  • I have bought vitamin d "pearls" in the country I live in that say they are 200mg per per. How many of those a day could a person take to be therapeutic? How much is too much?

  • @RefuseForced2Link I personally take 7000 units per day, and have been taking at this level for about 1 1/2 years, and a cold has not even tried to get me (no sore throats, sniffles, etc). Before that I was taking 5000 units per day, and a cold would try to get me with at sore throat, once in a while, so that's why I decided to up my dosage to 7000 units per day. I had a tooth pulled, during this period of taking 7000 units per day.

  • @RefuseForced2Link So I increased my daily dosage to 20,000 units, and the gum healed quickly (within a week), and then I dropped my dosage back to 7000 units per day. I really do believe this level dosage is helping to boost my immune system. I have also seen where a person should not take over 10,000 units per day over a very long period of time. So when I do up my dosage to 20,000 units per day, I don't leave it there for more than a week or two at the most.

  • @combesinc From my own experience I KNOW it has boosted my immune system. I am taking 7000 units per day now, and have been for about a year. I have not had one cold even try to get me since then!! I didn't take any flu shots this past winter either, plus I am 71!

  • I started at 10,000 IU for three months, then reduced to 5,000 IU for a month, then 3,000 IU for six months, then 2,200 IU for a year, now I just take 1,000 IU. I probably should take more, but I felt too anxious when I was taking higher doses (except for the 2,200 IU and 1,000 IU, of course). I'm 5'9" and I only weight 135 pounds (I have a very fast metabolism despite eating at least 3,000 calories a day), so I probably get a little more vitamin D from my diet and sun exposure.

  • @BCCButters711 How do you mean "anxious" when taking the higher doses - I mean how did it manifest in you? You are right, if you are out in the sun a lot (I am not), then you don't need to take the higher doses, except in the coldest part of the winter, when most people are not out in the sun much.

  • Ive not been active for 20 years so I hope Vit D means Rocket Fuel for the body..

  • @2012Wordsmith No it is not rocket fuel for your physical strength, but it IS rocket fuel for your immune system!

  • @ThePeoplesChemist Ok, if you are correct, what is the maximum amount of vitamin D that should be taken orally per day?

  • Vitamin D also reduces the amount of acne and also reduces the amount of pimples you have on your body.... true or false?

  • @1995a1995z Sorry, I don't know about that one. Why don't you just Google that question to find the answer?

  • @1995a1995z

When I was taking a high dose, my acne got better.

  • @BCCButters711 What dosage did you take, and for how long, before you saw a difference? I take 7000 units/day, and I haven't had a cold or the flu since, and neither has even tried to come on me (like no sore throats or sniffles)! I have been taking this dosage since last summer. Before that I was taking 5000 units/day, and once in a while I would get a sore throat - then I would increase the dosage to 20,000 units/day, and it would disappear in two to three days, and the cold wouldn't develop.

  • @1995a1995z this is true. i just started taking fish oil with vitamin d and it worked a miracle on my back. but i didn't take it orally...yet. but i think im just gonna start taking vitamin d straight up orally.

  • Quick question, if vitamin D improves the immune system, will this speed up the effects found in autoimmune diseases? E.g. multiple sclerosis were the immune system attacks the body's own nerve cells?

  • @Unlocalist good question, I'd like to know that too. The question however should be: Does a severe Vitamin D deficiency, with many harmful effects, happen to be of advantage in cases of autoimmune diseases?

  • Yes, watch UCSD Health Series lectures and you'll find that autoimmune diseases are also affected and are helped with increased levels based on their 40 plus years of research at itshrunk.com/health-series and automated4health

  • @Unlocalist D controls the genes making sure they don't over react which is the case when you have lack of it. Its also been shown to kill cancer cells.

  • Damn right! Take 6000 units daily and save yourself from cancer, flu and pain! Illuminate your body from the inside out! Avoid the shot!

  • I take 5000 IU per day , Its brillent but i got the swine flu jab before i new about the VitD3 vit

  • take vitamin D and not the H1n1 shot! Do your research.

  • Take 4000 to 5000 units per day! It WILL help!

  • Hi joel, Thank you for posting this. Could you kindly share your recommended brands for the supplements especially for DHA, mutivitamins, and vitamin D? Thank you!

  • @katelola10 I get my Vitamin D-3, and DHA at Walmart, and my Multiple Vitamins at Sams Club. I also find store brands on eBay at a much reduced price, of other supplements. The one's I can't find on eBay, I get at the Vitamin Shoppe on the Internet or locally (you save shipping if you have a local Vitamin Shoppe. They have just about everything you could ever want - many more supplements than GNC has.

  • @joel10000a I am 70, and I take lots of different supplements for cancer prevention, mental health, heart health, prostate health, more energy, longevity.

