This is sort of related to your post, but a good rule of thumb is that words with tones 1,2 or 3 do not begin with "ng" but with null initial (so love is correctly "oi3"). Words with tones 4,5 and 6 being with "ng" (so I is correctly "ngo5"). Of course the reality is a lot of cantonese people will think you sound weird if you talk like this.

唳字隨便一查，黃錫凌、周無忌、李卓敏、范國所出字典、93年商務新詞典、大多數香港人均讀成[淚], 只有何文匯一人指要讀麗，讀淚是錯讀。結果就是全世界錯獨何文匯對，教師照單全收，同學班還演起話劇來，真是滑稽。片段中的老師將構思讀成救思，如此重視「（何文匯）正讀」，老師讀貓字應該會讀成「苗」，否則便是「顛倒陰陽」了，各位有養「苗」嗎？弱不禁風不能讀「襟」，則是完全無視以變讀為正讀的現實，何氏未要我們將「唔禁用」讀成「唔今用」，已經仁至義盡。

Admit it, cantonese isn't an easy language to master. I won't blame myself for mispronouncing the words any more.

Personally i think its easier than mandarin. No 0 tone, no retroflex sounds, no erhua etc.
