To all the naysayers trashing MF's voice now vs then? Get a life and grow a fuckin' brain. She's a mature older lady that still looks and sings fine! I met her almost 20 yrs ago at Tower Records-Boston and she was a delight to meet, but unfortunately her avid chain smoking has taking it's toll. A very cool lady indeed!
@MuslimLoveJewishCock Although many others now praise her current voice as having "character, depth, experience, etc.," I find it, as do you, to be a broken fragment of what was once something beautiful and ethereral. Give me--PLEASE--her original recording of this wonderful song. Until then, my own tears will go by.
Yes, But Ur Rich's bought U a Agnes B. Tuxedo, it is simply beuatiful, and U wear it so well, and U look AB-FAB, as always, good bless u my Dar, Dear women !
Icon is the term to descibe her, i like her voice better as she has aged like a fine wine, if i can use such a cliched term, its quite unique and she is still a very attractive lady !
What is the name of the instrument that Marianne mentions in the beginning of the video? It sounds just like what was used in the original 1965 recording.
Wow. This takes me back to my childhood - living on a 40 acre farm with a flock of well over 100 sheep. What I'm trying to say is - her voice is baaaaaaaaaaad.
@origins1965 I think her 'today' voice is very interesting. She had lost something but gained a lot too. This is the voice in which you can hear the story of her life. I find it much more moving than the voice she had as a young girl. It hasn't stopped being beautiful, it's just a different kind of beauty, more bitter and poignant, not so obvious.
Daft as a brush is a kind of affectionate way of saying someone is bonkers, crazy, gone off the rails. She was bonkers for a while, some time back in the 70's, and her lifestyle reflected that. She is back on track now, and although maybe still a bit eccentric, certainly not stupid! All the best.
Brilliant. I hadn't heard much of Marianne's work apart from Before The Poison and her duet with Patrick Wolf. It would be great if you could upload The Crane Wife 3 from the BBC 4 show, for me it was one of the highlights of the set.
Marianne looks and sounds fantastic, full of warmth and charisma! This is the voice she's had for 20 to 30 years now, and Marianne, one could say, is a pure 'Nicotine Contralto,' the like of no other in musical existence. One loves or hates, likes or dislikes, this inimitable voice. Personally, her presence is a thing of beauty for its honesty and magnetism. What Marianne accomplishes live is akin to what Dietrich, Lenya, Piaf and Holliday won millions over with. Savor it!
Too much bad plastic surgery.

I'll keep listening to her original recording. It was actually soothing to listen to.
Listening to her know is as enjoyable as hearing someone scratch their nails on a blackboard. A 180 degree turn. How sad.

I love this. I've never heard the mature Marianne sing it with the original orchestrations, only the newer ones. She does quite well.

Cor anglais ("English horn")
it (the horn) seems a bit out of tune to me btw. it is a great take, still.

I agree, pitch problems, out of tune, this is painful to listen to
it's almost like she forgot how to sing and you can clearly hear the permanent damage tobacco has taken it's toll....very sad indeed.
this is karaoke bar quality singing to drunks....the arrangements are done well, it's her voice that has not weathered the test of time.

Very True!
When I hear this, I mourn the loss of her fantastic original version
origins1965 1 year ago
the heavy smoking has damaged & charbroiled her vocal chords compared to her 1965 version....very sad indeed.
The 1965 version is crisp, clear & better range.
The new version would never hit the charts

@origins1965 True but one could argue that his current voice suits better certain type of songs such as Sister Morphine or this one.
