Age uke blocking hand should not be horizontal, should be slightly inclined almost 45% otherwise the blocking arm cannot be strong enough to block an attack. Also the length of his forward stances change, when he moves forward and blocks, stances are too short. I also agree that he bends his rear leg too much.
This Shotokan representation of Heian Shodan was good but it could be improved a bit. Good juntai, too much stomping and a bit of a float into a better stance after the technique is completed. Plus all the stances could be lower.
lock his back leg out? In zenkutsu dachi? never, leg should always have a slight bend to it, but be strong enough to have your sensei walk up the back of it.
Well done, nice wuick techniques, overall count too fast more my liking, but good. Stance may be too wide (shoulder width) but are deep enough.
I like it, very agresive!! i come from a shotokai back ground and now i am doing bushido jujitsu.........remember there is always more than one way to skin a cat!!!
When Gichin Funakoshi took Karate to Japan, he changed the name of the Pinan Series to Heian and swapped the names for Nidan and Shodan around. Both names are used widely today.
I believe that was a PINAN NIDAN!! Whoever made this title for the video is NOT a practicioner of this martial art. No offense but I'm a practioner of KARATE!!!
Right, ok, I know the snappy noises are impressive. If you watch his feet, however, you can see that his back stances are very poor, looking more like front stances. His front stances, on that note, look like some bastardization between front and back stances, his back foot facing sideways most of the time. Crisp punches though...
aw a good heian shodan

lol.. I used to train in the same club (stavanger-in Norway)as Stian. I must say he's gotten a lot better the last year than shown on that video.

I agree... weak stances and not enough focus, slow down a bit man :P u'd get 19th place at a tournament for that lol.

Good snap - and good locked in stances, for how fast he's going. Whoever said his stances were weak is an idiot.
Weird, though - how some call it Pinan an dother Heinan

This is definitely *not* Pinan Nidan and it *is* Heian Shodan. It's not a very good representation of it, but there's no denying it's Heian Shodan.

His stances are weak and often incorrect. Bad basics for a black belt!
blazingpie 5 years ago
Not bad, and I'm sure he'd get points when doing it for competition but ultimately looks only gets you so far.
I do find his stances to be the weakest part of his demonstration however. Some are too wide, and he's potentially off balance every time he steps.
tokyoskippy 5 years ago
Exactly he need to try to snap his gi also instead of stomping on the ground for sound.

*squints* Is that a black belt?
