this helps. Have hours of listening to catch up on all of your postings. Expect to find some rare gems there. Thanks PJ!
Kool I know that one, really like it too but never had a copy. I'm fairly sure it's not on a 78, at least made in the U.S. There might be a copy on Reo or something, Canadian press.
Marv Goldberg has it as January 1959! Tho I've never heard of a Cub 78 yet... I have Sorry by the Impalas on 78 but it's canadian 78 on MGM. (also 59... makes one think..) we're talking a high dollar record if it exists!
I was saying '61 off the top of my head.. Don't know why I thought this was done so late. The funny thing is I just checked Osborne's book and he listed this as '58.
@PJDooWop As a reference, Jimmy Jones' "Handy Man" charted in February, 1960 on Cub 9049. I think 1959 is more accurate as the year of release. Hope this helps.

I'll have to find that song. I'm pretty sure this came out before 1961, and I think the song itself goes back a long way before that

Quality mix of styles that works really well :)))

I agree. Back then none of these styles even existed.. They were just making a good record. Interesting how later on we categorized everything
