Scholes started out an attacking midfielder, who dropped into a more holding role as he got older to save his legs and get the very best from his passing ability, xavi has always played more of a holding role keeping things tidy in the centre of the park. For me, scholes is a better passer, can strike the ball better, and is more of an enforcer, but xavi is probably the better at keeping the ball in small spaces and has a little more skill. Id rather watch xavi on TV, but have scholes in my team
