  • "What's My Line" is such a charming series.

  • Absolutely delightful!!

  • I wonder if she is still living?

  • ...from the first look you could say a nun...

  • I am at present, a non-believer....however, I am touched by the sincerity and warmth of this good woman...

  • Life was so simple then...lovely:). High speed drill with water jet as coolant...wow...novelty!!!

  • Those new, power drills ... Screw the world without those! Thank god Im only 23

  • aw. I bet she was a good dentist. =p

  • I totally agree with you, califhartley2010, that we should all lead by example. I definitely work hard to do so.................... and will continue to do so. Thanks for your tip. Wish some people could be more open to take constructive criticism without getting so offended, too. So much profanity and vulgarity these days. Oooops sounding too old! :-)

  • Telling a nun to be honest O.o

  • It staggers me that a dialogue like this exists on a link that's entertaining. When the four panel members here stand to shake the sister's hand, it's a sign of fine manners and respect. The nun's behaviour, too, is humble - there's no proselytising, nor no need to be correct.

The most dangerous people alive today are those who do everything in the so-called "name of God".

  • @judah71 Most of the people who died in the 20th century died at the hands of atheistic regimes....Soviet communism and Nazism.

  • The panel rose for Elanor Rooselvelt, this nun, for Bishop Sheen and Dorothy's father.

  • John gave Bennett too much information.

  • There were about 200,000 Sisters in the U.S. in 1960. Now there are about 50,000.

  • I wonder if she remained a Nun for the remainder of her life. So many ended-up leaving.

  • @trschaefer thanks to lberals in the church and the rules they corrupted after Vatican -2

  • What's that Bennett? Somewhere in their mouse? lol

  • Most communities of Sisters began transitioning out of the habit around 1967.

  • It was women religous who build many schools and hospitals in our country.

  • Absolutely. Though she's not as scary as some nuns I've known. She's probably no longer a dentist, but still a nun...if she's still even alive.

And there are still some very strict nuns out there but you never see them because they're most often cloistered.

  • @lajmh I went through 16 years of Catholic school. Most of the nuns I knew were not scary. Back in the old days nuns had to teach classes of 40 to 50 students. They had to be a bit scary to keep their classrooms under control.

  • @ Shanniquitie Because lawyers defend the rotten

  • @vkorchnoifan Jewish Lawyers......

  • @Valkonnen yes jews and liberal aethist. Too bad these commies also infiltrated the Catholic church and destroyed everything. See the prophecy of Bella Dodd. Also, please note how the liberals destroyed the very root of our american culture by getting rid of God in schools and incorporating liberal ideas. That is why we have trash on TV and radio. When compromise is made on morality, we have a decadent society. I hope things change for the better or we are in serious trouble.

  • @calihartley2010

Liberal ideas like the preference for the poor, and the hatred of the rich? Liberal ideas like those? Oh no wait, Jesus was the one espousing those ideas.

  • @cauchamar Jesus did not say hate the rich. By the way, prefering the poor and giving them what they want, has that made them better? Just look at the black community, they have been given every kind of benefit under the sun and yet they still live in Ghettos. So now tell me smart puppy, how have liberal ideas helped these people and the illegals who stream acorss the border. It is liberals like you that corrupt Jesus's techings and bend them to suit your cause. No wonder people leave the faith.

  • @calihartley2010

Jesus was a left-wing radical. People like you would hate him with a fiery passion if he came back today and preached the same things he preaches in the Bible. And no, he didn't say to hate the rich, you're right. He just said that God hates the rich, that a rich man has no chance of entering God's kingdom, that blessed are the poor, that blessed are the hungry. Jesus was the most radical left-wing activist in history. Sorry. It's all there in the Bible. Jesus would hate you.

  • @cauchamar For your kind info Jesus may look like a left wing radicle of those days, but it is not true today. You are being blasphemeous saying that Jesus would hate me because He is God and does not hate anyone. He said love the sinner and not the sin. So stop twisiting the Bible to make your stupid points. If Jesus were here, he would tell the poor to work hard and not wait for government handouts. He would tell the illegals to do things the legal way. Stop acting like Jesus supports wrong.

  • @calihartley2010

There is nothing in the Bible to even possibly suggest Jesus would tell anyone, poor or not, to "work hard". I mean he himself quit his job to go wandering around being religious. He also says rich men don't get into Heaven, and as wealth is the result of hard work, it seems likely enough he didn't think much of hard work. He also says not to worry about where your next meal is coming from any more than the birds do. None of this sounds like someone who is pro-work ethic.

