I have so many questions for you. I do have trich--and i feel SO alone.
But today, I found all these videos on youtube about people with trich, and Wow.
I feel like us people with trich could learn a lot from each other--i've never even tried the tangle toy thing or anything like hypnotherapy, so thats something new for me---if you ever want any help with learning how to pull out LESS hair(i know how you feel, it never stops--thats why i just lessen it so that the hair loss is slower)i'm here.
i dont pull my hair out to that extent i just like pull out the hair at the end..but recently the chunks have gotten bigger...this video inspired me to stop though.
hmm i find i pull on the top of my head where my partin is, and my fringe, just because its easy to spot which ones are good ones to pull. but anyways im so glad for all these trich videos on youtube i thought i was alone, thankyouu :)
So I've had trich since 1st grade and I'm a freshman now. My mom decided to get an exchange student, and turns out, he has it too! I see him a lot playing with his hair, as I do when I pull. He's the 2nd person I've met in real life with it!:D
This made me cry. You're absolutely beautiful Rebecca. If I could trade lives with you, if only for a week, I would. If I could relieve this pain for you.... that sounds weird coming from a complete stranger. I hope things look up for you.
Such a well done vid wow you make a very bright and talented impression - I think you'll do well in life with or without pulling your hair ;) I do hope you find a way of coping with whatever is causing it better, maybe cognitive behaviour therapy or something?! Good luck
You're amazing for being able to show this to the world .__.
When I was like 9 or 10 i always used to pull out my hair, just strand by strand and it never showed because I did it a little bit just as a habit, plus I have a LOT of hair.
I did that for a really long time but i stopped. Idk how or why, I just did.
Now I ALWAYS twist my hair and I can't help it and my mom tells me not to because it apparently damages/pulls it out.
I never thought much of it but now I'll try to stop.
i dont have trich but i have a schizotypal personality disorder you have no idea how many times people asked me why i cant just act normal i feel your pain
i think you are very brave, you help me understand things people go through and i hope one day it will get better it just takes time,i really admire you honestly
i think you are so brave with everything u have been though:) i hope you get better and hope you are okay. you are not alone there are plenty of people with it so dont be embarrassed :)
i remember times my mom use to yell at me telling me to stop but i couldnt.. she would tell me that she has never heard of someone doiing such things.. i know it sound mean but she didnt mean it that way.. she just really wants me to stop and it frustrates her i guess.. i have been doing it for almost 6 years now..
i did this...SO MUCH it started elementary...i noticed the bald spot...so did other kids...yeah...it was at the top of my head....i did stop..before middle school, but it was replaced with me picking at acne and scabs on my face...i still do but not as destructive as in middle school...but it does hurt...i don't know if it has a seprate name...but it's definately there... i wish i could stop like with my hair....still hasn't happened .
I pull. and I pull. and I just keep pulling. I don't know how long I've pulled. But I'm not worried about what will happen in the future. I'm worried what people will think. I'm so glad too know I'm not alone.
i have it.. i cry every day :"( everyone makes fun of me at school so i wear a hat .. im gonna take therpy .. and i eat my hair to so health promblems too :"( ....
hey i don't have it but i wanted to tell you that maybe you should try hypnosis. I also wanted to tell you that the people that get mad at you about also have there own problems in life cause we are only human. Hope your problem with your hair get solved
I have hair that's really long.. not ridiculously long, but pretty damn long haha and i'm doing that with my hair.. my friends are always saying 'why do you never let go of your hair?!' and i never actually realise that im doing it to be honest.. im only 11 years old so i hope it doesnt get any worse when im older:// nice video!! <3<3
Oddly enough, my name is Rebecca too and I have the same problem. The only thing that worked for me for a little while was my laziness. I went to a specialist and he said everytime I pull my hair out I must write it down in a log and write what I was thinking, what the time was, how many hairs I pulled out, and so on. I'm incredibly lazy and didn't want to write that down every five minutes, so I just stopped pulling. I started again though when I stopped seeing him.
You are my idol. I really look up to you, you are brave and cool. I does not have trichotillomania, but I can't stop touching my hair .. It's probably because it's so soft XXD
all i know is ive been pulling strands of my hair since i was 11. i dont know why. its not as bad as yours i think? i have my hair up all the time and miss how thick and long my hair use to be.
i do that ALL the time. i twirl my hair around my fingers and two fingers, sometimes even all of my hair through my fist!!!! i dont have any bold spots YET but my hair just really like falls loose in the shower for example or when i brush my hair really a lot of hair falls of. my friends all hate when i do that in class and my mom hates when i sit on the couch watching a movie and the couch is full of hair!!!
