  • I remember watching this video back in 1992 with a friend. I said 'Wow, the guy isn't even shoegazing - he's actually looking up!' 'Maybe someone's hung a pair of shoes up there', my friend was quick to point out.

This and 'Breather' are my definite favorites out of the 1st album. And Rachel's vocal contribution is, of course, fantastic.

  • I don't think Slowdive could ever wear thin for me

  • early 90's & late 80's shoegaze was an amazing time in music!!! however, shoegaze bands on the labrador label are just as talented!!!

  • This video is pretty god-awful. The song is decent though, but it doesn't start to rock until about 1:30 in. I think I'll stick to Lush, Ride, and MBV as far as Shoegaze goes =p

  • The album this is off (Whirlpool) is definitely recommended. I'd also say Slowdive are essential shoegaze listening although some of their music does wear a bit thin after repeated listens

  • Shoegaze in general tends to wear thin after repeated listens. Infact, most music in general wears thin after repeated listens.

Honestly, the band that got me into Shoegaze was Scarling.

  • Shoegaze isn't known for being flashy on stage. lol

    Love this song.

  • definitivamente magica, amo esta cancion

  • Obra maestra. Ya es un clásico.

  • "zegustavo" Siouxies and the banshees les robaron un sample, los originales son estos chicos

  • [singing] We will make time stop for the two of us!

  • LOL. napolean dynamite anyone?

  • es un buen grupo , un buen video, pero tiene mucho este tema a uno de Siouxies and the banshees

  • Saw Chapterhouse at a small club in Reno, NV in the early '90's...they were great but not appreciated at the time.

  • Video is meh. Song is great.

  • il piu grande gruppo anni 90 !!!

  • is this some kind of commercial shoegaze?

  • Commercial shoegaze?

    Are you sniffing lumberjack's anus?!

  • i love ride,lush,pale saints,swervedriver,moose,slowdive,the greatest of all:mbv..and all that stuff..but don't like'em..why??

  • This is atrocious...dude thinks he's in some glam video or something...

  • Check out The High Violets from portland on Myspace great sounding band shoegaze heaven

  • lolmao @ napoleon dynamite comment

  • One of the best gigs I ever went to was these guys at the Town and Country Club in Camden - 1991 - managed to wangle off school for the day! great light show from memory

  • recien los estoy conociendo, pero con esta cancion me quedo gustando el grupo

  • muy buena banda...

  • this song and the whirpool album the first connaisance of the shoegazer i have so, since then it was my favourite shoegazing band...

  • I just discovered this song (and as J Lennon say) I shoulda known better because I'm kinda involved in music and I'm just admitting what an idiot I was to have missed the boat on Bands like Chapterhouse, Lush, MBV, Curve in the early 90s. ( in my defense I was getting into Italian film soundtrax at this time) I hope this sound comes come back. Rumskib is awesome and I heard some band from Peru that had the same sound but can't remember the name. Heard them on Big Sonic Heaven Indy 103.1 in LA

  • This tune and 'Falling Down'. Not a lot else from these shoe gazers but pretty decent all the same.

  • You didn't like Autosleeper and Breather?

  • Don't forget Treasure

    Whirlpool is a great album

  • this reminds me of doing my A levels and messing round with drugs! heady times!

  • I was 23 and at still shivers and I hear it again and again....

  • I think of this as the male-fronted equivalent to Lush's Sweetness and Light. Amazing song.

  • If you listen really closely its a sample of the drum introduction of Led Zepellin's 'When the Levee breaks'. Honestly.

  • No. It's a Schoolly D. track. It was also used in a Siouxsie & The Banshees track.

  • Gangsta rap!

  • that would be "kiss them for me", right?

  • While it does use the PSK drum break, froger7 is right, it also samples WTLB but sped up, just like Beasties.

  • great band great song, brought dance to the shoegazing sea

  • Does anybody have any idea what drum machine plays the main beat on this song?

  • linn drum

  • This song is better than sex.

the video is a bit gay but it's good, the singer acts like a girl.

  • Gotta love glassy-eyed shoegazers. Great song, cheers.

  • These are the prettiest women I've ever seen.

  • hehe

  • oh my god my teenage years have just come flooding back! I lost my virginity to this song and haven't heard it since!

  • heard you listened to it for the 1st time a week ago?

  • thank you for posting this, it still gives me chills after all these years!

  • I injoy this group. Come back.

  • LOL soft 90's rock?

  • its called shoegaze sir. do your research.

  • Rachel is pearl

  • indie... fuck indie! this is shoegaze!

