  • Yes... and the manta is quite obviously threatened by the diver reaching out to him....as he should be, since a human touch destroys their protective mucus membrane.

  • I was just watching a TV show and they said its often because they feel threatened by something below (can be caused by boat engines too)

  • this is a really sweet video

  • wow m8 u should be like a professional underwater photographer, that was great.....if only someone could have filmed at the surface too

  • Man Ray >:(

  • Cool video. Seen a couple of comments asking "Why". Generally, the consensus is to remove parasites. Which would sort of fit with the video footage. The bubbles tickling under the ray might have stimulated a parasite reaction (someone else suggested this in thread). If you don't think so. Go stick your feet in one of those "fish foot spa" appearing everywhere (or in a rockpool where it's free). Then do same with some bubbles when diving. Similar sensation even to a thick skin. Good capture.

  • Thay give birth in mid-air

  • Manta ray-"brb guys just gotta do a backflip"

  • Such amazing creatures! <3

  • what a graceful creature

  • i know its nto a sting ray but i couldnt resist 9 people were steve erwins family members

  • man they look so cool

  • its a mobula

  • @20sixred No, it's not. It is quite obviously a manta. Just look at the size of the fish, the white tips of the pectoral fins, and the typical marks on the shoulders. You can even vaguely make out the typical "V" on the back in front of the dorsal fin (0:9-0:10). There are no "mobula" species with those markings.

Only big mobulas of nearly comparable size are M. tarapacana and M. mobular., and they do not look like the mobulid in the video - at all.

  • Who would Dislike this?

  • Sooo cute

  • Manta: oh little fishy.. will you marry with me?

little fishy: oh yes! yes i will!

Manta: YIPPYYYY!! *jumps out of water*

  • wonderfull animals :)

  • I've seen a ton of mantas jumping off the coast of Mexico while fishing, but they do it without any warning, so I've never been able to get a shot of one. Great video.

  • manta rays are awsome =P

  • Think if manta rays could fly...

  • Belly Flap

  • Omg How Pretty . (: -3

  • It's cool to see the rays jump, but scary if your boat is anchored right where it jumps out.

  • I haz wingz...

  • Cryptozoology novel about two boys who find something strange on the beach one night see video book trailer

  • Holy shite

  • Diver: SWIM! Justin bieber is coming!

    M-Ray: fuck!..*swims up*,.....DAMMIT!

  • No one is quite sure why manta rays jump.. Some think they might do it to slap parasites off their backs, others think its actually a sort of play.

My personal belief is that they do it to try to shake fish such as cobia or remora off of them. When you think about it, the more fish around them, the stronger the scent, more chance of a shark coming along. Large sharks and orcas are the manta's only predetors soooo...

I dont know, just a thought.

  • Looked like a bomb just went off.

  • Hi Lorna

is this ok for my NVQ in IT?

  • fucking awesome

  • i believe i can fly!

i believe i can touch the -SPLASH-

    aww not again >.<

  • It spazzed out

  • I've seen this happen twice, both in Nassau, Bahamas. The ray was alot smaller than this, but it was one of the strangest things ive ever seen. I was like 'holy shit its a pokemon'

  • Wapau!!! And there goes the most awesome thing ever!

  • Frosty, you are showing off.... good footage though. I hope to get a sperm whale doing that. Have a splash photo out there.

  • wow how cool is that!!!!!!

i knew mantas could leap like mobulas but i thought it had never been filmed... and you filmed it frow UNDER THE WATER! thumbs up!!!

does it makes a loud sound under the water?? ( like a big "clash!!" ) because i saw mobulas leaping (from the surface) and they make impressive noise even from afar!

  • Fucking Diver...

  • That's really cool and all but what is the point of a manta ray jumping out of the water? I'm not trying to be a smartass, I really want to know.

  • I'm told they do it to slap the parasites off their back.

  • I heard they do it for fun?

  • @phirebyrd89 what is the point of us jumping in to the water?

  • @phirebyrd89 Also been told it helps them get away from Preditors, if a shark the sound of the water slapping stuffs with it's sensors.

  • @phirebyrd89 maybe its fun, lol.

  • @phirebyrd89

    the reason is mating season.