its not as bad as this one and all best wishes for you and hugs and kisses!
Watching this, you suggested people may be thinking, "oh I am doing this to myself." The only thing I thought while watching this, is I wish I could hug you because you can see how much this hurts you, and you don't deserve to be going through this.
All the hugs and thoughtful words will not help but -
I hope one day, something really helps. I truly truly hope.
i'm not going to say in full honesty that i believe i have a form of trich, but watching your video and your symptoms i see that i have something like it. when i was younger i would always pull out the thicker strands of hair at the top of my head for no reason and i'd always be fiddling with it. now i have stopped pulling out full strands of hair, but i have started ripping off split ends. idk but i can't stop touching my hair or messing with it wherever i go...it's habitual :/
Aw you poos thing! You are gorgeous no matter what othher people think! It shouldn't be treated as a bad thing because it's not!!! Stay strong lovely!
My hair grows pretty slowly and now that I think about it maybe it's because I actualy am pulling out hair? Or maybe I'm being paranoid. It hasn't gotten worse over the years, well at least I don't think it has, but how do I know if I have Trich? How do I know it;s Trich or if I just like to play with my hair? please help.
Hi. I don't have trich. Well at least I think I don't. This video kinda freaked me out. Not in a bad way. I think you're so brave to do this. But then you showed how you did it when you were younger, like you twirled it. I'm 14, and I've been twirling my hair since I was a baby. Not pulling, just twirling.
Hey, I don't have Trich, but i thought you should know, I think it is very brave and courageous of you to make a video about your condition. I was not aware of trich and i just wanna say thank you for making this video. I hope it gets better, im sure you will. and your really pretty.
I have Trich, where I pull out my eyelashes. they dont come back, or if they do they are very light. I sometimes wear fake eyelashes to cover up the patches of no eyelashes. I eventually got an infection from pulling them out and it stopped me, until the infection was cleared, I was pulling them out again. Thank you for making me feel like I'm not the only one, and beckie, you're beautiful no matter what!
Hello. I'm 14, i'm called Saphire Addams and I think people like you are needed in this world. You're brilliant, amazing, I respect you so much, and so should everyone else. You're beautiful inside and out, without hair or with hair. You have inspired me more than anyone could, and I can't tell you enough how much you deserve too be happy.
since i was a baby i pulled and played with my hair.EVERYTHING in this video made since to me.i am 17 and i did research for the first time last night. i showed my mom and she is talking about getting me help.i want to try the psycology or what ever it is.i watched this video and in the time it took me to log in to youtube and for it to direct me here i found myself typing with my right hand and pulling with my left.i do this a lot in school and i have had friends for years and i never told
@HinaNaru65 them out of embarrassment..i don't think i'll ever tell them. i went over to my neighbors house once and the folowing weekend i went back over and she asked me if something happened to my hair bc there was that much of a difference in my hair in just 7 days... i cry a lot about it in privite and i know what you mean by being jealous of other girl. and bc of this it hhas lowered my self confidence. when we get the money i want to go to the dr to make sure this is what i have.
I have trich. Except I don't pull out my head hair,I pull out my eyelashes...but it's getting better and I felt like I was the only on doing it and I found out about it in 4th grade!!!! Ur very brave for making this vid and it's awesome that u made it in engaland!!!!!!!
I don't have trich & I feel weird for commenting but I want to let you know that I think you are so brave & courageous for making this video. You are a beautiful girl and I want to thank you for this video. I hope you continue to make more videos to inform people about trich & I would very much like to see them (:
i have trich but i pull out my leg hair and i know exactly how you feel. its the worst feeling ever. im not able to wear lots of skirts or shorts without people asking me why i have so many scabs on my legs. my mom trys to ground me when she finds out that ive been plucking my hair. she just doesnt understand that i cant stop. my friends who i have told dont really make much of it and theyre completely fine with it. but when my family or other people at school know i just want to break down.
I think i hat trich :C I dont really pull it out but my hands are on it 24/7! im ot kidding, i have to at using one hand because i cant stop messing with my hair its so annoying :\ i cant stop...I CANT STOP :C
It's such a shame with GORGEOUS hair like yours. i can see why you would always be touching it, etc.! anyway, youre really pretty and look kinda like my best friend (random).. but dont let people get you down! you look kinda like a movie star :D
have you ever tried playing with like yarn or something? because it doesnt make noise, and you don't have to get a bright color. and also its soft like hair

