hi skater i went this year and last year to syria and jordan i felt completely safe and welcomed in both places. people are educated, kind, sophisticated. there is no 'vibe' what so ever of extremism or radicalism. it kind of makes you wonder what is going on with all the 'cr..p' we are fed by the american media. amman jordan is a good base for your trip. you can do a trip to damascus with a hired car from amman. pick up a lonely planet guide or similar at your local book store
