The flute solo gives the song a more calm feeling in the beginning, It better complements the clarinets sound. Music is like that, where if you don't like the sound of a certain section you tweak it to better fit you and the people who are interpreting the music.
omg, this was a bit too fast. the flutes were beasts w/ that vibrato tho, nice. some parts of this song is just hell to keep in tune n that tenor's sound was too light, jazzy, n harsh for that solo, a euphonium, or even better a French horn should have done it. but most of the time, u guys were pretty good at this song =)
Yikes Gang - there is SO MUCH music in this piece. Where is the phrase direction...the rubato.....the sensitivity that the composition screams for? Remember that we can get a machine to reproduce notes and rhythms, but it takes living, breathing, thinking, FEELING human beings to make MUSIC. Perhaps this was not a good repertoire choice for the group, especially with the missing soloists and general difficulty with playing soft.......
no oboe solo....tenor sax substituting for the euphonium...brass' intonation was a little effy...still a good performance...would have carried over the phrases a little more some parts lol ok ill stop
Maybe it was the recording device but it sounded like there were major tuning problems. Also as soon as I heard a flute playing the oboe solo I knew I wasn't going to like it. The person playing the euphonium solo needs to add more musicality. That person made the solo very stiff and it sounded like a robot was playing it.
WAY TOO FAST! NO OBOE SOLO! and this doesnt seem like a gold winning performance to me. No way.

@cj1lorenz it indeed was a level 500 gold win for us that year :)
our conductor had always liked to take things a bit faster than usual, but we had eric come in and gust conduct at our band retreat!
greatest memory of my life was when the clouds parted as the piece was reaching the climax when we were playing this at nationals :)

@Kazeraida oopsies, this is 2008, not 2005, haha!
but all the same, carpenter (the conductor) likes taking things fast.
and I think it was a 600 level win in 2008.

At least have a Tuba or french horn do the solo....my god...that was awful...a sax just isn't the same.

good job guys! I'm so proud of you all for getting gold at musicfest!
listening to this brings back memories of when I played it with the Bethune band a couple of years ago =)

It was alright....but only that.
Our all-county JUNIOR HIGH band played this much better. But it's a huge county with like 27 (?) huge school districts that try out.

@mayfouk223 we didn't have an oboe player at our school, as no one was equipped to learn it in elementary school before high school! :(