  • I cant believe after years (pre, during and post shoegaze) i managed to listen to this song again on this pishmilk

  • Didn't Rachel from Slowdive sing backing vocals on this? I think so

  • yeah she sings in the end of this song

  • Wow! Chapterhouse. Takes me back. Saw them at the Roadmender in Northampton around 92 93!!?? Used to love them and Ride. Over 15 years ago.!!...sniff....

  • singer kinda looks like napolean dynamite

  • shoegaze 4ever!!

  • I was 23 and still shiver when I listen to this song

  • god this is the creepiest video ive ever seen

  • i agree. that dude (the singer) looks like one guy i know

  • These guys 18 at this time and composed one of the best early 90's album : Whirlpool

  • REALLY?! Are you kidding me?

  • mother of pearl.....

    Keep looking down!!!!!!

  • The greatest song I've ever heard in my whole entire life.

This song makes me want to be alive.

  • does anyone know why they called themselves Chapterhouse?

  • Kitchens of Distinction did my aunt's bungalow... stainless is the new mauve, say they.

  • kitchens and mbv are great, but the J&MC really do take the cake as far as influence goes, although you could also count ARKane, Cocteau Twins and even Spacemen 3.

  • chapterhouse is cool but, Man Out Of Space Easiest is even BETTER!!!!

  • @ indyironman I would think antiviolent meant born in the 70's so he or she would be in there late teens/early twenties for this group. Not really going to appreciate music like this when your a toddler! I was lucky and born in 1969 :-)

  • Why don't you take a break from listening to this great music and watch 'Ravinator 4: time and Space' by DonRavings. And there's always the classic 'Crab in the Crease' if you like hockey.

  • this song was published in the early nineties around the time of desert storm. not the 70's!

  • omg. i wish i was born in 70's. this music really is amazing.

  • NO MORE DISCUSSION:

    THE BEST SHOEGAZE BANDS WERE(ARE):

    1.- Kitchens of distinction

    2.- MBV

    The others are influenced bands.

  • discussion my foot. that's a monologue you're having there. and it's YOUR OWN OPINION, not a fact, so stop forcing it over others.

  • KITCHEEENS!!!

  • Uh, you forgot the Jesus and Mary Chain. That's where it all fucking started.

  • ummmm....going with pale saints, but do love Chapterhouse," burn me out from the inside".KILLER!!

  • doughnt bee ah hayter... enjoy da muzick. crank dat chapterhouse

  • Almost reminds me of Thompson Twins' "If You Were Here"

  • Perfect and beutiful..and packed with memories of Sonning sunshine :)

  • Realy, I love this son, it´s wonderful and perfect.

    Thanks for posting

  • Love this song so much

    Thank you for posting!!!

  • my favorite chapterhouse song. If anyone know the lyrics please let me know.

  • The drum interlude at 1:44 is IDENTICAL to the beat used in the Siouxsie and the Banshees song, "Kiss Them For Me."

  • Lol yes - I've always noticed that too.

  • It's off an old hip-hop track by Schooly D -'P.S.K. (What Does It Mean?'). Classic indie-dance.

  • L O RFLOL

  • it was falling down i wanted

  • After all these years, this tracks STILL features the greatest utilization of that "When The Levee Breaks" drum sample. Rest of the album isn't so hot, but this song is fantastic.

  • Fabulous song. Whirlpool, as an album, goes SERIOUSLY downhill after the first few songs, though.

  • amazing amazing amazing song

  • no shoegazers better than Jesus & Mary Chain, and Dean & Toni from Curve, and maybe that one great LP from Hope Sandoval and Mazzy Star.

  • love the shoegazing, love the textures and the harmonies, please bring back the late 80's early 90's in music!

  • i love these guys... this was my favorite shoegazing one back in the day...

  • if you like this you ought to hear the french band alcest.

  • Yup.

  • This is so wonderful, I wish the whole shoegazing scene could come back, it beats what's in the charts right now.

  • Takes me back to the days of uni, great

anyone know what they are doing now?

  • I have no idea what they're doing now. I wish I could have grown up in the UK. I've been there and peolple are a hell of a lot nicer there than they are in the US. Everyone knows Brits have the best accents. Also, everyone knows the Brits have better music. Us yanks don't have shit on the Brits.

  • ahhhh sweet

  • Not sure about now, but a few years ago -- Russell was in a band called Inner Sleeve; Ashley was in a band called Cuba; Simon was in a band called Mojave 3 (with Rachel and Neil from Slowdive); Stephen was in some undisclosed secure location; and Andy'd won an honorary Emmy for his sound design work on "Walking With Dinosaurs".

  • i was a teen... now i'm 33!!! backing vocals by slowdive's rachel...

