the project was true it did happen but nothing like whats portraid ,,,what happened was they draped electrical cables around the ship and they used magnetic fields to reduce the ships profile in conductivity so when passing over mines they didnt set them off its called gauss ..so nothing fancy like the film says yes they were trying to make the ship invisible ,,but not literally just to mines by reducing the ships magnetic field caused by iron ships and electrical components inside

The experiment wasn't about making the ship invisible by sight. It was designed to see if there was a way to hide them from Radar which was a brand new invention then. It failed. No one was hurt. It was declassified in the 80's. Crew members were interviewed after the movie and no one was injured or teleported or dissapeared.
