I got locked up from age 14 - 16 in a cult like program for teens. Been put on several psychiatric medications and never really had a psychiatric illness. Now I have permanent brain damage from an SSRI called Lexapro I took 5 years ago and have had 3 strokes. I was a normal, sensitive kid and got labeled as "troubled" because our family had an unhealthy dynamic. That stigma has never left. I think the problem is that psychs and the psych nurses in the system are very insular people who have led incredibly sheltered lives. They just do not have the capability or wisdom to understand the "patients" because they have no clue how people work or get on socially. I am a survivor of childhood abuse. My mother spent my entire life trying to convince me and others that I was "different", "troubled" and whatever else she could conjure up in her twisted mind to keep me looking bad. She tried to get me committed but got busted for child abuse when I was a kid. My therapists told me that I'm strong, that my talents & attractiveness threatened her. 24 years later I found I was gluten intolerant and I was much more stable and cheerful and less anxious when I didn't eat foods I'd developed sensitivities to.
The psychiatric system wasn't about to find this out, they would have drugged me instead and maybe I'd be permanently damaged from drugs.

I find you all to be picking aberrant cases. There are bad doctors everywhere. It also depends on the disorder you are referring to. There are too many people who need treatment and don't get it. It helps a good many people. Don't generalize from marginal cases to the total population. I can relate to what you are talking about,my psychiatrist had me on twenty two medications per day, and the one that put me over the top, was the drug PAXIL, I was on that for over one and one half years. I have been through hell and back. Been in prison because of the meds I was on. Made me not be able to think, walk, talk, drive, and I couldn't even feel my own skin.
Jeez... I'm sorry to hear about what happened to you. The only reason that they would do this to people, is that they're afraid of us: people tend to assume that if ANYTHING is different about our personalities (however slight), we're going to hurt them, and/or do abhorrent things like molest children or screw animals. (They also make thousands for every day a person is locked up.)

Network with an consumer/survivor advocacy group, get involved in whatever they are doing, and educate your family in a non-threatening way. It's hard to advise someone when you don't know the whole story, but maybe these suggestions will apply to you. I wish you the best.

it makes me think of the kennedy's when one of JFK's sisters , I think, was mildly mentally handicapped and made a an embarassing sexual pass at a young man who was visiting them- I guess you could say and she was thrown in an institution and labotomized- rose kennedy then had taken up the crusade to protect

I find you all to be picking aberrant cases. There are bad doctors everywhere. It also depends on the disorder you are referring to. There are too many people who need treatment and don't get it. It helps a good many people. Don't generalize from marginal cases to the total population. As for pseudo-science- why the holes in the posterior ventricles of Schizophrenia and some bipolar disorders? We just need better people to be psychiatrists, not get rid of them.

People are GLAD we suffered. Think about it. We are a class of people that are not considered human. People laugh at our torture and pain and suffering. They LOVE it.
Mass cultural sadism---that is America. 10,000 people would show up to watch a black man lynched and burned alive.
Stay away from your family---run like hell if you haven't yet.

Welcome to the human race. Until we get the media and Hollywood to quit profiling people as psycho and crazy, psychiatry will still rule.
People don't care, bro. A few folks who haven't been in the nut ward might care, but the ones who REALLY care want to forget about it. What can be done as long as people believe that people need to be locked up to protect society? It's a Hollywood game. Hollywood needs to be destroyed if you really want to know the truth.

I can relate to what you are talking about,my psychiatrist had me on twenty two medications per day, and the one that put me over the top, was the drug PAXIL, I was on that for over one and one half years. I have been through hell and back. Been in prison because of the meds I was on. Made me not be able to think, walk, talk, drive, and I couldn't even feel my own skin.

Jeez... I'm sorry to hear about what happened to you. The only reason that they would do this to people, is that they're afraid of us: people tend to assume that if ANYTHING is different about our personalities (however slight), we're going to hurt them, and/or do abhorrent things like molest children or screw animals. (They also make thousands for every day a person is locked up.)
But I wonder why there's no punishment for what they did to you? Why aren't these people in prison?

Because psychiatry is not held accountable for the damage they cause. The reason is because the damage they cause is from "treatments" that are approved by the medical profession. They can be horrid -- but perfectly legal. And common.

god bless, that is a sad story, you were failed by your family and people in the psychiatric system. nobody should be forced to take medication. if you believe nothing is wrong with you and you are living life fully without endangering the lives of others, godspeed. Good to see he hasn't been broken by incompetent people

Network with an consumer/survivor advocacy group, get involved in whatever they are doing, and educate your family in a non-threatening way. It's hard to advise someone when you don't know the whole story, but maybe these suggestions will apply to you. I wish you the best.

well I had a similar experience but as an adult(complete betrayal from family loved ones)The nightmare for me is that I still have to see them because of financial ties from inheritance.Can anyone suggest what I can do to soften the blackmail and invalidation?