Beckie, Don't ever think that you are not beautiful. even if all those people throw mean words at you, because even if you have no hair, you can still be beautiful on the inside, and thats what counts...i know its hard to not believe what everyone is saying, trust me, but if you do, you can wake up smiling...I hope this helped...if not then well inbox me or whatever if you need anything:3
I just wanted to say that this video really did touch my heart. I hope that by now in 2012 things are a little easier for you! I came across your video because of another girl on youtube "@courtneypants" mentioned she had trich and I was curious as to what it was. I struggle with my weight as courtney did and her weightloss videos are very helpful and inspirational to me so I was thinking maybe talking to her about trich may help you. Good luck!!!
P.S. (additional to last entry) I had to make a new youtube account to get away from the bully on youtube. I forgot to mention that earlier. Youtube would shut him down but it was a big group of cyber bullies and there's power in numbers when it comes to terrorizing folks.
I didn't even know there was a word for what I do, but I pull my hair out in little pieces at a time on the side of my head. In the front where everyone can see it. I can't even sit down and read a book without it happening... ): it drives me crazy when my mother asks why or when she tells me to just stop. I don't know what to do about it...
i dont have trich, but i self-injure. i know its not the same, but i just wanted to let u know that u do understand to an extent, my heart reaches out to you. dont give up. stopping is possible, u have to believe it though.
@ConverseFan7000 Because she couldn't help but take them off. And anyway, you can't wear mittens all the time. It would look silly, too, which is not better. After everything she tried, she's not cured, so, I don't think mittens would change anything.
I have ocd and i do silly stuff like that too so i know what you mean with the not being able to stop. For example i fell the need to hold my breath or something horrid with happen to me and i tell mydelf that it is silly but have to do what it tells me to do. its hard to explain but at least know i understand
Just wanted to say that you are not alone, although I completely understand that it feels that way... I pull out my eyelashes, and I really wish I didn't, because I'm sixteen now and I just want to be able to wear mascara and look pretty with it... Anyway, I wanted to thank you for putting this up and making me understand my trich a bit more, and I hope you will eventually stop feeling the urges... greetings from the Netherlands ;)
Hey. My name is Alexandra, Im 12 years old, (6th grader) and I have Trichotillomania also. You probibly can't belive this but my own mother makes fun of my Trichotillomania. She calls me her little eyebrow because I only have one eyebrow and it hurts me so bad. Nobody at my school makes fun of me but my own mother yes. I don't mind those people who call me different. I CANT HELP I HAVE Trichotillomania! I just wish people felt the way that I always feel. You're not alone. <3
My name is Alexandra. I am 10 years old and I have Trichotillomainia. I honestly thought that I did it because I was bored. My Mother used to and still does make fun of me because I have it which gets me angry so I lock myself in the bathroom and pull out my eyenrow hair. I wish my mother would have never found out because it just makes me want to shave my head completly. I hope that one day my mother will respect me for who I truly am. Good Luck and I hope they find a cure soon =(.

