I miss the old engines too. They had a very uinique whine. That I is one reason why I've always loved the C-5. Let's all get together and save one with the old engines when the fleet retires at Davis Monthan. We can restore it and fly it around the counttry and then charge people $400 for rides:)
is it only me, thats sick and tired of hearing those 80 HP bug smashers rolling around the area knowing they can take off. Of course coupled with that idiot announcer that cant read a teleprompter correctly, the video almost makes me go nutz.
that was awesome!! I am from Newburgh NY which is home of Stewart Air national Guard/Marine Corps Air Station. They have the C-5A's there. Those planes are awesome.
They are the big brother of the C6-50, and you are close on thrust, The C5M is around 53,000lbs thrust at about a 30% derate, and the KC-10's are around 51,500lbs thrust non derated.
One just flew over my house. I live near Moffet Field in California. I know it was the C-5M because it was noticeably quieter. The new engines are more powerful and efficient, but they sure don't sound as good as the old ones. I wish they had not quieted them down so much.
Very impressive. I went to the open house at DAFB about 40 years ago when the first C-5s arrived. The sound of those engines is distinctive, something you dont soon forget. I think I would miss the whine.
Beautiful bird. My dad worked on the C-5A model at Anderson AFB, Guam back in the 1970's. I was a KC-135R/T crewchief myself. The new engines on both aircraft are great modifications.
MUCH, MUCH, quieter than its sister older model. However, i kinda miss that "whine sound" to be quite honest, you just felt, heard, & KNEW it was coming....!!!
I'll miss the sound of the old engines, I grew up with those things flying low and slow over my house near USMCAS El Toro in the 1970s, and I loved it.
I like the vibrating sound the TF39 engines had during taking off. Sorta sounded like a V8 engine.

Its just not the same without that Galaxy sound. I love the whine sound you get from the older galaxy.

no "whine sound" but there was an awesome scream coming from the engines

Imagine if they chose RB211-535s from the 747 instead of CF6-80C2s.

Air show announcers are the freakin' worst....
WE GET IT, it's a C-5M! And FTR- The firetruck whine of the old engines can't be beat, 20% increase in thrust or not.

It sounds like the CF6 engines are the same as those used on the KC-10.
About the same thrust rating.
Logistically it make sense as they are frequently based at the same Bases.
Anyone in the know about this?
rampking1 1 year ago
@rampking1 Similar to the KC-10 engines. The C5M has the GE CF6-80C2. The KC10 has the CF6-50.

@PaganEgyptian Thanks.
I'm around airliners all day.....the newer engines found on the A330 and 777 are amazing in durability....light years ahead of ancient TF-39's
This should be factored in when discussing further work on the C-5M
