@theironfreak It's called "Pointing and calling". Because of the high speed of the train and with the Shinkansen being the most punctual (on time) rail system in the world, the drivers use this "pointing and calling" system to make sure they are on time and concentrating.
that thing looks wicked, just like a snake slithering around the corner. Man will it run. If anybody out there wants to buy a ticket for me to take a ride on one, oh about $1500.00 will be ok. This is easily the best & coolest looking train in Japan. Only thing missing from is a large toothed mouth like on those old 2nd world war fighter planes! :-)
great system the japanese drivers have in their training is to 'point-confirm' every important action that they make driving the train......try it when you're crossing the road or (did or did'nt I remember to do it ) when locking your door....it really does work! and it can keep you out of hospital... if only the train driver of the paddington train (disaster) had learnt this system..................?
500series retired from NOZOMi service, but these trains are still operated as KODAMA service in SANYO-Shinkansen area. This new KODAMA service, some amusing conversion for kids ( Driving seat for kids on car No.8 ) have done.
Well,NO, it's just the confirmation of the driver's action.
Firstly, driver get informations mainly from his eyes, then, confirm by talking and pointing to the indicators at the same time. This is very popular procedure to confirm the important operations in japan.
@warriorprince1010 It should be the model in use all over Europe. Let's out-Jap the Japanese.
I feel sorry for these people -- they really got dealt a devastation shock with the earthquakes (there have been more now) and tsunami's.
I hope that we are going in to help them out: Italians or Greeks are perhaps a good idea as these people have had their experiences. We are better with water but nothing stops a tsunami.
@warriorprince1010 for your information Japan pretty much invented high speed rail. In 1964, the first bullet train was made and it was by far the fastest train. Made for the olympics that year.
In Germany the governor of Bavary has rejected the maglev project between Munich and the airport, valuating it too much expensive proportionally to its benefits.
UK? I don't think UK is a good place to start, since they needed many decades to build a REAL high speed line (the CTRL line London-Channel Tunnel) and specifically it has been projected by french engineers.
I live in Canada the distances Japan deals with are not the same and Australia does'nt need to move half it's population every 24 hrs or is it 48 hrs? not quite the same.A little more chance of meeting your sweetie on the train here eh :)

Why are countries spending all these millions on wheeled traditional railways when Maglev technology has only been commercially viable for around a decade and will already do 500Kph. Sure Maglev's are hugely expensive to build, but the low operating and maintenence costs will actually offset the build cost within 15 years. After that time it will be hugely more profitable and reliable than any wheeled rail network. Maglev is the future, Bullet trains are the past. They do look cool though!
The bullet train that is going to be built in California is going to be very similar to the one in Spain and the only defference I've noticed is that the Calfornian bullet train's top speed is going to be at 220 mph and the one in Spain is at a top speed at 215 mph (235 km) so you only have a 5 mph defference but on the other hand the bullet train in Spain will probably be faster in the future.
215 mph is actually around 340 km/h. Spain's AVE lines are limited to 300 km/h until ERTMS level 2 is implemented then they can do 220 mph(350 km/h) the same speed as California
I have good news Calfornia will be having a bullet train in year 2020 and will go at a top speed 220 mph. (340 km) This is no rumor I repeat this is not a rumor bring on the future and ditch the slugish and non efficent metro bus.
We Dutch don't have HST connections here apart from two that are in preparation and that will use the Thalys (French) and ICE (German) but I seriously LOVE this Japanese stuff.
Do you know that your taxes are used to SUBSIDIZE roads and Airlines with Millions and even Billions anually? Why don't we just subsidize these trains and have a better quality of life? Let's pour our money here instead of their! These trains have a better chance of turning a profit then roads will NEVER!
Every major city in the world should have a Shinkansen Station. It is so---- tanoshii (fun)! I lived in Tokyo, worked and vacationed all over the country and every where I wanted to go, the Shinkansen took me while I am napping, reading, eating, hugging a love one, giving my friend a back rub, with my legs kicked up, never have to worry about being time, parking space. I had my laptop open when I needed to work Monday morning as I come into the city. It is the safest and economical way to travel
Dear Yuki1meltingsnow, what is this? You trying to make me jealous? Well your doing a dam good job. I wish I could do all that! The closest I ever got to the Shinkansen was watching it arrive every morning at Kyoto station from my hotel room while I was there on a training course for my company. You could set your watch by it's arrival. Just an amazing train and tells you a lot about the Japanese people.
I road the TGV East line between Metz near Strosburg France near German Border to Paris east station at 200 mPH 320 KPH that was awsome 235 miles in an hour and 25 minutes awsome
Dear stroock6394, thanks for the tip, but money is tight at the moment. It will just to sit on the shelf with all other 'wish I could' for just a while longer.
How quiet ! it's amazing to see(to hear) how quiet it is from inside as well as outside, nothing to compare with even the new TGV Duplex. And the cockpit is a true bubble glass cockpit, looks even better than the AGV's one.
There is an advantage of not having rail in the early 1800 like the Great Britain. Right now it cost too much for UK to acquire new land to build straighter track for HSR?