  • beautiful creatures

  • manta rays dont stink do thaey or is it the sting ray

  • @FLAREflare14

You're thinking of the mystical 'stink' ray.

    They smell, bad.

  • @scowell It is actually called a hunsdale marlin, ken?

  • ive been in a dive like those and its...amazing they just swim around and jump its pretty cool experience

  • Gah that was just beautiful. Your lucky to have seen it jump like that.

  • man what a good areil shot that would've been, BTW how was this filmed?

  • I had/have a Sony Mini DV camcorder, not HD unfortunately :-( otherwise I could have made money with it.

  • If those things could breathe air, they could conquer the planet.

  • cool..he thinks he is a dolphin ..

  • Great video! I didn't know Mantas breached.

  • are manta ray fish or mammal?

  • @lclagu manta ray are in the shark family, so they are fish

  • apparently, mantas are immune to backflops

  • It thought it saw Steve Irwin

    inb4 "it's not a sting ray"

  • Such a magnificent manta!

  • Wowee

  • i didnt know they could go so fast.

  • Manta Airlines

  • My math teacher went to belize and saw one of these... and lol cause its like he got bored and said"hm... ima jump"

  • can you say backflop

  • @1800viper yes, yes you can

  • epic

  • he's just showing off his skills at the divers

  • I'm out of words after seeing that... damn I miss the ocean, what the hell am I doing here???

  • I feel your pain.

  • I'm coming back as a Manta Ray in my next life.

    Beautiful video <3

  • wow, gorgeous

  • The Mantaray was Showing Off ;-)

  • Wow all those parasites and dirt that comes form his back, when he landed on the water!

  • Those are just air bubbles.

  • Yes, and parasites ;-)

  • scary ass shit, nice to look at from far away but being in the same tank at the same time? not even for a million bucks

  • Tank? I'm pretty sure they're in the ocean. And as big as they are they are plankton eaters, so absolutely no danger to you... Sweet video by the way - definitely in the right place at the right time!

  • @BrunosDiveShop No,this is a acually at a tank in the Georgia Aquarium,I belive.

  • Comment removed

  • Wow, beautiful and awesome :D.

  • it would be fun to be riding it

  • bit of a showoff but sickly awosme ^^)

  • That was beautiful. :)

  • Dude that thing is insanely awesome and scary at the same time.

I'm intrigued by it but I wouldn't want it anywhere near me in the water.

  • manta ray r harmless it couldnt do anything to harm u

  • unless you're in a speed boat and one happens to jump up and you're head runs into it... instant death

  • yes, I just saw that in this video:

Stingray Leaps From Water, Killing Woman

  • @maxcap2 lmao!

  • @maxcap2 oh i remeber when that happened to that lady

  • @maxcap2

    Mobula, not Manta ray, different.

  • @falconxev dont they both jump out of the water?

  • @maxcap2 that was happened before, it killed a lady.

  • @P1nkbarrage i know, sad

  • @maxcap2 that actually happened to a man where i live in florida

  • Whoa, you're so lucky! I've spent one day looking for Manta ray at Sangalaki and I've just saw a glimpse of it.

  • WOH thats mad as!!

  • that jumping is usually a hunting tactic. chances are that there was a "bait ball" above, which explains the angle of its jump. its surprising to see something with a 15 foot wingspan do something like that, though, regardless of how much study you put into it

  • DAMN Talk about a belly flop. lol

  • THATS AWESOME! I do studys and bowfish their smaller cousin the Cownose but they dont usually jump like that but ive never seen an angle like that from underwater that was sick. Although one thing worries me, I always see people trying to touch them when diving and it worries me that nobody briefs divers on the fact that they have a mucous layer on the outside that can cause lesions on the rays skin if disturbed

  • My most treasured memory of my Bahamas vacation: observing the manta rays in the aquarium at the Atlantis casino: pure elegance and tranquility. From a balconcy we could observe one particular manta ray, cruising close to the surface and with its wing tips sometimes out of the water. Gorgeous! It was a feast for the eyes and I actually keep a framed picture of that manta on my shelf. Would be my dream to meet them in the open water!