For me, it started after my parents got divorced and I changed schools. I pulled out my hair till there was a bald spot right on the top. After that I pulled out my eyelashes, because it was less noticeable. Now I've had trich for about 10 years and continue to struggle with it. Sometimes I pull out my eyebrows but not as bad because people notice it. Now I sell cosmetics in hopes that might get me to stop for my business. My brother doesn't understand I can't just stop. What do I tell him?
Hey Rebecca. I'm also called Rebeca (spelled that way cause its spanish) and i'm also from the uk. I have Trichotillomania too! I've been wondering for ages what it was, and if i was the only one! Thank you so much for explaining.
Mine's not as bad as yours, and its only on the top of my head, but thank you so much for explaining to me, and helping me to explain to people why i can't stop twiddling my hair :')
I've been pulling my eyebrows out since I was a kid. It was BAaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaD when I was younger. I had NOOOOO eyebrow hair in 5th grade. i'm 23 now, its not as bad. I stop for a long time and my eyebrows grew back. I get the urge to pull em and I do, but not as much.
there are periods of time where i stop too and they grow back and then i pull them out again. it really a constant battle and feels nearly impossible to stop..
I have it too. I pull out my eyelashes and i dont even notice i pull out my hair not as much as my eyelashes but when i pull out my hair i look for the black ones. And i hear all the time 'she doesn't have eyelashes' and it hurts. My mom is all like 'stop' i say....mom i can't i literally cant...it really sucks... /:
Hi i just wanna say to you i have the same thing but only when i'm stressed what i love to do id trying to let it grow long and then cut loads off. When i pull it out you realy see it because it's like yanking it out , sow doing it in publik is a nono that's my vice happy i can hold it in till i get home. You know when i was a kid i used to suck on my huge ponytale then in middle schooli had a fight and someone pulled a huge shunk out i made me feel sow much beter i've been doing since. evelien
I don't have this but my friend does (I think). We've never talked about it but watching her do it makes me really uncomfortable. How do I talk to her about it? Or should I ignore it?
I have had Tricotillomania since I was 14 which was only 4 years ago. It has gotten worse. After pulling from my scalp, i started just recently with my eyebrows and eyelashes. I have no eyebrows but I have managed to grow my eyelashes back except at some stages i find myself tugging at them. I have been trying very hard to grow my hair back on my scalp, by using shampoo and hair treatment that has Keratin in it which helps hair to grow faster.
But then I have one stressful day were I find myself with a big chunk of hair in my hands. I have one bald patch that is under my fringe and not very big so not many people can see it which is a good thing except i get worried about making it worse everyday!! The stress of doing year 12 is only making it worse!!!
Even my friends made fun of me. One kid even said (directly to me, and then everyone else) that the only reason I didn't have eyelashes was because they were burned off. I still have trichotillomania and I don't think that it will ever stop for me. I am now in 7th grade and I still get made fun of because I have huge spots where my eyelashes are missing and being caught pulling my hair
I've had trichotillomania for about 4 years. The first 2 years or so, I was only pulling out my eyelashes. But now I have also been pulling out parts of my hair (and I still pull a lot out from my eyelashes). I don't just pull out random parts though, I pull out hair that's usually darker and straighter from the rest. I remember in 5th grade when I started pulling out my eyelashes until it was noticeable, how everyone would make fun of me because half of my eyelashes were gone on each side. Eve
I didn't know I had Trich until I saw this video. I pull my hair everyday, all the time. Its a constant battle and an everyday challenge. You're right. Its hard to stop. You can't stop. It hurts emotionally and physically when you see that you have done that to yourself. Because of your informational videos like this with your bubbly personality, people with Trichotillomania learn to accept themselves. They find peace and know they are not alone. I praise you for it.
I pull out my hair in class and twiddle with it and even at dinner. It's not that bad. I pull mostly from the crown and side burns and front part sometimes the very back but rarely.
I AM SOOOOO SORRY! I went to click on LIKE and clicked on DISLIKE instead!!! I click on LIKe afterwards.. Not sure if it does a difference... So sorry!
It must be so difficult being girl and having it. I'm a boy and I have it. but it doesn't attracted many girls. One time I sh*t you not, my friends said to me it looked like i just out of an insane asylum, i laughed but deep down inside my heart was crushed and I wanted to kill myself.
I have tourettes symdrome and I know how you feel, just let me tell you never let anyone doubt yourself and @iTeets you have it down pat could not think of a better way to describe impulsive symdromes/disorders other then adding its like hiccups.
You.Are.Beautiful. Never forget that. I look up to you for being so open and going through this like you have and being able to show how you feel about this. Thank you.
I beat it!!! It takes time and determination but it can be done. Thankyou for you candid message. You haven't shared the catalyst as I'm sure you can't. Trich commonly starts in pubescent girls who have suffered trauma. Mine was sexual abuse. Stay strong beautiful girl.
I know this video is almost three years old, and there are many comments, and you probably won't see this, but I've watched quite a few of your videos the past two days and have been brought to tears numerous times. I am so sorry you've had to endure what you've had to endure. You're a beautiful human being and I am so happy you exist in this world. You're beautiful with a full head of hair, a thinning head of hair, no hair, some hair, whatever. You are beautiful.Iwant to hug you, but I'minNY :(
You do deserve sympathy because you are a person with feelings. ;) Its a very emotional painful disorder to have to live with. But hopefully it will get a little easier for you to deal with. Have you taken any medications for anxiety to try calm the urges? Idk if that works but I've read somewhere before that might be another option... stay strong ;)
I have trich as well. I've had it since my freshman year of high school (6 years). I remember having bald patches at the bottom left and right of the back of my head. It's so hard to stop. I keep on telling myself, oh, this is going to be the last hair I pull, but I've said that millions of times. I'm thankful that I still have a majority of my hair, but when I get stressed out, it gets bad. I just can't stop myself. My parents get upset with me when I do it. I just want to know how to stop.