  • @cauchamar Wow I sincerely hope that you do not have kids or teach kids at all because you are just perverting the Bible and twisting it to bolster your stupid points that you troll. You seem to be one of those new age hippies that will take everything out of context. I hope you are kept away from people because if they believe what you say, they will lose their faith in God and in what the Bible really stands for.

  • @calihartley2010

The ad hominem attacks are fine, but you didn't even try to offer counter-arguments. I can go chapter and verse on what I've said about Jesus. Can you counter with anything, chapter and verse? He DID quit his "job" to go around not working. He DID say rich men (ie, people who had worked hard, accumulated wealth) wouldn't get into the kingdom of God. He said blessed are the poor and the hungry - why would hard workers be poor and hungry? Jesus was not pro-work. Prove he was.

  • @cauchamar So you recommend that everyone quit his/her jobs and roam the streets and not work? Speak soem sense instead of trolling.

  • @calihartley2010

It's not me recommending it, it's Jesus Christ. If you don't do that, and various other things, then, according to what Jesus himself said, you are NOT a Christian.

  • @cauchamar Ok normalyy i do not say this, but in your case i will make an exception. GO TO HELL and take your baseless trolls with you.

  • @calihartley2010

Have you ever read the Gospels? I've done nothing but quote them and repeat what they mean. I haven't distorted them or added any message to them that is not clearly present in them. I suggest you re-read them (or read them for the first time) carefully, paying attention both to what Jesus says and what Jesus does, and what he is in the context of his society at the time - and you figure out what it means and doesn't mean. You will find he is an enemy of yours.

  • Yes, even the women stand to meet a nun.

  • Nice descent tv. Thank Goodness. GOD Bless all

  • How is being a dentist not scientific? technically your a doctor for teeth...

  • True, but remember that people defined some words (and jobs) very differently 50+ years ago, and such things are constantly evolving. Back then a "science-related profession" likely brought something besides dentistry to mind for most. You'll also notice she said what she did was in some way therapy. Today almost anyone thinks of mental & emotional health when they hear "therapy" and they think of psychiatry or counseling and the last thing that comes to mind is clean teeth and a root canal.

  • I don't think this is sacrilege, but the good sister looks a bit like Harpo Marx.

  • So many post Vatican II so called nuns look like BIG HAIR feminists. This is refreshing, a nun in a habit, not in a pant suit.

  • @MyBetty111 yes and they are all so scary that they consider themselves proud to be democrats and feminists. If you see, today's orders that still wear the habits get the vocations. The pant suit orders are dying since they do not get any vocations. These femist nuns are the one who have destroyed the order their foundreses took so hard to build. In the old days these habited nuns built the world by educating kids with proper manners. Now they teach them wrong stuff.

  • It is so nice to see how the whole panel stood up to receive Sister Mary Christina. Good manners.

  • Dorothy's curtsy at 0:44 originates in her strong Catholic background. On another WML, w/ the mystery guest Fulton Sheen, she kissed the bishop's ring as walked by ...

  • That is so nice.

  • Such respect shown to her as well as when Fulton Sheen was on this show. What's happened to the world today?

  • @rrbond07 It fell into the Crapper!

  • So, The Ladies rose for the Nun,The Bishop, Elenore Roosevelt, Salvador Dolly and someone else. I don't remember them doing that very often.

  • @xenafan234 They rose for Dorothy's father, too, which I thought was very nice.

  • @xenafan234 The other person was Frank Lloyd Wright.

  • I'm from Framingham, Ma. Too funny.

  • Bennett Cerf was a GREAT and wonderful person.

  • I wonder why she said "no" on whether it had to do with science...

  • THAT, my friends, is a NUN. Note the lack of pants suite and acoustic guitar.

  • A Nun who is a dentist? Sounds like a good idea for a film.

  • Can't get enough of this show either.

It's lovely how Arlene and Dorothy stand up when greeting the nun - nice sign of respect.

Apparently, Shirley Booth was a mystery guest at one stage - do you have that?

  • A nun dentist, that's something that's interesting.

  • how lovely to see such excellent manners. why is the world so rotten now

  • @Shanniquitie I ask myself every time I watch WML how we ever got so far away from this wonderful world. Now we turn on the TV and watch hatred, reality TV and filth.

  • @Robert4770 How? One word :Jews...........

  • @Shanniquitie

I TOTALLY AGREE with you. If your question wasn't rhetorical, I believe there are many reasons why "the world is so rotten," more specifically, our country, we don't lead by example anymore. Many people don't care how they act in public. The best way to bring back "excellent manners," is to lead by that example. I definitely do. I appreciated your response.

  • @wcotoko yeah i agree. People must lead by example and they should be good role models if they want to change the world. So it can start with you and me.