  • I was 15 when I bought this album...you're not old! Robin Guthrie from the Cocteau Twins produced this album...did not know about the slowdive connection.

  • Shoegazer rulez!!

  • Loooooooooooooved this era in music, early 90's shoegazing!! I was in college and thought i was soooo emo before emo became a term, I even had the doc martins and striped stockings, ratty green sweater and horn rimmed glasses!!

  • yea, you were just gay.

  • this song sounds like mbv-soon meets ride-vapour trail.

really addictive song, love playing it with my guitar:)

  • doesn't this track sample Kiss Them For Me by Siouxsie and the Banshees

  • Yes you're right , the drum machine sounds sometimes like the one in KISS THEM FROM ME from Siouxsie

  • is mad listenin 2 this again. reminds me when i were just a little indie teen at skewl.wikid it on ere coz i cnt listen 2 it coz i only gt it on vinyl.fkin a.lol

  • Radical! Chapterhouse is awesome!!! -Matthew Cepican A&R Vesuvius Records

  • My Bloody Valentine were the best shoegazer band, but "Pearl" was my favorite shoegazer song.

  • Try Slowdive or Ride. They're better than MBV.

  • Actually, I agree. Ride and Slowdive are preferrable to MBV. I like Lush, Pale Saints and Chapterhouse better than MBV too. MBV was all right, but all that noisy crap can get annoying.

  • I also like Slowdive more than MBV. If Souvlaki had came out in 91, it woulda gotten as much noise as Loveless. And as great and influential as MBV are, I think they've become a "cool" band for hipsters to name drop. And hipsters are scum.

  • Yeah that comment is gonna get lotsa thumbs down from MBV fan boys. I welcome your scorn.

  • Slowdive and MBV do not really have much in common me thinks.Cannot see Slowdive do anything like "Soft as snow" or "You made me Realize".MBV are sexy, loud, physical, sometimes very fast, very noisy and occasionally ethereal, Slowdive are always ethereal and quite. My Bloody Valentine are a rock band in the tradition of VU, The Mary Chains or Sonic Youth, Slowdive are something different entirely, in the tradition of the Cocteau Twins.I feel no scorn but I like MBV much more.

  • my sentiments exactly

  • great tune but the vid is soooo weak. proper cheesy. singer looks like a real spod

  • ummmm, yes he looks like a proper nancy, but then 16 years ago he was soooo luuusssshhhh, just like mark gardener off ride (radio 1 sarcasm juat in case anyone thought i was more remoulded than i am) v v v stunning, can appreciate it more now. anyone know whats happened to them??

  • "you've got to satisfy my soul..." tahnks a lot for posting this video i hadn't seen it in ages

  • I was 23...great memories !

  • how old are you now??

  • probably your mum's age.

  • now dats old...

  • The song and the video are so stunning!

  • BRINGS BACK GOOD MEMORIES...

  • brings back good memories thanks

  • Sublime !

  • This video make me think about Eagle's Abba. Am I wrong ?

  • I always subconsciously hear "Toaster of yellow". Haha.

  • Brilliant stuff - Chapterhoese were the greatest band in 91/92. Spent many a good night bouning of the walls to this sond (mainly at the Toothbrush in Rayleigh Essex)

  • I was waiting to see this video again since 1992...this song is beautiful and reminds souvenirs to all the people born in the early 70's..

  • Daughter of yellow....

    Mother of pearl

  • fockin ell

  • This and 'We Are The Beautiful' are the two tracks that should have bought them out of semi indie obscurity. Great beats, thanks for posting

  • i've always really liked the time period in musical history that this style came out of. i think alot of great pieces are sometimes overlooked with the passing of time. of course, it's understood that music from a social aspect is constantly changing, which presents an anomaly to the music lover, in that there is always going to be something new to discover. thanks for this!

  • A good dreamy song for every summerholiday, actually the album ( Whirlpool) version takes a Banshees sample I guess, and also behind the desk there was Cocteau Twins's Robin Guthrie; a total masterpiece.

  • Actually I think the Banshees sampled John Bonham "waiting for the levee" was the song I think, then these guys did the same for some reason. Good beat even though I don't like Zeppelin.

  • All hail the gods of shoegaze: Chapterhouse!!

  • Wow - plugged in Chapterhouse expecting not to see anything, but saw this. This song really turned me on to alternative music - and made me feel VERY old! awesome, thanks a million :)

  • Can't belive this. Thanks for posting. This is real!!

  • thanks for the high quality version again.

  • amazing video and song!!

  • I was 22 at this time...great souvenirs ! thanx