I always touch my hair all the time. I can understand why you cant stop. I have a hard time, when i do my hair up, not touching it and i switch it up and down and side to side constantly. I dont pull it out though. i mostly just run my fingers threw it, thought my hair falls out anyway cuz ive done a lot of damage to it in the past few years with die and such. So I can understand where you're comming from :)
what if you shaved your hair a wore a wig? Sorry if im being insensitive here but im just curious of what you would do in that situation. Perhaps if you wore a wig?
they had empty patches and i hated it too. Now i pick at the ends of my hair and tear pieces off (i call it my get rid of your dead ends strategy lol). Stay strong
I have trich too. My mom has had trich for as long as i remember. I'm not sure if trich is solely genetic or there is an nurture aspect to it as well, but I developed trich as stress started to seep into my life during my last year of highschool and throughout my college life (right now still). For me, its mostly my eyebrows (like my mother) and my eyelashes. At first it was just my eyebrows, ill twirl them and then just pull. Then i hated how thin they were and moved on to my eyelashes and
something it would be a qualified, experienced hypnotherapist that specializes in ocd and other, similar disorders. (qualified hypnotherapists are the ones that have legitamate certifications and most importantly, a medical degree. for example psychologist, doctor, even dentist)
oh hon, of coarse you cant help it, why would anyone voluntarily pull out their hair. your young, gorgeous, smart, and have a great personality. you have so much going for you, please dont give up on yourself! for anyone with trich, i dont claim to be an expert, but if i could suggest
i have the same problem except its with my eyebrows and eylasheses but i noticed thats im starting to do what you do twirl my hair but then end up pulling it out ...its hard to stop
im going to be 15 in march. and my hair is staring to grow back and there was a point where i couldnt wear all my hair down like most high school girls could. but, now im figuring out how to striaghten it so its flat again... but, im scared it will come back again... i only told 2 people; 2 of my friends. everyone else thinks i burnt it out with a straightner bc im obsessed w/ straighting my hair. im scared its going to come back..... i really hope that it doesnt come back everrrr.... im scared.
I'm recovering from this. I nipped it in the bud and told my parents and got into therapy before it got WAY beyond repair. I don't intentionally pull anymore.
I have trich, i pull out my hair too, and becca is right. people need to understand, its not something you can simply stop. you could tie my hands behind my back and i can promise you i would break my own bones to pull out my hair.
ITS NOT SOMETHING YOU CAN STOP, simply, atleast.
3 years of counseling got me to stop, and its acting back up again.
@beckie0 Exactly. Hair is just hair, I have Trich and who cares!? You and I can do a billion and six things no one else can. You are one of the best artists I've ever seen, make amazing videos, and are so thoughtful and insightful. You are my role model.
i also have tritch, i pull out my eyebrows and eyelashes, i dont notice it... but all my friends attempt to stop e when i do, my eyelashes grow back but i have this random blad spot near the end of my eyebrow and it is very embaressing... so i've stopped for a while and i did everything i could to get my mind off of it, so now i wrestle at my school and i couldn't be happier, thank you for making this video, it made me feel like less of a freak :) <3
I have trich too. I pull out my eyelashes as long as I can remember and I pull out my hair too. I only pull out the hairs thar have a different texture then the other hairs on my head. I was born with blonde hair, but I have pitchblack hairs growing between them, and I only pull out the black ones.
I have a bald spot in between my eyelashes and it's very noticable when I wear mascara. I just want full lashes :/
What's the name of the site? I have a rare form of trich, I pull out my eyelashes. I've tried everything from sitting on my hands to wearing gloves to keep myself from pulling and nothing works. I've had it for two years now, and my mom says they might not grow back.....so if you can tell me the site, that would be great, thanks <3
Thank you so much for making this video. I suffer from trichotillomania and trichophagia and I don't know how but having them has completely drained whatever motivation I had in me. I spend so much time trying to fix my hair, I've dyed it blue, pink, purple, white blonde, just to try and make myself feel better. It doesn't work. But your video is amazing and you are so brave for talking about it so openly (: I know no one who actually has trich and this connected to me so much, thank you <3 xxxx
I just wanted to comment and let you know how touched I was by your video. I was on youtube looking for ways to stop pikcing at my acne. I'm 24 and I'm so jealous that all my freinds are rid of it and I just can't help touching it and making me look like I'm 13.
I found this vid. You have no idea how you move me. I can completly understand how it feels to do something you don't want to do at all and at times not be aware of it.
Good luck. I'll definitely try watching more of you.
I am watching here with my girlfriend and we share the opinion that your courage to go before the camera and expressing your anger, your despair and your inability to control is most admirable and will encourage others to do so. To my mind a dirorder cant't be dealt with in the realm of reason or argument, punishment or stretegy. To my mind it is something you have to accept as a part of your own and try to cope with it in some manner. Your way to express your feelings like this is such a way :)
I touch my hair a lot too. I don't pull it out but I know how it is to not even realize that you're touching your hair. It just happens, I know. People found me annoying too when I was playing around with my hair during classes.
I wish you all the best! I subscribed some weeks ago and I really like your videos. Lots of love!
I have had trichotillomania for 6 years and im now 13, it really means a lot that you would even make such a video because it's very Inpirational for people, thank you! ;)
Thank you...I have had Trich mildly for several years, to various degrees. Mines even a little more embarrassing...I actually eat the root after I pull. But thank you for coming out about it. It really helps to know that someone else gets as jealous of those long, thick-haired girls as I do..:')
Holy shit... you are so beautiful. No make up or anything, you look so beautiful and your voice.
Shit I don't even care if you were bald or are bald now. I'd date you and I'd show you off to the entire world and do it damn proudly. Haven't dated in years and I planned to get my life on a track I like before I even thought about it but I'd drop this stupid goal to date you.
And that is the truth. Out of everyone who uses this account, this is Chris. You crying made me tear up, none of that! Smile!
Lol my keyboard is covered in hair too! You make perfect sense. I just can't stop it!