  • @katelola10 holland and barret have some good deals on omega 3, which has shed loads of DHA, iv been popping 4000 mg a day for 3 years, im gona start with vit d straight away

  • I have been taking 2000 iu in the summer and 4000 iu per my docs recommendations after a 3 month, high dose regimine to up my levels after having the blood test showing my levels way too low. Being from the Great NW, we don't have a lot of sunny days to get our sun in naturally, so taking it seems to be the way. I have not had near the amount of colds and NO flu's since starting this over a year ago!! =D I swear by Vit D and have the whole family taking doses of it, hubby and the kids too!

  • The same with me!!! When I have felt a cold coming on - I up my dosage to 10,000 units per day, until the symptoms (sore throat, sniffling, etc.) leave - usually in only two or three days. This only happened to me once since I have been taking around 4500 units per day.

  • what is the difference: in D/3 and D in general?

in Canada recomended dosage is 400 UI...

    cheers

  • D3 is what you need, and what is commonly found in stores. This is saying, and others are also saying we need a lot more vitamin D than 400 units. I take around 4500 units/day, and have not had a cold since I started taking this much, around 9 months ago. If I start to feel a cold coming on- I double the dosage. I am going to be 70 this coming Sat.

  • well done Joel

  • I take vitamin D and it really does help with fatigue. I have Multiple sclerosis so taking these supplements really helps me get through the day without taking two naps everyday.

  • In the Netherlands, the recommended daily amount (ADH) is only 5mcg. (200 IU). Legal requirements limit the general usage supplements to this low amount.

It seems that the Netherlands government is just looking to the bone benefits of Vitamin D, ignoring the other benefits.

  • An adult needs to take 4000 to 5000 units daily, especially in the fall, winter, and spring when we are not exposed to the sun as much as in the summer. The Body will generate Vitamin D from sunshine directly on the body.

  • if it true i been told tha Vitamin D can make your skin lighter ? please repsond

  • I don't know - you can do a search for your question on the internet. Let us know what you find out.

  • In the UK the strongest vitamin D3 available is 1000iu. UK readers need to import effective strength D3 from the USA. I use IHERB. They do Now Foods 5000iu oil based gel capsules $8.80. If you order 3 packs 360 capsules and use Code WAB666 you will save $5 and just sneak under the £18 customs tax threshold.

  • If a mere 30 miniutes daily sun exposure gives about 100,000 IU of VIT D, then 150,000 IU's a day might be a minimum dosage, even in summer. Being that it is healthy to be in the sun as much as possible, excepting at point of burning. if you burn easily, and can only be in sun for 1 hour daily, (200,000 IU) then you need even MORE supplementation. When you add it all up, it seems we need a minimum of 300,000 + IU's of VIT daily. Thus, 150,000 IU + daily supplementation would seem reasonable.

  • Taking that much internally might not be safe, because taking it internally is different than being absorbed through the skin from the sun. I sure wouldn't take anywhere that much internally. I am taking around 4500 units per day internally now, and I haven't had a cold since I started, and I am 69 years old! I also take a lot of other supplements too, to boost my immune system, plus cancer preventatives, prostate aids, and vitamins & minerals.

  • hi joel what are some of the cancer preventatives you are taking

  • Selenium, Vitamin E, Vitamin D, Lycopene, Vitamin K-1 (helps Vitamin D work better), DHA, Resveratrol with grapeseed extract. magnesium. I heard the other day that magnesium may help people whose arms shake. Sometimes this is because of a magnesium deficiency.

  • I've read from doctors online that D manufactured in the skin from sunlight can yield anywhere from 10,000-90,000 IU in noon sun for 20-30 minutes, but the tan that results cuts back further absorption, sort of as a built in natural safety control. The body can store it for the winter. But pills don't have a safety control, so learn the symptoms of D toxicity from a reliable source before embarking on non-RDA supplementation.

  • I take Cod Liver Oil for Vitamin D.. ITs so important..

  • In the winter you are less likely to get the exposure to sun that you need.

  • I have started taking 4400 units of Vit. D per day. I may cut back during the Summer, and then start back again in the late Fall.

  • Yes, if you get more sun in the summer. Have your doctor check your levels to see what you need.

  • If you stay out in the summer sun just a short time (an hour or so) your body will produce thousands of units of Vitamin D, probably in the range of 10,000 units. You can't overdose on the Vitamin D your body produces from exposure to the sun.

  • Cool!

  • Summer sun?, winter sun?, or does it matter?

  • Hi Joel -- I don't think it matters.

  • Vitamin D3 (Cholecalciferol) in liquid softgel form

is the way to go because it is highly absorbable.

2000 IU of oral Vitamin D = approx. 10 minutes in

    the sun.
