I remember watching this video back in 1992 with a friend. I said 'Wow, the guy isn't even shoegazing - he's actually looking up!' 'Maybe someone's hung a pair of shoes up there', my friend was quick to point out.
This and 'Breather' are my definite favorites out of the 1st album. And Rachel's vocal contribution is, of course, fantastic.
This video is pretty god-awful. The song is decent though, but it doesn't start to rock until about 1:30 in. I think I'll stick to Lush, Ride, and MBV as far as Shoegaze goes =p
The album this is off (Whirlpool) is definitely recommended. I'd also say Slowdive are essential shoegaze listening although some of their music does wear a bit thin after repeated listens
One of the best gigs I ever went to was these guys at the Town and Country Club in Camden - 1991 - managed to wangle off school for the day! great light show from memory
I just discovered this song (and as J Lennon say) I shoulda known better because I'm kinda involved in music and I'm just admitting what an idiot I was to have missed the boat on Bands like Chapterhouse, Lush, MBV, Curve in the early 90s. ( in my defense I was getting into Italian film soundtrax at this time) I hope this sound comes come back. Rumskib is awesome and I heard some band from Peru that had the same sound but can't remember the name. Heard them on Big Sonic Heaven Indy 103.1 in LA
Wow! Chapterhouse. Takes me back. Saw them at the Roadmender in Northampton around 92 93!!?? Used to love them and Ride. Over 15 years ago.!!...sniff....
kitchens and mbv are great, but the J&MC really do take the cake as far as influence goes, although you could also count ARKane, Cocteau Twins and even Spacemen 3.
@ indyironman I would think antiviolent meant born in the 70's so he or she would be in there late teens/early twenties for this group. Not really going to appreciate music like this when your a toddler! I was lucky and born in 1969 :-)
Why don't you take a break from listening to this great music and watch 'Ravinator 4: time and Space' by DonRavings. And there's always the classic 'Crab in the Crease' if you like hockey.
After all these years, this tracks STILL features the greatest utilization of that "When The Levee Breaks" drum sample. Rest of the album isn't so hot, but this song is fantastic.
I have no idea what they're doing now. I wish I could have grown up in the UK. I've been there and peolple are a hell of a lot nicer there than they are in the US. Everyone knows Brits have the best accents. Also, everyone knows the Brits have better music. Us yanks don't have shit on the Brits.
Not sure about now, but a few years ago -- Russell was in a band called Inner Sleeve; Ashley was in a band called Cuba; Simon was in a band called Mojave 3 (with Rachel and Neil from Slowdive); Stephen was in some undisclosed secure location; and Andy'd won an honorary Emmy for his sound design work on "Walking With Dinosaurs".
I was 15 when I bought this album...you're not old! Robin Guthrie from the Cocteau Twins produced this album...did not know about the slowdive connection.
Loooooooooooooved this era in music, early 90's shoegazing!! I was in college and thought i was soooo emo before emo became a term, I even had the doc martins and striped stockings, ratty green sweater and horn rimmed glasses!!
is mad listenin 2 this again. reminds me when i were just a little indie teen at skewl.wikid it on ere coz i cnt listen 2 it coz i only gt it on vinyl.fkin a.lol
Actually, I agree. Ride and Slowdive are preferrable to MBV. I like Lush, Pale Saints and Chapterhouse better than MBV too. MBV was all right, but all that noisy crap can get annoying.
I also like Slowdive more than MBV. If Souvlaki had came out in 91, it woulda gotten as much noise as Loveless. And as great and influential as MBV are, I think they've become a "cool" band for hipsters to name drop. And hipsters are scum.
Slowdive and MBV do not really have much in common me thinks.Cannot see Slowdive do anything like "Soft as snow" or "You made me Realize".MBV are sexy, loud, physical, sometimes very fast, very noisy and occasionally ethereal, Slowdive are always ethereal and quite. My Bloody Valentine are a rock band in the tradition of VU, The Mary Chains or Sonic Youth, Slowdive are something different entirely, in the tradition of the Cocteau Twins.I feel no scorn but I like MBV much more.
ummmm, yes he looks like a proper nancy, but then 16 years ago he was soooo luuusssshhhh, just like mark gardener off ride (radio 1 sarcasm juat in case anyone thought i was more remoulded than i am) v v v stunning, can appreciate it more now. anyone know whats happened to them??
Brilliant stuff - Chapterhoese were the greatest band in 91/92. Spent many a good night bouning of the walls to this sond (mainly at the Toothbrush in Rayleigh Essex)
i've always really liked the time period in musical history that this style came out of. i think alot of great pieces are sometimes overlooked with the passing of time. of course, it's understood that music from a social aspect is constantly changing, which presents an anomaly to the music lover, in that there is always going to be something new to discover. thanks for this!
A good dreamy song for every summerholiday, actually the album ( Whirlpool) version takes a Banshees sample I guess, and also behind the desk there was Cocteau Twins's Robin Guthrie; a total masterpiece.
Actually I think the Banshees sampled John Bonham "waiting for the levee" was the song I think, then these guys did the same for some reason. Good beat even though I don't like Zeppelin.
Wow - plugged in Chapterhouse expecting not to see anything, but saw this. This song really turned me on to alternative music - and made me feel VERY old! awesome, thanks a million :)
