LOVE the description! It definitely gives them real character instead of the usual scientific explanations. Sparking public interest is very important to the preservation of species. Your approach is wonderful.
We have observed this meerkat group regularly for over six years. Many of the kats we have followed since they were pups. We can recognize most of them from a distance. It's a simple fact that these animals are intelligent enough to have their own personalities and behaviours.
I don't understand what is cruel about it: The meerkats live in an open enclosure, things fly over it, and they raise an alarm. Just as they do in the wild. It's normal meerkat behaviour. In fact it's better if captive animals have a stimulating environment that encourages them to observe and evaluate possible dangers.
