@KILLAHgreenmonkey It is possible your GPU does not support opencl 1.1. Find you graphics card name then do some google searches. I use a Nvidia GPU which uses CUDA instead of OpenCL and that works just as well.
@DCBloodHound Go to the Render tab (looks like a camera in Blender 2.6) and go to The Integrator section. Change the value under preview (real time editing) or Render (for final renders)
The GPU/CPU option moved to the User Preferences->System Tab section. "None" will use the CPUs only. Select "CUDA" or "OpenCL" and an option list for GPU Compute and CPU Compute will appear under the Render->Render options.
@aardvark1111 hello, I just downloaded the new 2.61 version. there under the render tab, the render option, you can have the "feature set". I think the default set is "supported". if you choose the "experimental", you can have the "OpenCL GPU" and "CPU" option. I tried to change it to GPU but the blender collapsed. don't know why.....
Woohoo! ... got cycles to work with my GPU on Ubuntu Maverick 64 after installing about a dozen dependencies .... Well, Cycles renders look a bit similar to LuxRender, but take far less time, cool! Nice to have GPU rendering working with Cycles, but it only shaved 2 seconds off the render time of the default scene of two Suzanne heads from 8 seconds to 6 .... pretty sure that will translate to bigger time savings the more complex the scene. The best feature is the real-time rendering, sweet!
To all wondering where the CPU/GPU option is - make sure you are in the cycles render engine mode. Go to the Render button. Under the first section (Render) look for the Feature Set Option and choose Experimental. A new option should immediately show up called Device. This lets you choose between the GPU or the CPU.
sorry please ignore earlier post about cycles and iteration I have found it, it was hiding under Integrator, but still cannot locate CPU / GPU options, that may be because I am using a laptop I do not know
I am new to Blender and epecially cycles, I have downloaded 64bit Blender 2.61 however I cannot change the number of renders in cycles it appears to be fixed at 10 iterations, where can I change this? I have followed this tutorial but the options for CPU and GPU are not there either
You would need either blender 2.61 or blendeder 2.6 from GRAPHICS(dot)org. because blenders official release of blender 2.60 din't have the cycles option. However, now blender 2.61 is out i would reccoment to download it.
@TcupProductions Cycles is built in to blender 2.6 which you can download for free at Blender.org. Cycles is part of the rendering system. It will always be there, even when you don't use it.
why when I put open cl+gpu in cycles it saids: failed loading render kernel, see console for errors. I have a gtx 460. do you have a cycles version that works where i can download for windows 7 32bits
Andrew - I'm running v2.6 on both my windows and linux boxes, and tried 64 and 32 bit versions on the windows machine - no version has cycles either in the pulldown or in the addons list.
Do I have to run a daily build or something to get it?
This is the most current update, but it's not packaged and distributed on the blender website.
I believe it's only available in zip format (no exe or dmg) but you just save the whole folder and double click on the blender.exe file (windows) or just open the application for mac. Sorry, not a linux person, but I'd assume it's similar.
@robosloth333 Thanks -- I did end up finding it eventually. If you go to graphicall(.)org you can download a build for your platform that has cycles and various other packages built in. It works great! Though unfortunately, under linux (even with an nvidia card) I don't seem to have access to the gpu rendering version. It just goes black when I try - but cpu still works fine, and uses all 8 of my cores, so it's no so bad.
Oh! Thanks Andrew! Now I can watch this... I couldn't watch this @ Vimeo, I don't know but somehow I have very low connectivity when it comes to Vimeo even though HD/HQ is disabled..
It says I need opencl version 1.1 when apparently I have 1.0 when i try to render with the gpu. does anyone know where I can get it from?

@westhehedgehog16 The newest official blender release (2.61) had cycles and is for both mac and windows. The settings should be very similar.

@OpticalVampire I mean - the 64 bit linux and 32 & 64 bit windows machine are all missing Cycles.

Do a google search for Blender Daily Build
You need to find a download of blender 2.60.4
This is the most current update, but it's not packaged and distributed on the blender website.
I believe it's only available in zip format (no exe or dmg) but you just save the whole folder and double click on the blender.exe file (windows) or just open the application for mac. Sorry, not a linux person, but I'd assume it's similar.
Hope this helps
Have fun with cycles!
