I've never had a problem with Casper eating the dirt or really even getting it on her. She stays pretty focussed on the grass and doesn't usually eat far enough down to get to the dirt. Plus, a friend who uses it all the time says that it is "inert" and has no bacteria or organisms in it to harm any pet for which it is used. If you have more questions, I would suggest contacting the company that makes/prepares it.