I started again though when I stopped seeing him.

i do that ALL the time. i twirl my hair around my fingers and two fingers, sometimes even all of my hair through my fist!!!! i dont have any bold spots YET but my hair just really like falls loose in the shower for example or when i brush my hair really a lot of hair falls of. my friends all hate when i do that in class and my mom hates when i sit on the couch watching a movie and the couch is full of hair!!!
its not as bad as this one and all best wishes for you and hugs and kisses!

@ConverseFan7000 Because she couldn't help but take them off. And anyway, you can't wear mittens all the time. It would look silly, too, which is not better. After everything she tried, she's not cured, so, I don't think mittens would change anything.

I have had Tricotillomania since I was 14 which was only 4 years ago. It has gotten worse. After pulling from my scalp, i started just recently with my eyebrows and eyelashes. I have no eyebrows but I have managed to grow my eyelashes back except at some stages i find myself tugging at them. I have been trying very hard to grow my hair back on my scalp, by using shampoo and hair treatment that has Keratin in it which helps hair to grow faster.

Eve

It hurts emotionally and physically when you see that you have done that to yourself.

3 years of counseling got me to stop, and its acting back up again.
its not something that simply goes away. e.e
get that shiz right.

@beckie0 Exactly. Hair is just hair, I have Trich and who cares!? You and I can do a billion and six things no one else can. You are one of the best artists I've ever seen, make amazing videos, and are so thoughtful and insightful. You are my role model.

Smile!

You want to stop, but you can't because it's like breathing, blinking, sleeping, eating.
It's programmed into you so deep that you don't think about doing it until you've already done it.
