I'm not to far from Lakewood either. I was so happy that Ben was able to attend the interview in 2000 before he passed away, they all looked like they were friends again....watch The Cars video "You are the Girl" and you will see something very strange.... The girl on the monitor at the beginning holds up a calendar saying APRIL 2000. Which happens to be the month that Ben was diagnosed with terminal cancer. Very odd but true.
The Cars have stood the test of time -- they are CLASSIC ROCK now! As a 41 year old wife and mom, I still drive around with music blaring out my open windows. Nothing like a little "Candy-O" to jump start the Route 93/Woburn commute. Other drivers give a thumbs up -- for those that don't like ... too bad.
She looks like Glenn Close from the movie Fatal Attraction. Just an opinion, as Ocasek mentioned in a radio interview that jeolousy played a part in the breakup of the Cars, also the making of Lace. I think Ben got caught in the middle of a tug-of-war.
@baltimoreblitz16 It's called Stay the Night, Benjamin's only solo hit off the Lace album he wrote with his fiance Diane Page. All the songs were written about their six-year relationship until she finally left him in 1990. You should hear and see the whole video. It's beautiful.
Great interview. Thanks for posting. I too thought he two voices were very similar, and were easily confused. Any way you slice them, they were on the best 80s bands. RIP Ben.
Yeah this is just all Ric talking. Interesting, but Ben was always my favorite....he's the reason I really dug the band and their music. When Ric said he was attracted to men too, did he mean sexually attracted? : / Ben's voice is so beautiful.
Which one is which? Is Benjamin the deeper voice? I cannot tell who is talking where. I should be able to because I really like Benjamin. Could someone clear it up for me, thank you so much.
This interview is of Ric only. Even though it's stated above that it's a interview with both Ben and Ric. To my ears it's just Ric taken from various interviews. Ben, I think didn't do too many interviews. He was quiet and didn't like the limelight too much.
@drumdude1000 I was also under the impression that this was also just Ric talking... didn't hear Ben anywhere in this interview... or do they really sound that much alike when they talk to? lol and I thought I recognized Ben's voice instantaneously :)
Interviews like this are priceless. To hear Ric speak so candidly about writing and how some of their best songs were created. Drive was written into a hotel room in Chicago? Never would have thought that. This is a glimpse into the genious of a talented musician and songwriter.
Do you really think that Ric's relaxed attitude about who got to sing which song (Ben or him) is really how it was? I hear and read too much about a kind of competition over lead vocals. Interesting.. I do think Ric's comment over Ben's ability on the song "Drive" where Ric says, "I couldn't sing that great." All is forgiven now :)
Great interview to give such a good insight to the unpretentious approach to the lead vocals. Ric and Ben not either trying to be the STAR. They both shone brightly for not trying to steal the spotlight. Thank you guys for making my favorite band ever. R&R Hall of Fame should be shamed for not having these guys in their hall. They are, no doubt, in my Hall of Fame.
Ric wrote most of the hits, Ben sang most of the hits to get them the noticed. Ric is great, Ben was great. Why try to bash anyone. This band was/is/and will always be one of the best ever. Period.
i live in lakewood ohi0 where ben orr was born...i moved here a while ago and i just so happen to be a bass player..Drive is a song that really tears at my heart..i know it was writen about the end of a relationship..but i always saw it as some one who is not well"thinking nothings wrong" whos going to take care of them if they dont take care of themselves..RIP ben orr..this 2009 i hope to pay some tribute to ben orr right here in lakewood
when he died? Of what n how old was he already? Sorry 2 hear what happen but this was 1 of the best song i listen bacc in my younger yrs...he'll missed then
"You Might Think" was definitely one of the most famous songs and had probably the most famous music video from 1984. There was only Ric there and he was knows pretty good by people. I actually thought for a really long time that Ric Ocasek sang all the song of The Cars. I didn't know Ben and I listened only to "Heartbeat City" at the time :) Some time later I found "It's Not The Night" live video and was amazed how two perfectly two of them look together, not to mention the rest of The CARS! ;)
I really love how Ric talked about writing, in general. I have always felt the same way - I've been writing for years and it's nothing that can be done on command. It's emotional and not always perfect, it's just something you do when you feel it's right.
no problem! i would love incredibly much if The Cars would've made the 1988 album... <:C!!! Imagine - new video clips from 1988 and new live performances AND new GREAT SONGS! :)!!

What I like about the Cars is: they had two lead singers. I love bands like that!

Ric was attracted to unattractive men? Ha ha, guess Ben didn't have to worry.

Ric has been married to a supermodel for 30 years - not doing too bad.