  • @calihartley2010

Nothing good is going to start with you, or such as you. You wouldn't change the world in any positive way, or set any positive example. Your insane rants against "jews and liberal aethist [sic]" on here, your talk of one person making a difference, sound a lot like the writings of that right-wing lunatic in Norway who shot all the kids. Yea, he made a difference all right. He set an example. And that's the only kind of difference evil people with evil ideas can make.

  • @cauchamar Well comparing me to that fool who murdered those kids in Norway shows how small minded you are. If you do your research and broaden your small mind, the whole truth will be revelaed. I am talking about using commonsense to start change in society for the better. Not violence. So next time you reply to my comments, please research what i have written and then comment. You sound like a liberal idiot who does not know stuff but will still try and piece wierd stuff to make a stupic point

  • @calihartley2010

Name the changes you'd like to see. I bet they're racist, anti-poor, and effectively violent.

  • @Shanniquitie it's the normal flow of relationships, attitudes, behaviours and opinions. there's always a great deal of unrest before a revolution (I don't mean revolution in any political sense). Two things to remember - be patient and love thy neighbor.

  • @Shanniquitie Well nice manners towards white people and in front of a nun. On the whole I think people are much better today.

  • @Shanniquitie The answer is easy. Society has turned it's back to God, and along with Him, went our morals and manners.

  • When the ladies rose, it was usually a case of standing for their elders or in honor of a religious vocation.

  • "What's My Line" was the greatest TV game ever created. It captured so much talent, that we enjoy watching today.

  • I love Arlene's dress!!

  • its so nice to see how respectful they were to the nun now a days people are not as polite as they should be to respectful memebers of the society!

  • arlene was born 102 years ago today!

  • Bennett is so good!

  • John tells a nun to be honest? Would that not be a faux pas?

  • the ladies also rose for Dr. Norman Vincent Peale.

  • The ladies also rose for Dorothy's father and Sophie Tucker.

  • they also rose for architect Frank Lloyd Wright, Bishop Fulton Sheen and a few more I don't remember right now. But it was very rare.

  • wow. sister mary has sum nice handwriting

  • How funny that I came across this, I go to a Marist Brothers School.

  • I'll never get enough of this show

  • @calalilygirl I'll never get enough of Arlene Francis :D Never seen a woman quite like her in terms of looks and intellect, not to mention the fact that she actually was a woman who could make good jokes.

  • You should stand if you know the woman is a nun (they don't wear those types of habits any more), it is a form of reverent gesture. But not everyone knows that. Not one of my CCD teachers ever taught me to stand when a nun enters the room. Also, GOD WILL NOT STRIKE YOU DEAD. If he did that every time we sinned, we'd be all DEAD.

  • "That's a typical John Daly-answer, sister" ;D (would be totally complete if he added a yes to a negative answer and ended his sentce with a no :P)

  • i think the rising for a nun is a sign of respect regardless of religious affiliation. the ladies also rose for mrs. roosevelt.

i love the church/stork club quotation. that dorothy!

patrick: why wouldn't you rise for a nun?

yeah, bennett is pretty clever, but john kinda tipped him off with the stuff about kids come willingly if they're lied to, etc.

    great episode.

  • @jimmysudar Patrick is stupid. If he is a Catholic, he should be ashamed.

  • Bennett is awesome. If no one else can get the answer, Bennett nails it. He's my favorite.

  • LoL...the panel is so well behaved!

  • i think thats the first time ive seen the whole panel stand for a guest

  • Ah that Mr. Cerf.. if no one gets them, he will

  • Curses, I thought she had them fooled; that damned bennet cerf

  • Hail the WML production staff in find warm interesting contestants with fascinating jobs that generate an educational discussion afterward.

Gil Fates reported in his book that audiences always responded warmly to nuns and ministers with interesting jobs, and Sister Mary Christina ranks up there with Sister Kenny and an auto mechanic nun contestant.

0:45 Catholic Kilgallen once wrote, "Believe it or not, it is possible to go to church and the Stork Club on the same day."

  • Comment removed

  • I noticed that Dorothy rose as the nun entered. Also everyone on the panel rose to greet her. Very respectful.

  • Dorothy Kilgallen rose because she was Roman Catholic. She also kisses Bishop Sheen's ring when he made his guest appearance

  • I read a biography of Arlene Francis on line and she did not convert to the Jewish faith. She was raised in the Eastern Orthodox faith but did not practice in later years. Friends say she always considered herself a Christian.

  • @torchkit Why did this comment receive negative votes? Nothing bad was said here.

  • I would have never guessed this secret.