All video are fantastic!! Unfortunately I was not in the cockpit of the Nozomi, but I was traveling from Okayama to Shin Kobe. This is a great feeling!! Thank you very much for the videos.
Due to the operating speed is usually over 200km/h,traditional railroad signals are not sent well by operating room, instad, they use ATC(Automatic Train Control)to send different signals(including speed limit, when to stop before train reached stations, and other important messages)directly from operating center into the cockpit of driver, and safeguard the security of trains.
@evildude220 could be better by calling it "Joe" lol xDD
Names on the Shinkansen has sense, like: Kodama (Echo) which is fast (also the echo by itself bounces everywhere so it makes sense that the train stops at all stations on the route). Hikari (light) which is faster than the echo. JR had to name a faster service than Hikari, so it became Nozomi (Wish / Hope) it says that the wish or hope are something faster than the light itself (not to go into details)
Gotta save some money to get there....Gee...looks like a shark...

The reason seems that the N700 is more efficient than the 500.
And the 500 is actually cut off some seats (maybe 5-10 seats) than other series of trains due to its long nose.
It is very important for them to keep every trains' capasity the same.
Because it makes selling ticket easy.

All video are fantastic!! Unfortunately I was not in the cockpit of the Nozomi, but I was traveling from Okayama to Shin Kobe. This is a great feeling!! Thank you very much for the videos.

they don't use the lights?

Due to the operating speed is usually over 200km/h,traditional railroad signals are not sent well by operating room, instad, they use ATC(Automatic Train Control)to send different signals(including speed limit, when to stop before train reached stations, and other important messages)directly from operating center into the cockpit of driver, and safeguard the security of trains.

@stewartyuen
"Nozomi" is a very popular word as the person's first name.

@ks3298 So it would be equivalent to naming a train "John" in the US?
evildude220 1 year ago
@evildude220 Naw. "Nozomi" means "Hope" or "Wish". The other two services called "Hikari" and "Kodama" mean "Light" and "Echo".

@th3gtr Dude it means Jabs bitches dying to do a slurp echoing BJ hoping...wishing to light up our lives,
ianc119 11 months ago
@evildude220 could be better by calling it "Joe" lol xDD
Names on the Shinkansen has sense, like: Kodama (Echo) which is fast (also the echo by itself bounces everywhere so it makes sense that the train stops at all stations on the route). Hikari (light) which is faster than the echo. JR had to name a faster service than Hikari, so it became Nozomi (Wish / Hope) it says that the wish or hope are something faster than the light itself (not to go into details)

The Nozomi series is excellent could we please have Parts 1-5 consolidated into one piece. It would make easier viewing.
