On the Channel Nine coverage of the Aust v India test in Perth a few weeks ago, the commentators were talking about Mark Waugh's six of Vettori and they actually drew on the screen one of those lines that measures distances of sixes. Apparently they also did a bit of trigonometry to estimate where the ball would have landed. I think they measured Mark Waugh's at about 110m. I reckon their estimate is better than my previous one, as I had forgotten all my high school maths.

The imperial system is a far superior system if you are using maths in your everyday work. 12 is divisable by 1,2,3,4,6,and 12 (and 8 and 9 witha bit of thought). 10 is only divisible by 1,2 5 and 10. The outcome of this is that fractions and mental arithmatic are much easier with the base 12 system.

@oz1john , ur probably right, although mark waughs shot went very high (maybe 63 degrees to the gound) as u can tell from the landing and bounce of the ball when it lands on the roof. this also went very high (maybe about 55 degrees to the gound) and the wind carried it as a result a lot longer / further ... but thats part of the skill to 'time' the shot... using wind or the pitches bounce.. credit batsman! the best shot is hit at about 46 degrees like in comp games or javelin /shot put throws.

@tmtv633 i think the metric system is far better because it mathematically makes more sense. with the imperial system you have things such as 12 inches make 1 foot and 3 feet make one yard, one mile is 1600m etc. its very disorganised and non-simplistic. the metric system works in 10s, 100s and 1000s making it easy. 100cm = 1m, 1000m = 1km. just much easier to use and more effective. :P
