I don't understand why you didn't show the five and a half minute hallway from the camera's perspective. It sort of kills the whole thing when it isn't one continuous take.
Like, it's not hard to do, why is it like that? This bothers the hell out of me.
I don't mean to be harsh, but why didn't you use the correct fonts for the last part of the video? The fonts were one of the most vital parts of the book.
Yeah, I like how it sort of starts out following HOL, but then it kind of falls apart when he opens the door and you can't see anything and during the Holloway scene you can see a window which is not supposed to be present. I would love to see HOL as a movie, but only the Navidson Record portion of it, but I fear it would look to dark to see anything like this or computer animation will make it to fake. I want to enter the hallway and get a sense of realness, which may be impossible.
I think the weakest aspect of this production was the sound, and by extension, the voice acting. Not everybody is an actor, I appreciate that, but given the subject matter and the strong need for a dramatic reading, it becomes much more important. Even with a huge budget and high end equipment, any adaptation of House of Leaves would ultimately be highly atmospheric and dialogue heavy. If you could get a really talented voice actor to overdub, it'd make a huge difference.
You did it wrong. The door is facing North, he exists through the window to the East (which would be the RIGHT window in this video) and re-enters to the west (which would be the LEFT). You have him exiting through the west and entering through the east. Just to be obnoxiously meticulous about detail.
Personally I like the effort, but I think it wasn't very well done at all. not bad for amateurs though. also I would pay more attention to the text. its a hard thing to do.
It's all right... but isn't 5 1/2 minute hallway one of the segments when no one actually appears on film? You just hear their voices in the background?
honestly, you should have done something about that door. With how much effort you put into this, the glass backdoor isn't working, and should have been modified at least.
having said that, I like it. I was just about to do this, and decided to look it up to see if anyone had. Oh, but I'm still doing one....hehe
it was done for a film class and the location was chosen without my direction. everything else was done by me personally, but unfortunately i could not get a better location. that damned door with the blinds and the awkward angle always did bug me too
Sure it would translate. It just would not a be a conventional blockbuster piece. It would cross the borders of experimental and art films but the book would surely work, especially since it revolves are film so much.
It's by Poe, the stage name for Ann Danielewski, Mark's sister. "Wild" is the first song, then various others. Check her stuff on iTunes, it's very good.
Afterwards, like with "The Navidson Record," It's all shot from either Hi-8s, maybe one or two other types of hand-held recorders, and from all of the security cameras in the House. Then, Navidson would edit the footage and create his movie. This scene is probably being shot by a security camera.
It was good over all but I would like to say that you had cut away angles in the first part and music and the book described rhe movies as having neither of those things.
Thats convenient that they don't show it from the Navy's camera's view the whole time and that you can't really see what is in there when they open the door. On top of that the acting sucks.
If you understand the convinience then why did you comment? I don't remember everyone having directing/editing experience, nor a professional studio at home.
hey kudos guys. These people can say whatever the hell they want but i havent seen them take a crack at it. Anyone whos read the book once ... let alone a dozen times knows this is tough to even imagine trying to put this to film.
so, for what its worth as a work in and of it self, i digg it.
postscript.... i wanna see a shot at what you would do for 265 -- johnnys part with the dog... that still makes me shiver and a bit uneasy.
People are so harsh on this clip. I think is good...remember, the book itself is really challenging so making this little bit of video is already a good start. Will we someday see a movie of this book? I hope...NOT!!
thanks, and i totally agree that future feature interpretation of the book as a whole would suck.
this is more of a trailer to the book to pose questions basically to never be answered but nonetheless inspire readers to attempt the unique and stimulating text.
The beginning was good, and followed the book. It felt like I was watching what Zampano had written about. But then when it got to Halloway Roberts, it started to get where it felt like it was trying to hard to be a horror flick, and got a little cheesy. I think it would have been more dramatic if it had been simpler and had stayed more like how Navidson "did" it.
thanks. cheesy isnt a word i would look for in a good review but i think you are kind of right anyway. my movie version is unable to reach the status of the book for obvious reasons. the Halloway Roberts sequence is from Exploration #4. it is referred to as more of a revolting disturbing sequence of random images, completely confusing and I used peices of the book to fill in my own gaps.
it's good that someone 'tried' to recreate a portion or the navidson record. but, yeah... maybe you should have kept to a segment of the narrative rather than a collection of random scenes. and leave johnny out of it next time!
i was hoping i could find some really well done 5 and a half minute hallway thing here on youtube but this is the only real recreation of it i could find. =/
Not the best production value, BUT the attention to detail was great. I do think the acting failed... especially when he's talking about being lost... no sign of fear.
Overall, not bad... nice to see someone give the film some existance.
(Should have been one continuous shot! Read the book, kids!)
This was pretty bad, and it made me sad because I love the book so very very much. The acting was subpar, the cinematography was not faithful to the book, and it dragged on. At least this did the good deed of giving me incentive to film a better portrayal.
Just read the chapter in House of Leaves, just searched youtube to se if anyone else had tried to make this clip... glad that now I dont need to even consider it :)
You might as well picture the events of this story taking place in another world where the Navidson Record was a real film, and a man wrote about it, and another man edited it. It is not real, but Mr. Danielewsky did a fantastic job of making it seem so with ten years of hard work.
this is pretty much exactly how i pictured the first film, "five and a Half Minute Hallway," looking like, except in the book it says there are no effects and it is one continuous shot from one camera.
valient effort, just get some better actor and special effects, and your almost to the point of having a sub-par film version of the book. Sorry im gonna agree with cheekyMonkey on this one, its not something you could express through film.
Anyone know were i could see a copy of The Navidson Record. It says it actually exists but its impossible to find on the internet. It says its a short excerpt to...i just got the book and started readding and already wanna see this...or is it like the Blair witch project.
Actually the books says there are two versions of "The Five and a Half Minute Hallway."
The first one is a bootleg VHS copy and the second is a different one released with The Navidson Record. The second one has the continuous shot along with extra footage like what is shown in the begining of this film.
In all, I thought you did a good job on this one. It's really quite impossible to show the House without some major effects work.. but I thought that you did a good job in a lot of parts at capturing the essence. Personally I liked your choices of songs from Haunted, I think that the music actually helped to convey the message better (as it clearly was meant to when it was written). Some of the voices could have been acted a bit better, but in all I actually liked this clip.
This isn't very effective to me. No offense though, as you've set your self a Herculean task. It's near impossible to manufacture a visual representation of the house (put this in blue if you want) in Danielewski's novel. He (as Zampano)refers to this many times in the book. The presence and threat of 'nothing-ness' cannot be conveyed in a mediated form like recorded video or audio. you have to be there. This is, of course, inpossible. Nonetheless, great book, and a good try.
i mean, it's not bad. i really think it would be better without the music though. it would be creepier because it would seem more real. also, the fact that there's no sound except the groaning while inside the labyrinth is really important, so the music in those parts especially threw me.
the music is important too. Poe or Anne Danielewski wrote the album Haunted as a unofficial soundtrack to the book. the music is chopped up to enhance the drama of the film experience but overall it fits into the narrative.
for a student film done by one person primarily without help, this is an adaptation of only a portion of the book, literally the first two pages alone.
The book says the five and a half minute hallway was a SINGLE CONTINUOUS SHOT. Kudos for having a crack though, this book is brilliant, good to see others are inspired by it.