  • go to kona, hawaii if you have the chance. i did a night dive, at about $50 a person, with manta rays and we had 5 feeding right below us. They coe within inches of your body at the surface and it is truly amazing. You aren't allowed to free dive with them however but the experience is still stunning. These creatures are absolutely amazing

  • I had no idea they could swim that fast

  • That's so cool! I only recently found out that there were giant manta rays out there. This one was so cute! I hope someday I'll get a chance to swim with them too ^-^

  • Its cute :D

  • lol they are so kewl realli calm and do awsome belly slaps

  • I love mantas I hope to swim with them someday.

  • what a show off

  • wow Manta Rays are awesome creatures.

  • Wow - that's impressive. Nice luck there.

  • Clap clap clap!

10 pts for beauty and grace

    but a show off lol

  • do they have a stinger like a sting ray?

this is an amazing video! :)

  • don't think so, i think thats why sting rays are called "Sting" rays.

  • He said "take that biatch". I love it. Total show off.

    Fantastic video.

  • WOW! i never knew they could jump =P

  • wow, ive seen many eagle rays jump out of the water.... but seeing it from underwater, now that's cool!

  • its showing off its skittles! haha

  • it looks so unreal

  • nope. they can jump

  • ya i no its real, but it looks sureal

  • Never had the change to dive with manta rays. Saw some in baja california jumping out of the water...it's just fascinating. I had the chance to dive with bull sharks, sting rays...but There's nothing like a giant manta.

  • oo i wanna touch it! lol i heard if you touch it that it can get a skin infection?? idk but they are awesome!! :D yea!

  • ooo i want on for a pet even though they grow up to be 24 foot wide lol

  • yeah put it in the bathtub XD

  • That's kewl. I never knew mantas leaped out of the water too, I've only known that other types of rays, Eagle rays, etc. jumped out of the water. Thanx for posting the vid.

  • wow

judging by thier size, i didnt think they could be so quick

  • I wonder why they do that. Maybe they just get bored and do random shit like that to pass the time...I know I would if I were a Manta, all that swimming must get terribly monotonous.

  • They do that when they get spooked or startled.

  • i like it but a better angle would be good to

  • tal vez no entiendan mi idioma, pero que esxpreiencia tan linda han vivdo. gracias ´por dar a coner este video

  • wow how magnificent, I wish I was there to touch it.....as long as it doesn't kill me like it did with Steve Erwin RIP stevo

  • i love manta rays, i have an obsession with them, in the bahamas we watch them glide under the bridge all the time

  • They are indeed gorgeous creatures. I think they are absoloutely the most graceful creatures, they just glide in the water and look pretty all day long.

  • have there been any reports of people being attacked by any?

  • It's unlikely that anyone would be attacked by a Manta on purpose, as Mantas are filter feeders.

  • thats be free!!!!

  • that is awesome to catch a jump from underwater!

  • Lol splash on the back...

  • wooow, thanks... one can see often videos of mantas jumping, but... not from down under... wooow great video,

  • well I did learn something new today after all :)

  • that is pretty unique footage, cool

  • He's obviously just bored and thought:

    I wonder if I can.. Y'know.. Fly.

    ...

    *Jumps.*

    Shit. I can't.

  • lol

  • it probably jumped due to being tickled by the bubbles from the divers

  • Why did he do that?

  • Awesome! Thank you so much! For decades I've wanted to see a manta breach from under the water. Thank you!

  • Great video.... I've dived with mantas and filmed them many times, so when I say "This vid really rocks" I really mean it!

  • thanks.....I was privilege to witness the jump from below and glad I can share it for others to see.

  • manta rays are cool but sting rays are scary

  • show off >_>

  • cool, looks like it was showing off

  • oh nvm i read some comments and now i know why

    :)

  • why do they do that?

  • whoa!!!

  • WOW....manta rays are simply majestic creatures.I used to study marine biology for 8 12 years and Those creatures are simply stunning.Manta rays are quite friendly, but don't do something stupid to annoy or hurt it, and they will be cool with u, swimming amongst them

  • whats the difference between a stingray and a manta ray?

    Whats a manta ray?

  • A manta ray is much bigger and has no sting.

  • Haha. That's awesome, even though I expected more, lol. I LOVE <3 MANTA RAYS! They are beautiful creatures. Ever since my science book (Swimming Creatures o the fifth day) I FELL IN LOVE WITH THEM! They are just beautiful wonderful creatures. God is so great.
